In this week's fantasy Disney World planning, we are doing Disney with kids! The first time we went to Disney World as a family, we had an 8 year old and two five year olds and it was SERIOUS planning time! Today I'm sharing my best tips and tricks for traveling to Disney with kids!

I love the Walt Whitman quote--so important to keep in mind at Disney. I have encountered so many grandmothers trying so hard to make memories (especially with kids who didn't quite seem to know them that well). My husband and I call them the "Crazed Grandmas" and I always feel like taking them aside and telling them that my favorite memories of my grandparents at Disney were taking quiet walks with them after dinner and riding on the monorail and cracking jokes. You can't force the memories! Like anything in life, you have to go with the flow. During our last Disney trip with my parents and my kids (they were 1 and 3), my mom twisted BOTH her ankles a few days before our trip and we ended up spending most of our week at Old Key West. We had planned 4 days at the park, but we were having such a relaxing time at the resort that we only ended up doing 1 day at Magic Kingdom--it was perfect!

The five commandments! 100% that is soooo true! I am totally the cruise director and everyone on our family knows it’s not a democracy. you had 6-9 months to provide input - but now we’re here and it’s in writing - so please just consult your written itinerary for the day and if you have lost yours- there are multiple copies at the resort and in your email box. Our #1 commandment is, as you say, 'pack your patience' and help our kids pack theirs. ️ Great video!!!

Great tips! I have 5 kids, ages 2-15, so picking that top must-do for each kid is so important! Our last trip was Oct 2020. We rented DVC points prior to all the events of 2020 and would lose our money if we didn’t go. We weren’t comfortable eating indoors though... thank goodness for the villa! We did lots of heat and eat meals and my older kids had fun theming them. We took our Roku stick and watched movies on Disney+ while eating dinner. They came up with things like Pizza Planet pizza night while watching Toy Story and Jaq Jaq and Gus’ grilled cheese while watching Cinderella. Since the parks closed early, this gave us a fun night before taking a nighttime swim. I love your evening ideas. We’re doing our best to slow down and not feel the need to hit every ride every trip. Thanks!

Soooo many things to like about this video! Cruise director: my wife; Bathroom breaks: we call them "pit stops" (in our best Guido voices!); sometimes the most memorable things are the things that just happen without being planned. On our first trip our kids were 17, 13, and 7 and we ended up having a small water pistol fight with a cast member while having breakfast in a restaurant! It was awesome then and still memorable now almost 22 years later! Thanks Jen!

I have done Disney with my daughter's high school band, with my teenagers, with a young granddaughter & her parents, just with the granddaughter, with hubby & the granddaughter, solo, with friends, & finally with daughter/husband, granddaughter/husband & 2 great-grands 5 & 2. Never on an unlimited budget, & never at more than a value resort. Honestly most of our trips were off property. But even if we packed sandwiches & sodas & napped on a bench, we were at Disney & we had a blast. Memories were made.

I’m filing away the “one person goes to the bathroom, everyone goes” rule. When we finally return to Disney (crossing fingers 2022) we will actually have 2/3 kids potty trained and have to think about it! We have let coming on mountain time work in our favor, and we try to just keep our kids on MST so that their usual home bedtime lines up with fireworks and they can hang longer. It also has us eating at off peak times. Rolling with the inevitable hiccups in the plan has honestly produced some of our funniest memories. My husbands favorite story - carrying a very uncomfortable, constipated daughter out of MK as she waved to a confused cast member at the gate and yelled “bye! I love you! I need to go have a suppository!” 😅

Brb: Currently ordering giant wall art with that Walt Whitman quote to hang in every room in my house. 🤣 Also, I'm the go-to Disney expert for my friends and anyone who has kids younger than 8, I tell them to go buy a cheap umbrella stroller to take with them. Just for Epcot, like you said, or Animal Kingdom. You do not want to listen to your 6 year old whining when it's only noon because their little legs are tired. Maybe it's because I have littles right now, but this has been my favorite planning video so far. 😊

Great tips Jen! I went to Disney with 4 kids under the age of 8 but also 5 adults so that helped. But honestly what really helped us was having tons of snacks on hand. We had granola bars, apples, even p&j sandwiches etc in our back packs and while standing in line for rides we ate snacks. This prevented melt downs, also we didn’t have to stop for food as much. We did not have one melt down that day. It was fabulous.

I over plan everything, it’s just who I am. But our favorite moments are never planned. Like when we got caught in the rain and decided to just run through the puddles since we were soaked anyway. And a rainbow appeared over Beast’s Castle. We missed a fast pass, but it was worth it. Definitely important for me to remember it’s the memories together that is most important.

When we went with a 2 year old and a 5 year old, we planned to skip Epcot. Then my daughter asked to meet Anna and Elsa so we totally switched our plans and went to Epcot to meet them and skipped Hollywood Studios. They absolutely loved it! They loved doing Kidcot and getting all the little postcards from each country!

The ability to walk to/from HS from the EPCOT area resorts is one of those things that is underused and I completely agree that if everyone has the energy, this is the choice to make when heading back to the room. Leisurely walk also helps the legs muscles. I know if I leave a park and then get on a bus or boat for 20-30 minutes (or more) then standing up and getting off that boat/bus is somehow like the most difficult thing I've ever had to do!

We used a stroller at Disney up to age 7 for my twin boys. I also agree that your kids will definitely want to use the resort pool as much as they possibly can. They will often ask to leave parks early in order to go into pool for a couple hours before it closes each night.

It's fun to think about what *I* thought about our trips when I was a kit. We were within a 3 hour drive so we never stayed on property and pretty much only went to MK or Epcot. I just remember the long drive, a couple of rides (Small World, the old Gondolas that were in MK, Spaceship Earth) and lots and lots of walking. Walking everywhere :)

OH OH!! We did spring break 2 years ago on a tight budget!! Our budget was centered around controlling food costs too! We did breakfast at the campground (great budget saver there camping) but we packed a food bag of PB&Js, apples, bananas, and water bottles. My husband took out the entire loaf of bread, made sandwiches, and put them back into the loaf bag, lol. We got a locker and put our sweatshirts in the back and then our food. It saved us so much money that we were able to budget in a family splurge and did the dinner show at the campground. We didn't miss anything but made great memories.

I love these videos! We took my then 2 year old in 2019 on a very last minute trip and she did awesome until the very end of MNSSHP. We crashed HARD on the bus. She had the most fun in the pool! Went in Nov 2020 and had a blast! We definitely built in naptimes or rest times everyday! So much fun and great video! The keys are: snacks, rests, strollers, and being able to go with the flow. Also the higher the adult to kid ratio the better!

I think one of my (2) kids managed to get sick on every trip when they were young. We even have one bathroom at the MK which we lovingly call the "barfing bathroom". Yep, even those memories come back when we visit! Still had great trips, even with all the bumps in the road. Probably the craziest one was when we were standing in a line at MK and I looked at kid 1 and wondered what that spot was on his body. Yikes, realized he had the chicken pox. That ended that trip pretty quickly!!!

This video brought back memories of traveling when my kids were young. Our first trip they were 2 yrs and 4 yrs. People in line to check in at the airport were staring at us because we had car seats, stroller and suitcases, backpacks. So much stuff! What I’ve enjoyed most has been traveling to Disney at their different ages. Each time the trip was totally different. My kids are 24 and 26 now and still enjoy Disney with us. Great commandments! I don't know how practical this is (non-parent here) but as far as training for the trip, somehow training to stay up later and eat at non-traditional times and foods with extra sugar/fats (depending on the meal plan for the family for the trip). I've just seen so many meltdowns/crashes happen while seeing kids eating cheeseburgers and hot fudge sundaes at 9 p.m. I realize there isn't really a great way to practice this in advance, but I have a feeling that a lot of next-day plans end up getting altered because of it.

This is making me laugh out loud. My husband calls me the “cruise director” all the time. Our last trip (Aug of 2019) was an extended family vacation with 4 kids 3 and under, all in diapers. I wish they all needed a diaper change at the same time but that just didn’t happen. Hopefully our next trip we can implement one person goes to the bathroom, everyone goes to the bathroom.

I've incorporated some of your tips in our vacations. I waited till our son was 48 inches so he could ride all the rides. We practiced walking for one month before our vacation. All gifts from family members were Disney dollars so my son had his own money for snacks and souvenirs. It was a fun trip. While he may not have enjoyed every ride, he didn't have to redo any rides he didn't like if someone wanted to repeat something.

I make my kids wait until the third day before they are allowed to buy anything. Since there is so much merchandise I like for them to look around before getting a souvenir.

Love the video as always. I agree with everything you have said. My girls are getting older(12 and 13) now so I am seeing a shift in how are plans go at WDW. I did enjoy the one person in charge. I love rope drop. But our last trip the girls took much longer to get ready in the morning🤪. My husband said for this next trip I should plan on rope drop for me and he will join me with the girls when they got their hair and outfit just right!! 🤦‍♀️ I thought that was a great idea. This way we do not start off on the wrong foot😉 By the way, I must of missed when your Channel hit 17k. Congrats. 🎉

this has happened multiple times! Our last big trip they surprised me, though, because I said I was getting up early to get a boarding pass for rise and if nobody came with me that was fine - and they all showed up!

It's funny how our first trips to Disneyland Paris(which, by all means, you can NOT compare to WDW obviously but still)with our daughter were so much more easier then when she was older... seriously, she was a pretty easy toddler, but holy cow, she is 11 now and acting as if she is 16. Send help! :p The toilet rule made me laugh because yes.... happens all the time! 'No I don't need to go to the toilet!' yes but just try anyway ... 10 minutes of discussing later, she's finally on the toilet, rolling her eyes almost out of their sockets and what do I hear? Exactly! She DID had to go :p

We ALWAYS avoided MK on Weekends AND Mondays because most people fly in over the weekend and guess which park they want to visit first?
@JenLefforge
@JenLefforge 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Mondays can be busy! But the last few years we've noticed EVERY day is busy, honestly, but the weekends have stayed particularly bad because there are so many more annual passholders now.

Already "cruise directing" 2022. My husband wants to try going in the fall for Halloween festivities. That still seems soooooo far away and are they going to bring back the Not So Scary parties? We have only ever been in March during spring break. There are so many things we want to do! I haven't been able to talk my husband into a VIP tour, so it may have to be a longer trip to enjoy it all and not at break-neck speed!

No word yet on the parties and yes, I know it seems far away but it will be here before we know it!

Love this, as always! Your statement about going to the pool on the first day gave me pause, since you said that this is a winter trip. Is it really warm enough to go to the pool in the winter? Do they heat the pools? Thanks

When will you do a clothing or dollar tree video?

Great advice! One questions, why do a gift card instead of cash? It seems like with cash you'd have a better sense of how much you've spent and how much you have let since it's more tangible than a gift card. Also, what age did you start doing the gift card? Our first trip to Disneyland with our child was age 1.5, we did the "you can pick one item" since the price wasn't a concept that really stuck at that point. I'm guessing by 5 (since they start counting to 100) that maybe then something like $25-50 makes sense, but it also involves adding and subtracting, not to mention the tax thing which adds complications, so maybe by age 6-7?

A card is far more convenient and less likely to get lost and more like "real life". Thanks for warching!
