The video I did about the Disney physical media situation spurred some strange reactions, and I felt they needed a follow up. Also, there's more news on the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny CD soundtrack situation!

Robin Hood never said the peasant who paid the Sheriff's unfair taxes deserved what he got. Superman never said the bystander who was almost run over by a car deserved what he got. Captain America never said during World War II that occupied France deserved what it got. Batman never said his parents' choice to walk down that alley meant they deserved what they got. Luke Skywalker never said the people trying to survive under the Empire deserved what they got. Zorro never said the peons of California who were beaten and starved deserved what they got. None of these heroes ever worried about how much the victims agreed with them or their methods. Seems a lot of people in our community have forgotten the plot, if they ever knew it at all.

The reality is disney made a terrible show with she hulk and other shows and you bought it which is hilarious. Lol. You made 25 minute video on my comment which is hilarious. I respect your opinions and physical media is very important but I feel it is disappearing in this modern age. Lol iam laughing that you own some of the worst entrainment in the last decade and your trying to justify it to yourself lol

The majority of the examples you have offered up are serious situations thrust upon the living conditions and everyday lives of people by ill intended parties, not nonobligatory consumerism that transfers power (and that's what cash transfers are, the transfer of small amounts of power from 1 party to another) from themselves to companies and creative parties that actively work against and hate them in real life. Robin Hood : Forced taxation vs optional consumerism. Things not the same aren't the same. Also, Robin Hood undermined and robbed the parties that willfully supported The Sherriff (and his ambitions) in the same manner that he did The Sherriff. If people dunk on you for poor prioritization (must have Disney+ sub, must own fictional TV season x, etc), self undermining and/or a lack of self control, that complaint is more legitimate than the false equivalence you're presenting. Also, when you wave around the symbols of companies and creative people that say crappy things about real people as people, the people that they've been directing that to tend to respond negatively. Also, "scary" is an emotional word based on personal perspective, it isn't logic or universal to see people expressing what I outlined above as ' _scary_ ' . Get a grip. You're using charged language to support your bias, while talking about people being illogical. I just pushed over your entire video within one 3 minute response, maybe I should make my own YT channel

In an age where these streaming services can delete shows/movies forever, or can limit access to said media, piracy is a must in the name of media preservation. Even "bad" media deserves preservation, as examples of what doesn't work or how to work around limitations.

Nowadays it seems nearly impossible to have a discussion without someone becoming a bad actor or simply not understanding the points being made. I blame it on debate being a lost skill, "entertainment" debate shows simply being screaming matches between two people who actually don't believe what they are saying, and the ADHD nature of everything. Luckily there are still enough people who get what you are saying, Michael and appreciate your viewpoint. Thanks again for the video.

Disney never liked their movies on physical media. They had to be dragged into producing VHS tapes kicking and screaming all the way. Then there was the "the vault" Remember the Fox vault, or the WB vault, or the MGM vault? Me neither, because Disney was the only company that really did that. Disney had to be dragged into DVD, Blu-ray, 3-D Blu-ray, and 4K. Disney has never been comfortable with letting the consumers own their movies. This is just the latest version of that. Digital media also allows Disney to market their movies and TV shows without having to produce physical copies, but still charge top dollar for them.

Just a few personal reflections, in no particular order: 1. Ironically, buying a bootleg does nothing to support the movie or show that's being bootlegged. In a way, it provides a sort of anti-support. So why anyone would be upset with you "supporting" media they find to be lacking is nonsensical in ways that go even beyond the points you've mentioned. 2. I agree 100% that the suppression of physical media hurts us all, no matter the media. For example, one big gripe I have is that the Star Wars OT theatrical cuts have not seen modern commercial release (beyond the laser disc transfers from 2005 that were "special features"). Many nuStar Wars fans couldn't relate to my frustrations. Well, ever since Disney pulled away from physical media and they can't get official releases of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and such, they can/should be able to empathize. I could gloat that they now share my pain, or I could do the wise thing and remind them that we're all suffering now and maybe it's time to join forces so we all get what we want. Pragmatism: Something fanboys sorely lack. 3. IMO, the entire Hollywood structure from the top down is problematic and it should all be razed to the ground. Good movies still exist, but they're usually indie films somehow made outside of the Hollywood assembly line or made by auteurs who somehow navigated the system and can use it to their advantage (Robert Eggers and Ari Aster being examples).

I grew up under the paradigm of you do your research (word of mouth way back before the internet) on who made a reliable sturdy product that would last and learn how to go about maintaining it. The paradigm back then was buy it once & keep it running for decades. I had heard about planned obsolescence in the 90s but always thought "why would a company want to put out inferior products that don't last?". Well...when smart phones came out in the late oughts, I noticed people paying top dollar for them then moving on to new model just a couple of years later. I was shocked to see how people's want to keep up with the Joneses was being leveraged against them. Next thing I knew, everything is designed to fail on purpose. It's our fault (and our parents before us) for not putting our foot down when this garbage started. As for Apple, years ago I bought my wife an iPod Touch. Let's just say I was severely disappointed when they by designed stopped updating the OS and indirectly blocking the device from updating apps I had already purchased. Here was a viable device still running smoothly two years after release that Apple had deemed obsolete just for being two years old. Well, that informed my purchasing decisions going forward. Apple would never again be on my list to consider buying.

Physical media forever! As someone who spent both videos scrutinizing the shelves behind you, I never even considered judging the content. I just wanted a higher resolution so I could read more of the titles. I own more DVDs than anyone I have ever met. Lord knows, there's plenty of terrible movies in my collection. Judging me, or anyone, based on their collection is ridiculous. From the earliest Netflix days I always said streaming is not forever. I want to own my media. I even want to own the bad ones. While I've enjoyed most of the Disney+ content you showed, I admit they are not all spectacular. I still want to own ALL of them. If I'm honest, the only reason I haven't hunted down the same bootlegs you did is the probably overly optimistic hope that Disney would eventually release them to wring a few more dollars out of them.

It makes me think back to how some series are lost to time, take Doctor Who for example and how many of the episodes from the early seasons with the first and second Doctor are gone permanently. It's still somethings thats happening to this day, shows/movies are still getting lost. I think it's good there are people who are doing what they can to preserve the media. Take the Willow show for example, I wasn't a huge fan of it due to how it felt out of place for me but I don't think it's the right approach for Disney to pull it or any other show or movie for that matter. I am not a fan of what Disney or what other companies are doing to most franchises these days but I am certainly not going to attack anyone for enjoying them. As always keep up the great work, looking forward to what comes next!

One thought about this: A common criticism directed towards many youtubers who review shows, books, toys, etc, "If you don't like it - why do you watch it!?!?!" My response would be, "If I don't watch it - how will I know if it's good or not?" It's like when your parents raised you, "If you don't try it - how do you know you won't like it?" You can't surrender to the reviewers on youtube, the legacy critics in the press or the pressure of the public at large, the "fans", and *not* see a film, tv show or not read a book/comic book just because they say it's bad. You're always going to want to see it yourself. Once you've purchased it-it's yours for better or worse but paying for it and owning it doesn't necessarily indicate endorsement of the show. The people screaming the loudest seem to forget when these shows/movies came out they were first in line to see them too and find out for themselves. I heard many youtubers complaints about Indy 5 but I still had to see it for myself.

People seem to forget when VHS and BETA were first coming out, Hollywood was absolutely against it. They did not want people having physical ownership. In the beginning you could ONLY rent movies. When VHS first started picking up in the ownership market they were sold at a premium. EVENTULLY the bigwigs in Hollywood acquiesced because there was just so much money to be made from VHS sales. As DVD exploded, they also reaped the rewards from that. *ALL THAT CHANGED* was the way the big wigs decided to do business. They have been, for the better part of the last 15 years, been trying to push their customer base onto streaming platforms, because they want the control back. They don't want us to have physical media. They betrayed their partners in the brick and mortar world by cutting all of this product out. Because they could make more money, they thought, by simply streaming things. The reality is, the grim reality, is they are doing this on purpose across the board.

Thank you for this video. It's so confusing, I collect movie scores on CD. The "record companies" don't want my money. I collect physical media. Entertainment companies that used to support DVD and Bluray don't want my money. I understand that I don't represent a majority, but there is a way of doing limited editions that are well promoted and unit-appropriate to satisfy a decent amount of people who want them. I have no desire to bow before the CEOs that love to make such illogical choices that ultimately amount to "We don't want your money." "Why is our revenue down this quarter? How could that happen?"

People’s hatred of just a few shows really just ruins them from watching (and understanding) a reasoned opinion. It’s so much easier to focus on that than the real issue. This is why there are ‘fans’ and there are ‘fanatics’. When an AI becomes a director/producer, etc, THEN the execs will start crying and running to the table. I LOVE early Godzilla movies, but others just see two people in suits bashing each other.

Seems odd there are that many people who may've misunderstood the last video, but I certainly think you articulated your points clearly and politely enough to get them across - both here and for so many more of your videos. Really hope more of these high-level executives across the board have their "come to Jesus" moment to stop their dipstick tendencies, or to step down so someone within their depth can right those wrongs (though I imagine many would just need to get the boot to get the point) so we can better preserve our media, our history, our respect & understanding of each other, and our sanity. Keep Up The Good Work! (: EDIT: Having digital access & storage of things definitely has its benefits, but physical media should ALWAYS be an option & have a seat at the table as much as it has a market as well, as it's never a good idea to deprive people of options on purpose (yet execs wonder why legitimate emulation for games is so sought-out & why piracy is so popular in general - if you serve a good product for a _good_ price, they *_will_* come...)

In the days of public forums and (not so) social media, people forget that a conversation is not a confrontation and that you can totally have a different opinion without having to attack other people. Debate the idea, the subject, not the person. No matter how good or bad these writers are, in the end, they have to follow what the executives decide. The consumers can only vote with their wallet. Enough flops might finally send the message that we're tired of the current nonsense and that it's time for a change, time to go back to good storytelling and maybe take a crew outside instead of green screening a simple walk in a park... They don't want to sell physical media anymore, they want us to pay forever through memberships.

I'm not sure where the urge to be as negative as possible comes from. It's concept inflation. It seems that for so many people out there, saying something isn't your cup of tea just doesn't cut it anymore. They have to say something is the worst possible version of something or is complete trash. They have to drag something and anyone who enjoys it through the mud until they've emptied their black little hearts out of every drop of vitriol. Such opinions lack perspective, and the people who hold and express them seem broken inside. There's never any call for yucking anyone else's yum. The moment I begin to hear someone trashtalk something I or someone else enjoys, I shut them down right away or find someone else to talk to.

I argued with you on Twitter about the "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" soundtrack not being widely available on compact disc. I've thought more about it and I've changed my mind. You were right. I was wrong. I allowed my own personal opinion on music to cloud my thinking. I was a huge compact disc owner back in the day. I got tired of lugging around all my CDs every time I moved (I was in the Air Force) and constantly breaking the jewel cases. When digital music became a thing, I was an early adaptor. I no longer found any value in owning physical music media. I do not feel the same way about video content. I definitely see the value in owning physical copies of movies and TV shows. I watch a lot of content on streaming services, but I can never count on something always being available. Just because something was on Netflix three months ago doesn't mean it's on Netflix now. The way content jumps from paid streaming service to paid streaming service is beyond annoying. I've learned that if I really enjoy a movie or TV show, I need to own the Blu-ray. I realized you were right and I was wrong when I applied my own position on video media to music media. My logic didn't hold up.

Yet, Penguin / Random House charges almost the exact same price for a DL (sorry, I'm not forking out that $$ unless I have a Physical Object in my hand). I am also a huge Anime Nerd (since 1985), and we have noticed this trend in the Anime Industry (a much more niche crowd) as well, and it is worrisome to many of us older fans (the younger fanbase, not so much). I’ve gotten a lot of indie cassette releases, most are new chip tune, punk, or 80s synth musicians. There is a wonderful collectors market for it, that many released various forms of their music for. They still release digital, but the extra perks of the physical media for many is of course the artwork, design, etc.

Full transparency, I think a great many of the MCU shows like She-Hulk are objectively terrible, BUT I got your point and support anybody who wants a physical library of the shows they like, especially if, like me, you're a completionist and wants that show on your shelf. The shows SHOULD be available whether everyone like the show or not. As a fan of Japanese media it's a treasure hunt and a pain in the ass a lot of the time to get my hands on media of the things I love and want to see AT ALL, so by all means you should have that access if you want these shows on disc. Indiana Jones 5 is objectively terrible, and it should be available to those who want it. Anyone who grew up fair minded understands these basic ass concepts. Disney has just been too delusional to get that their quality has been terrible, they reject media restrictions when they're true collectors, and that people will get around them. Don't let these guys get under your skin, man, you know they're the minority.

I also wanted to say that you’re right on the money when it comes to CEOs claiming “nobody wants X anymore” as an excuse not to make something, then making it so what they want you to buy is the only option. In the game industry it was a famous refrain from many EA execs to say “nobody wants singleplayer games anymore” as an excuse to not make them, or to force half-assed multiplayer modes into a game that otherwise would never get made by them because it’s singleplayer. They mzke more money off multiplayer games so all they want to make is multiplayer games.

E.T. is my favourite John Williams score (if I had to choose...) I can't believe any band would release a cassette of an album now! I can sort of see vinyl - it's back to the roots, and with a decent system it really does sound good (to me). But did cassettes _ever_ sound good?! All I remember from the good old days, is that they sold well because of Ghetto Blasters and Walkmans, as they were the only format you could transport. They also got chewed up all the time, slowed down when batteries were running out, sounded worse and worse the more you played them, and you could hear the other side of the tape on quiet bits. Actually my own description reminds me how much character they had, and I'm being charmed by their downsides... just remember kids: 'Home taping is killing music - and it's illegal.' I personally like the pops and hisses on early Retroblasting videos...

I'd say the opposite is true: you dislike some stuff I like. That doesn't mean *either* of us "deserve" any of this crap that's going on :/ The more time I spend on the internet (and I spend a *lot* of time on the internet), the more I find that Gabriel's Greater Internet Theory is true. Fandoms seem to evolve into toxicity and stupidity more often than not lately.

10:40 I so feel you there. Having a diverse library is what films are all about, it's all connected from the base of dreck to the highest heights. It should never reflect on your personal interests. Anything else would be a puerile echo-chamber which does no good for anyone.

speaking of soundtracks, I saw the original Tron as a 10 yr old and loved it, and in 2010 I saw Legacy , at first I thought it was ok, but yeas later I fell in love with it, and that soundtrack is beautiful as well as the movie in my opinion, but I found I couldn't find the soundtrack on CD in stores, but I found the LP, I also grew up with those but I'll find that CD someday. I have no problems with other people liking things whether I do or not..we all have opinions and always will, but to attack someone for owning something making allegations against them is ludicrous, I will never ever be able to understand that mindset. what the hell is going on with some people? by the way great video and well said..keep on keepin on.

As always Retroblasting, you hit the nail on the head once again. This whole thing reminds me of your video called "To Be Fair" a few years ago. It seems like this problem has gotten worse since then. Nowadays people do not know how to respectfully disagree with others on their opinions towards entertainment. I am not a fan of the current Disney+ shows or movies they come out with. In fact, I think Disney is in a Dark Age even worse than the one from the 70s & 80s. That being said, I don't have a problem with some people liking this stuff because it is OK to have different opinions. I know some KZbinrs who say things such as: "If you enjoy this movie then I don't want to associate with you. Get out of my face!" Imagine getting upset with someone who likes a film you don't like. As for the physical media portion of the video, I completely agree. It isn't because nobody is buying physical media, but because Hollywood doesn't put in the effort like they used to. Heck, my older brother just recently bought 007 Goldeneye on LaserDisc, VHS & DVD as part of his collection. Hollywood has just been so lazy to the point that they don't care anymore about making good content for people to watch. With the rumors of AI becoming a possibility, it shows how much they need to change from the very top.

Well said Michael, as usual! It's about choice and control. Everyone is entitled to like what they like. If I like a badly made black and white sci fi movie from the 1950s, that's my business. Physical media is a locked version of a production, that can't be corporately altered for any reason, after the fact. It cannot be disappeared for undisclosed reason. I like that!

Love the t-shirt! As for the media part, it's the same with books vs e-books, the arguements that you are facing over the CDs/DVD, etc...ar the same ones thrown out when anyone want physical media these days. Lables get used, folks laugh, mock you and then wonder why they can't use their digital version when Amazon or KZbin or Disney shuts off their accoutns. Yes I can still read or use my physical media without that worry.

It amazes me that some folks dont seem to realize bad films/games/shows can have terrific soundtracks. You can find kernels of good in piles of bad, just as you can find stuff in really good things that kinda suck. Also yeah, it’s the CEOs that are fucking over *everybody*. In gaming the same shit’s going down; guys like bobby kotick and andrew wilson have given themselves absurd bonuses whilst laying off literal hundreds of workers. Same shit’s happening in hollywood.

the only reason someone should be asking why you got something is cause they are interested in getting it too, and want to know about said item , if it wasn't for the fact that finding a multi disc player stereo is practically impossible i'd still be using my cds and collecting them , so its not that they just stopped making cds they also stopped making new stereos, so if your old stereo breaks you have no choice but to go digital which is what happened to me .

Something that crossed my mind was that the movie industry has used home video as an excuse to restore old movies to re-release them for profit. If they stop making physical media, it might lead to them not preserving films. They wouldn't restore/preserve a film just to put it out on streaming because there's no money in it. (Not that I can think of a movie they haven't restored yet) but it could effect things like that in the future. Every time a new format comes out ( ie dvd, blu-ray, 4K ) they do upgrades to their films. I know that new films are shot digitally, so they already have them in the bag, but older films might not all be in extreme high grade digital shape.I don't know, maybe food for thought.

Ya know, I was actually looking at parting with my DVD collection since the majority of it is so ready available now digitally, but after hearing how passionate you are about physical tangible media, I can’t do itZ I can’t part with it. I have a pretty extensive collection of DVD’s as well as music and there is just some hing about it. The art work on the cover to holding the discs. Yeah I holding onto mine! Lol! And for these nut jobs and how they attack the you for the wrong content and facts your stating just baffles me. They really have no brains. Lol!

What struck me about your media collection first was the James Bond Blue-Rays, then the Robin Hood (some that I recognise, some that I don't). Every time I watch one of your videos I think, "This is a guy I could really enjoy chatting to over a coffee or beer (or whatever you like) in real life," which is why I subscribe to RetroBlasting. Owning media for a show or film that I don't like, is not a reason to hate on someone. Apart from the reasons you gave, it could have been a well-intended but misguided gift, or a poor impulse purchase. So what? If that makes me a fanboy or a shill, or whatever pejorative term people want to use, I'll wear that label proudly in support of what you do. As for the whole Disney/Hollywood situation, it feels like the executives are detached from reality. I suspect that most entertainment executives would like to live in a world where the consumer had to pay every time they watched a show or listened to a piece of music. They want the money, but without the inconvenient cost of having to pay to produce new content. In Disney's case, they have 100 years of beloved (if not necessarily good, let's be honest) films. I suspect the executives just want to sit back and ride that cash cow, through monthly subscriptions. If writers are turning out poor quality screenplays, I suspect it is because the executives are forcing them to stick to known formulae, because they don't want to take the risk of doing anything else. I appreciate that money is important, we all need to get paid and to pay for stuff (and not just the essentials). The problem is that there's an expectation not just of making profit (which is reasonable) but that profit must always increase and that $10 million this quarter is more desirable than no profit this quarter but a $50 million profit over the whole year.

I've experienced what you said about people judging the movies you own. I once posted a short vid showcasing some cool figures I have in a Facebook toy group (and yes, I'm aware of your opinion of them, and you're not wrong), and they happened to be standing on one of my dvd shelves in front of the DVDs. Most people were very polite and left admiring comments. However one chuckle-fuck leaves the comment, "Get better taste in movies." So when I call him out on it, he gets all defensive and plays the victim. Jerkwad.

I think only the anti hero Michelle Pfeiffer's Cat Woman blamed victims. When she rescues a mugging victim dragged into an alley the grateful woman tries to thank her. But Pfeiffer slams her against a wall and says, "You make it so EASY for them don't you!" Meaning both assailants and the rescuers. She kinda had a point, but I'm not a woman and line may not have been meant for me.
