You know I feel this with Gaston Leroux a lot (with Phantom of the Opera)...I feel sad in a way that he never knew how "big" and popular and iconic his weird little story would become in the future, some 60 years after his death. So, good point...same goes for Victor Hugo and two of his stories! It's kind of depressing in a way lol
@tomaszlosinski8757 жыл бұрын
I'm not too sure if it matches the tone Victor was going for. I heard all about the dark reputation of the Disney film but when I watched it I was disappointed with many of the characters other than Frollo. They seem one dimensional and it might just be my opinion but their thick American accents takes away from the feel of it.
@blackngoldcuttlefish33907 жыл бұрын
I was actually most disappointed with Frollo! They made him just one-dimensional really bad. In the book, he kinda went from good/well-intentioned to dark and depraved. By changing him to be the murderer of Quasi's parents and guilt-tripped into adopting him -- totally different from the book where Quasimodo's parents dumped him and Frollo took him in out of pity. It really angered me haha. But at the end of the day, yes, the Disney cartoon was really different. Pheobus was totally changed, too. He was a jerk in the book, with his hit-it-and-quit-it attitude.

Josh Sauer Unfortunately its under the Disney name and Disney has a reputation for "family fun" than it does for "epic tear jerking opera", Disney doesn't know how to sell it as such, the Disney brand gets in the way of that (its why in the 80s they had to create Touchstone for a time, because they couldn't market mature films under the Disney name). If this weren't Disney, it would easily be the next Les Miserables

+Julianne Hannes ugh i hope it doesn't become the next les miz. No offense to Les Miz but that show is way too melodramaticand is plot-driven. The Hunchback musical on the other hand has too many undertones and the songs relies on character developments and motifs that couldn't be pulled off if it got Les Miz treatment. Seriously the only bad reviews Hunchback received is because it closely resembled Les Miz which is duh, it's written by Victor Hugo as well but anyway...

I feel like HOND has a score that seems most ‘musical-like’, if that makes sense, which is why so many people were disappointed that this never made it to broadway. ‘Musical’ isn’t one genre, but I think that such a featured use of a choir and orchestra in HOND sets it apart from other Disney movies. It makes me think of its songs as both focusing on narrative and musical value instead of just using numbers as a mechanism to further the story and character development. Other Disney films have beautiful score, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like HOND really knocked it out of the park in terms of showcasing the characters as well as the accompaniment and orchestra.

Most of those contracts were probably signed before a decision to transfer would have been made, so even if Disney wanted to send it, they'd lose half their cast. There was also a lot of criticism that it strayed too far from the movie, which is disappointing because either Menken or Schwartz stated in a different interview that they purposely were trying to work more from the source material (the original novel), and that it had a distinctly darker tone than the animated movie...but people get stuck in a rut with old Disney movies and refuse to see anything other than a 1 for 1 copy.

I'm so salty about this not being on Broadway-- yes, Disney has a less gritty reputation, and YES, it would cost so much to hire the entire choir, and equity stuff, and blah blah blah-- but this version is so unique-- it mixes the Disney movie with the book, it has humor, it has wit, it has loss and heartache, it has dark and sinister themes, but it also has that spirit of love and hope, and everything. Pair that with these actors, and you've got an amazing, beautiful piece of theatre. It deserves to be seen by everyone around the world. That finale gives me chills EVERY TIME. I was lucky enough to be cast in a production of this wonderful show, and I have never been so close to a cast, I have never been so attached to a show, and I have never been so moved by a show. It is truly one of the best shows out there, and I just can't believe how incredible the composers, lyricists, and writers are. Every single person that I talked to after a show was just in awe of how insanely breathtaking this show is. Moments during the show moved the audiences to cheer, scream, cry, and laugh, it touched everyone that viewed it. And I give full credit to the score and the script. (Side note; this is really hard to perform well. I mean wow, who saw that coming)

Is it shameful that this version of 'Someday' and the Finale piece made me tear up? I'm still sobbing...
@eocavanaugh8 жыл бұрын
nope! Samantha, the soloist, is one of the reasons that the finale breaks my heart and the way everyone sings multi vocal is great!
@cas29146 жыл бұрын
Nope. Ciara Renee's voice and vulnerability in Someday makes my eyes well up every single time I listen to it. The Finale leaves you emotionally numb and almost hopeless, but the message that it states makes you really really think about the world and the need to stand up for love and justice.

When Disney inevitably does the live-action remake for Hunchback, here are the things we better see: 1. The original ending (I know it might be scarring for kids, but doing it in the stage production had a much more profound impact. I couldn't see it ending any other way.) 2. The added songs (Made of stone, in particular, has to be in the movie.) 3. Seeing the spirits of the gargoyles, religious statues, bells, etc. as Quasimodos imagination and hallucination (It would show how truly alone he feels and make Made of Stone even more impactful.) 4. Frollo's backstory and connection to Quasimodo (I feel the stage production added so much more dimension to the character by giving him a sympathetic background and making his internal struggle more complex than the original movie. I would also love it if they had Patrick Page reprise the role. He did such an excellent job on stage, and I would love to see it on film.) If Disney does not tick at least one of these boxes, I will not see the movie.

I was a state too, in those first few seconds I thought "must buy this..." Then bought it.... Originally wanted the fave tracks but bought the whole album. Even the new tracks which I sometimes feel are "written because they had to be..." Are perfection and deserve their place among the originals! I see and understand Disneys argument against the cost of the cast but If this was "Out There" Box Office History would be rewritten!

I MAINTAIN that The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the BEST Disney movie of all time. The score is absolutely breathtaking and moving, the animation and gloriously detailed backgrounds are unparalleled, the villain is positively LOATHSOME, and the final message about true justice and triumph over hate and bigotry are even more important now than when the movie first came out. Thank you for coming to my run-on sentence of a TEDtalk.

The fact that this isn't going to be on Broadway. The fact that I will not be able to see it in my city on tour. Royally PISSES me off. The has the potential the be THE greatest Disney Broadway show ever and they choose to go with Frozen... I love Frozen. But not for Broadway. This soundtrack is pure art and nothing can beat it. It's right up there with Beauty And The Beast for me. Maybe if I actually saw it it would surpass it? Hmm? But nooooooo
@ThatLexPlays8 жыл бұрын
Problem is having a choir onstage every show would prove to be too costly for producers and for Equity. Frozen doesn't require a choir and say what you want about it, it was a musical original written and performed by Broadway vets. It's not a perfect show and not the best Disney movie by any means, but it's a huge success for Disney and it is going to do very well on Broadway.
@KingQueerio6 жыл бұрын
Kayla Dahl I agree!!!
@KeldorDAntrell6 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how greedy people are. If they expect at least as much pay as usual for a different show rather than modify their pay to account for the extra cost of putting on Hunchback, they could have done it. Also, the ticket prices can be increased especially with a press release on the reason why. There was no insoluble problem, just one that wasn't solved because of a minority of avaricious fools. In this day and age a visual recording of a single show could be sold repeatedly, globally, for another way to make it pay. Another variable that they had to work with was the length of the Broadway run.
@dmg37365 жыл бұрын
Keldor D'Antrell no the union straight up wouldn’t let them take the full choir. It wasn’t a “oh the tickets will be X amount more” it was “oh we need to rework the score to compensate for lower numbers and we have to cut some of our beloved cast and friends”

I'm an organist, and I was driving to a town 2 hours away to practice for a mini-recital a couple of weeks out, when I found out about the fire. Listened to CNN on the radio the rest of the way there and the whole way back, just numb to everything. I was able to change one piece on the program to pay homage (Boellmann's Priere a Notre Dame, beautiful piece). The next time I drove to the town again, I discovered I had some tracks from this cast recording with me and started tearing up as I sang along.
