What really happened to the birds and reptiles in Zootopia? Why aren't they ever in the movie? Today, I have a theory that could answer this question.

Fish are canonically eaten by predators in Zootopia. The movie showed a fish themed restaurant during the train sequence, and the new Hot Pursuit ride in Shanghai Disneyland contains a packaging company called White Paw Fish Packing Co. There was even a scrapped spearfishing character with diving equipment and everything. Heck, the ride even shows off several dead fish in large nets, and some of them are hanging from fishing hooks. There's also a neon sign near the entrance of the factory depicting a fish jumping into a polar bear's mouth.

If they did exist, they would have been shown already, or we would have at least been given some kind of hint towards their existence by now. The whole idea of Zootopia is that it takes place in the same world as ours, the only difference being that humans never existed. In other media, like Sonic or Duck Tales, there are also humans or human like creatures that roam around among the main cast, so it would be strange to suddenly have a lack of pets or un-evolved animals in those universes. Besides, it would be a little odd for some animals in Zootopia, who co-exist in the same environments together, to remain un-evolved while other members of their species did evolve. What would be the reason for them to be left out like that, other than to serve as food for their further evolved counterparts?

I think the egg laying could be the main issue as to Reptiles and Birds not having proper facilities and care within Zootopia. Some parts could be too cold, too hot, too rainy etc.

I think birds and reptiles have their own countries and languages in the zootopia universe. Which is another reason that could explain their absence is because there’s a literal language barrier. And given how “racist” mammals are to other mammals in zootopia I would imagine that racism would be pretty strong against other animal groups which would mean mammals wouldn’t be too keen on letting birds or reptiles in. especially if they literally don’t speak the same language. Of course that could change with a second movie with mammals becoming more excepting of outsiders and letting go of their biased idealism.

I would be so hyped to see anthro birds and reptiles in the next film, that would add such a cool new layer to the Zootopia universe! I don't think we'll be seeing fish tho, cuz if you look closely at one of the shots in the movie showing Tundratown you can see a Fishtown Market and even a resturant caller Blubber Chef! The implications of those titles very much indicate that preds eat fish and likely whales but I could be wrong about the last one. I hope they delve deeper into that!

Another theory: birds once played a world leading role in Zootopia universe, but one particular bird once proposed a theory that says that reptiles are underspecies, due to their lack brain matter. There's a difference between evolving, and evolving sapient intelligence. I suspect that in Zootopia, the mammals evolved into the sapient intelligence bracket, while bugs, some marine life, reptile, amphibians, etc did not. The carnivore mammals need a food source too after all.

I think you had something going describing the fear the mammals have about reptiles and I would extend that to birds. Humans are afraid of most reptiles because of evolutionary trauma. Our more humanoid ancestors not only had to share the world with venomous reptiles like we do today but also massive ones to boot, creature like Megalania, Giant Snakes and Crocodiles. Going further back, when mammals first evolved they were not the dominant life form on the planet, that of course was the Dinosaurs. Mammals at that time were barely able to grow into species the size of Rabbits and Rats and would most likely be a food source for many smaller Dinosaurs. Assuming evolutionary history is largely the same in Zootopia, many of the Mammal's ancestors would have to deal with the same issue, massive reptilian beasts roaming the land hunting them for food or even accidentally squishing them under foot. Even though Dinosaurs are technically reptiles, we know that many predatory Dinosaurs share an ancestor with Birds. This multi-generational fear that the Mammals have in Zooptopia of Reptiles and Bird could be a direct result of their ancestors living under the tyrannical rule of the Dinosaurs. If the Dinosaurs in Zooptopia are the dominant life form in their history it could stand to reason that they were as intelligent as the Mammals which means the Mammals could've been subjugated in other ways other than being bottom of the food chain in a Dinosaur dominant planet. It may be for this reason Reptiles and Birds aren't allowed within the city due to their relation with Dinosaurs. To boil everything down, I account the lack of Reptiles and Birds in Zootopia to multi-generational fear and hate of the Dinosaurs and thus of the Birds and Reptiles.

Another possible issue: not only are reptiles usually predators, but many of them are venomous. There are some venomous mammals like male platypuses, but not nearly as many as reptiles. So, having a large chunk of your population in addition to being predators would make mammals even more distrustful of reptiles. Hell, even if reptiles are not smart enough to out-wit mammals, other mammal politicians and crime lords can utilize venomous reptiles as assassins, which can really de-stabilize society. Birds are a trickier question because, for all practical purposes, they have more in common with mammals in that they are very intelligent, social, and warm-blooded. Also, I’d imagine reptile characters would be harder to market in a Disney film than the furry and lovable mammals. In contrast, birds tend to be colorful and very charming and we don’t fear them like we do reptiles. So, not adding birds is a bit of a miss.

Firstly, birds are reptiles. They are dinosaurs, which are reptiles. Secondly, yes corvids especially can match chimpanzees in intellectual capacity, sometimes surpassing them, let alone leaving many other mammals in the dust. I can see a zootopia sequel highlighting the undersea world, showcasing orcas, octopuses and other intelligent creatures form the majority of the population. That would be cool, as developing intelligence wouldn’t necessarily mean evolving into terrestrial, upright creatures.

Official creative reasoning to why there are only mammals is that in reptile and bird world the predator-prey relationship isn't as defined. An eagle can be the predator of a mongoose, but can be prey to a snake, snake is prey to a mongoose, it creates confusion and ruins the narrative of the story. I like zootopia world more like this, give the option to keep carnivores with an unique culinary world of bird, reptile and bug based dishes which is scientifically accurate and intersting lore-wise.

I think that another big question would be just what so the predators eat? While it is true that most animals are not 100% herbivorous or carnivorous they still require more of their basic food type. So what exactly are the lions and hyenas and polar bears eating.

As far as the theories go: I doubt it, alot. The reason given, is also the reason it makes no sense. In a movie centered around predator vs prey, their inclusion would make more sense. If anything the creators likely just focused on alot of well known animals that people would know. It would not surprise me if they simply were not needed for the movie but otherwise are part of zootopia. But if one REALLY wants to go down why certain groups of animals are not in the movie, than start with the mammalion groups, cause there are several distinctly missing groups. Primates: Your gorillas, lemurs, monkeys, etc Bats: A group of animals which make up around 20% of all mammal species but yet not a single one in the movie. Cats and dogs: also completely absent despite their being felines and canines (though one can go with the no humans no cats and dogs to exist path).

mamillian animals are only depicted maybe more primal like food for the remaining animals. its a common misconception that carnivores and herbivores only eat meat and veggies respectively if their lacking in nutrients they will simply eat what ever they have at hand with said nutrients while they preffer their own foodgroups they are not restricted to said food group. in the past their might have been a food war where the various animals fought to decide what would be declared food and what wouldnt, carnivore mammals realizing they were outnumbered might have teamed with herbivore mammals and moved towards a climate closer towards northern us/southern canada type where lots of food could be farmed and named it mammilia and declared other types of animals as food by lowering their sentience. lizards, birds and fish could have their own nations with similar mindsets and those who got close to the borders could be designated "prey" hence why fish are seen, the fish city could be too deep in the ocean for alot of fish to get too thus allowing fishing or swimming mammals able to hunt them for food.

Just gonna say my theory here but...what else would the carnivorse eat. I think they eat what we don't see. And that could be anything that's not a mammle. Unlike shows like beastars were its established what the carnivors eat.in zootopia they never actually established it. We do see ice pops, and donuts. Other then that I don't remember seeing any other food

I think the birds city could have a lot of perch place and the reptilian city would have climbing access and a certain climate.

For example most birds stay up high in trees and reptiles need a different living environment then the animals in zoo topia
