Mom and Dad took the three kids to WDW over Memorial Day weekend in 1974. First plane ride, first time in Florida, first BIG family trip. Didn't get to Cypress Gardens but did make a stop at Sea World. Fifty years ago but memories so strong In even remember the smells.

I'll bet that the whole shooting match, door to door and back WASN'T more than $700 either. And that was LIVING REALLY HIGH at the time. I remember my aunt and uncle taking me on a 2 week trip across the eastern half of the country and seeing everything from Virginia, up to Maine, up through Canada and back down to Ohio. Stayed in motels the entire trip... Ate three meals a day in really decent restaurants and visited EVERY tourist trap, museum and Theme Park along the way. I remember my Uncle Mike complaining about it costing him $500 by the time we got back home 😂

This is charming. Like peering into the not so distant past and realising how much has actually changed. Those polyester pant suits (aka leisure suits). Wild. The wide open highways. The area between the contemporary hotel and mk entrance not built up yet. Just palm trees. Thanks so much for sharing this video.

I went there in 1972 I had forgotten how open everything was with the lack of landscaping. It was better back then. I have an old ticket book. It was $6.50 to get in to the park. I have probably been there maybe 100 times in the last 50 years but now it all about how many people they can cram in and how much money then can bring in. I talked with an employee once around time around 1990 at the Polynesian Resort. He had worked there before the opening. He said that Walt would roll over in his grave if he knew what they were doing to the place.

In 1975 we drove from CT to FL in a 1974 Ford LTD, no air conditioning, vinyl bench seats, mom and dad, me and my two older sisters. The ONLY things at WDW were the Magic Kingdom, Ft. Wilderness, Contemporary, the golf course and the Polynesian Resort. We also went to Cyprus Gardens - that is something I could have done without as a 7-year old.

Thinking about this: it’s ten years after the ‘64 NY world’s fair. If you went to Wdw then, there was only one park, two hotels and the campground. They had their trusty rv. Smart move. Snow on ground when they left the Midwest. Memorable and nostalgic.

Was there in '74 and '75. In '74 though the exterior was built Space Mountain did not open until '75. Yes a lot of space and greenery. you turned off of 4 and drove and drove through with nothing but forests on both sides of you, then suddenly Disneyworld opened up in front of you. Truly magical in a way that most people today don't know and can never be recaptured. It reached the point of no return with the new Fantasyland when they got rid of Mr. Toad, Snow White's Scary Adventures and 20,000 Leagues. My favorite part of the park. And the Diamond Horseshoe Revue in Frontierland was a joy. Now the Magic Kingdom does not have the sparkle and richness it once had. And they are chipping away at Frontierland. But people today don't know so they don't miss it. What an exhausting expensive ordeal it must now be.

Nice to see this as it was when I was a kid. It was a magical time. I still look back on it fondly as an adult. Hey, if you go back in time, next time don't focus so much on the water skiing and the parade. Boring! Focus more on the rides. You got the 20,000 League's Under The Sea ride but where's The Haunted Mansion or The Pirate's of The Caribbean or The Jungle Cruise? Those were my favorites.
