"Time we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far far away". Well, sure other than: Marcia Lucas Leigh Brackett (screenwriter ESB) Katie Lucas (writer/director of many Clone Wars episodes) Bryce Dallas Howard Deborah Chow Carrie Fisher (as script doctor) Patty Jenkins... Oh wait nevermind And sure Kathleen Kennedy I guess too. But other than those, plus the hundreds (thousands?) of other women involved in the production of the franchise, fiiiinally, we have one. I'd love to hear her say in an interview that she grew up on Star Wars, and regularly watched the movies and tv shows, and always dreamed of being involved. Then I'd be willing to see what she can do. But as someone who has no experience with making blockbuster movies, she'll have no idea what is really involved. Like most of us. At that point, gender really doesn't matter much.

Their boards members are getting replaced and so the activist investor will get more power to dictate the direction of the company. The identity thing is a smokescreen. Don’t fall for it. Disney/Marvel is doing the same thing they’ve done for the last decade or so - 1. Find an auteur director with a few artistic successes. 2. Use their name for clout. 3. Behind the scenes, exploit their relative inexperience to bully or flatter them into submission to the corporate mission. 4. Churn out the same pre-made, generic, bland, corporate product that can be loosely called a “film”. 5. Rinse, repeat.

I watched (painfully) the full uncut 43 minute panel where she made the quote "I enjoy making men uncomfortable". She was NOT referring directly to the men in the film, and it was not really taken out of context. It was referring to any men watching her films and seeing things about themselves that they may not have otherwise seen, and getting uncomfortable about it. There seems to be an almost reverse gaslighting about that quote, where she's given a pass because it's "out of context". It's not.

Heck, her movie of Rogue Squadron might have been interesting, especially with it dealing from a pilot's point of view. Nope, canceled. What we see happening in fandom today is actually part of a very ancient cycle. In most ancient cultures, they would set aside one part of the realm for one political group, and one realm for the opposite group. Then, they would have a third realm, set aside for nature, and this was considered the “realm for all”, to prevent tribal warfare from destroying the land. “Fandom” used to be this “realm for all”, where people from varying political isles could get together and agree to respect each other. That time has passed. The “realm for all” is no more: it has been bulldozed and mutilated by those who wish to claim it for their own political side. The result, of course, is that the land is doomed to be destroyed in a mindless, never ending tribal war.

After writing LOTR, Tolkien briefly considered writing a sequel series where another dark threat rose, and then decided not to go through with it. George Lucas should have done the same thing, ending the Star Wars story where justice and the Jedi had been restored. These weren't stories that needed continuations. These weren't like historical, real life epics taking place in messy worlds where happy endings don't happen. There's nothing wrong with liking that sort of thing, but LOTR and Star Wars exist in the realm of myth and theme. They exist to show watchers that evil is real, and that it can be defeated with friendship and determination. Unfortunately, we live in a world where stories are owned by big corporations who want to cash in on them, and/or use them as vehicles to promote their twisted political ideologies. The story of Star Wars is ultimately the story of how a culture went from venerating its heroes and passing on positive values, to a culture that elevated Victimhood and envy to supreme moral goods.
@unclerukmer8 ай бұрын
Years ago, probably around the time of The Force Awakens, Rich Evans made a comment that remains extremely relevant and few people seem to appreciate: "Star Wars is played out and there's nothing more to do with it." Yes, everything Star Wars in the Disney era is just pastiche and recycled garbage because LucasFilm is filled with talentless identify junky hacks who hire the same to make trash. But beneath that is the fact that the themes were explored and the were stories told in the Original Trilogy. Even a talented writer would struggle to come up with where to take the franchise creatively and thematically. Which is why you need a lot of extremely talented writers to try and crack that nut. But that would require hiring at least a few white men and you can't have that.

I recently explained the problems with this response to Obaid-Chinoy on a Robot Head video, which made the same arguments that try to have it both ways - praising her pro-woman activism, but that she shouldn't use Star Wars as a platform to do it. That isn't how activism works and leftism didn't progress into "woke"-ism by restraining itself. Obaid-Chinoy herself explained how this works, but these centrist commentators don't want to listen to her. The fact that multiple people can independently make the same case shows that there is a general mindset about the anti-"woke" centrist movement. This mindset should be heavily criticized until it's discredited. But it's safe for KZbin and channels that promote it will always be bigger than channels advocating for proper anti-"woke" positions.
