the whole "iago and zazu try to make the tiki room profitable" angle, and ESPECIALLY clyde and claude becoming slimy talent agents, point to my biggest issue with a lot of the michael eisner-era park stuff: a weird self-obsession with skeezy hollywood shit as a source of "humor". this and superstar limo (and really california adventure as a whole) are two of the most obvious examples. like they thought everybody would find it as entertaining as they did, but it's... just not.
@JustMe-cn5bp Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I absolutely feel this. I think Eisner had the mindset of "I think this is funny, so everyone will find it funny". Not realising that some of the jokes would be less funny to people who didn't work in the entertainment industry. I know a lot of people have said that in his early years at Disney, Eisner would have a lot of his bad ideas reigned in by Frank Wells. I think Eisner has his strengths, but he also needs someone more level headed to keep his ideas in check

yeah, I think Eisner had a real over-obsession with Hollywood branded stuff in general (Superstar Limo, this, MGM, WDS, etc), and there was this expectation that so did everyone else. Paul Pressler, the 90’s park czar under Eisner, HATED the parks….Seriously. We got expansions like Disney Institute because he was convinced adults were “bored” and “embarrassed” to be there, and just wanted to drop the kids off while they went to shop and golf. As such, if a classic Walt-era attraction wasn’t pulling numbers , he always blamed the attraction for being too “old”, and wanted to either bulldoze it for a store, or update it with a current 90’s-00’s IP. When we heard Iago screech “You boids have been doing the SAME SHOW for THOITY YEARS!”, we knew that wasn’t Iago we were hearing…

I’m 57 and was taken to Disney World in its opening summer in 1971. I have fond memories of “The Tiki room”. I remember escaping the brutal Orlando summer heat in the attraction. Under New Management was an attempt by Disney to get modernization points from one of its original older exhibitions. My opinion was that it was their way of stretching the budget and buying a few more years on the exhibit. I believe it worked initially but the parks attendees grew tired of Gilbert Godfrey’s voice over rather quickly. The older version may have been antiquated but there was a relaxing charm about it that still resonated with all age groups.

I love this old show. Wish they'd bring back the full one through, with the fountain included. I get why they haven't. But I wish they would. I've got a service dog now and I'm pretty broken down, but the Enchanted Tiki Room is still one of my favorite things at WDW. Always gets me to stop in at least once. I think if they had chosen a less beloved attraction, or even been less disrespectful of the original version, it wouldn’t have flopped nearly as badly. Maybe they could have ended with Iago acknowledging that the show was ultimately fine the way it was, with a moral of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

It was obvious to an engineering mind like mine -that went to the room to set his mechanical mind aside for a bit of fantasy- that valves were sticking, timing was seriously off and some actions were missing due to damage and the need for refurbishment. If as you said the whole thing was shipped to Florida as part of the parks grand opening, then they must have had to fix everything... I remember being on jungle cruise back in 1997-ish, before the original Tropical Serenade went down…our skipper kept saying things like “Yep we’re finally teaching those birds some new songs!”, genuinely happy that the old show was being retired. Betcha he was singing a different song himself when he saw what they did to it.

I met Michael Eisner quickly as he was walking though the Grand Floridian. He caught my attention bc he had more makeup on than I did.

I never visited the Florida park, because I hardly ever had the money. I however visited the one in Anaheim and spent as much time in the tiki room as possible. there's a drink counter outside, it sells sandwiches and a verity of fruit drinks. I spent my share of time, using the park transit system and I even took notice of how much the park, as far as Disneyland had changed. space mountain is still around, it's just more of a building now, then a mountain. also, the space adventure ride, has improved.

Thanks for the look back. When I visited DisneyWorld in the mid-1970s, the Tiki Room was on my must-see list because I thought it was an aviary with live tropical birds. Boy was I disappointed to see those little robotic dummies singing, although I laughed my mistake off.

17:45 Sounds like what Disney is doing with all their remakes these days. Especially Snow White. Mocking or outright contempt for the groundbreaking, classic beloved Disney content that came before them

As someone who was a long time visitor to WDW sense it opened, the Tiki Room was one of the spots that I would go every time I went .It is a good show and a great place to cool off in the Central Florida heat .Thankfully I was never exposed to “under new management”because I would have definitely filled a complaint! It would be like changing It’s a Small World After All and adding Rap & HIp hop instead.⁉️

I just really love the irony of the tiki god burning iago for real! And that gets them to stop working at the tiki room! Like that's just so perfect, I would have totally played that up in the marketing for removing the new management design. Iago's just like " ALRIGHT ALRIGHT I'M GOING-- "

Without Michael Eisner, Disney would have fallen by the wayside years ago. You credit him with the "Disney Decade", without numbering off the incredible successes that went along with it. Yes, you list the cruise lines, the park expansions and a couple of other things. But how about: Little Mermaid Beauty and the Beast Lion King Aladdin Mulan Hercules Tarzan Lilo and Stitch Pocahontas Toy Story Among many successful live action films, Broadway shows, their partnership with Pixar, construction of multiple resorts, etc, etc, etc Michael Eisner SAVED Disney and made it what it is today Bob Iger is DESTROYING Disney, today. Get your head in straight.

The first time i went to disney world age 10 we saw UNM and it was a truly baffling fever dream - especially when youre a child with no concept of the original attraction, the comedy just made absolutely no sense. I saw the original tiki room for the first time this year (now age 27) and was blown away by how much of a subtle, calm and visually and musically gorgeous attraction it is, I am so relieved they revived the original. My hopes aren't high for country bear's upcoming "modernisation"...

I remember being 5 years old and my mom taking me to see tiki room under new management. And we had to leave the theater because when the thunder and lightning effect went off, I started crying and screaming because it hurt my ears. I turned out to be autistic years later. But I do remember it as a Gen Z with a little bit of nostalgia. But not fondness. I did also go to trader Sams as an adult on my last trip and got to see that familiar face. 😊

As a kid, I loved the Enchanted Tikki Room. I had to go every time we went to Disney. When New Management came around, I was curious and so we tried it out. I absolutely hated it. It’s like the gutted the life out of the original attraction and spat on its corpse. I definitely felt its loss. In the coming years, even if we needed to kill some time before going to our next stop, we never returned to New Management.

Okay but like even if the fire never happened, the title "Under new Management" would be outdated, it has the same energy as the word new in New Super Mario Bros Series even though there were like 4 games

As a 4 year old seeing your two favorite Disney movie birds argue and sing was hilarious. My siblings and I loved that show and watched it every year we went back. We went back recently and saw the updated version and was definitely shocked. Didn’t hate it. But my childhood heart was broken.

So glad I didn’t get to see it. I love the version now. It has an old world charm and it was one of Walt’s projects. You feel like you are visiting Disney history. Some things don’t need bells and whistles. We love them just they way they are❤

ok, I was born in '73 and my grandmother took me and my cousin to Disney World every summer from the time we were toddlers. I do not remember it ever being called the Tiki Birds Tropical Serenade *or* the Sunshine Pavilion. It was just "The Tiki Room". I'm wishing now that I still had one of the old park maps showing it so I could check that out...

I hate to say this but thank God that fire happened! I went to Disney world for the first time in 2013 and I absolutely loved the new tiki room brought back as Walt Disney’s enchanted tiki room!!! This is one of my favorite shows to see in the park! Walt would be so proud and happy!!!

These people have no idea of what Disneyland is about. They continually try to shoehorn their own personal and vile ideas into what Walt created. They are all hell-bent on destroying what the customers love and desecrating Walt’s legacy.
