Dispelling myth that nerve damage causes permanent tinnitus

Nerve damage may trigger and set up the initial tinnitus pattern but this does not mean you are stuck with permanent tinnitus. Far from it, most people report that their tinnitus gets better and worse depending on stress levels, tiredness, and adrenaline levels, dietary issues and hundreds of other factors. If your tinnitus gets noticeably better and noticeably worse, then this shows that your tinnitus is not being perpetuated by nerve damage. Nerves cannot regrow and then become damaged again on a daily basis. This is a physiological impossibility.

Thank you so much for being a positive force for tinnitus sufferers like me! Everyone is either clueless and or doesn't care or they know about it, but are negative as far as any help for it. No one talks about tinnitus much. It's not a very big concern out there. So thank you for being there for us! ;)

From my own experience I can attest Julian is very much correct about the nerve damage. I've had low level tinnitus in one ear for 20 years. I'm a part time musician so I've always worn ear protection. One day my tinnitus became severe. My actual tinnitus level was only 6dB above my hearing threshold, but I learned that your perception can make it sound very much louder than it is.

Sounds logical for my. I got mine from an incident at the shooting range. I accepted the fact that i got this special sound because appearently some specific haircells have been damaged/destroyed. But i never understood why it might get worse over time or additional sounds would appear just by that without exposing myself to other loud sounds. I really like mr Hill's approach on this whole subject. I do have mine now for a year and it already dropped in volume so that i can already sleep again with my ear on the pillow and without backround noises. I think it might be possible to get rid of it completely if i start practising mr Hills recommandations.

Not nerve damage as such but nerve irritation is the cause. Most likely due to bulging or herniated discs.

Dear Julian, I find your vids very helpful and I am thankful for what you do, so no offense here, but: if you got rid of your noise induced tinnitus within 6 weeks, which is a relatively short time after the accident, couldn't it be that the T just went away by itself? Did you have patients with noise induced "chronic" tinnitus where the symptoms backed off permanently, or just temporary?
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 6 жыл бұрын
No. I had to work on myself to bring the levels of activation down to a low level again. This takes time. I had to bring myself out of the fear loop and settle my nervous system down, and take my mind off the ringing. Yoga and tai chi are the best things for me for achieving this. Nothing is permanent. The way we react to things depends on how activated we are at the time. So if we can bring our overall reactivity down and hope that we have enough plain sailing to keep us in a good place then generally we can manage well.

I have tinnitus for last 2 months because of an ear infection sometimes I feel that it went away but whenever I plug my ear with my finger it is always there what about you if you go in a quiet room and plug your ear would you hear the sound please reply

Dr.Julian Thank you so much for your research on this topic. I only recently discovered you. I got my tinnitus from doing yoga breath work I was following a guided meditation during the retention phase of holding my breath the pressure build up and then release and one last breath hold for 15 to 30 seconds. After doing three rounds of this I started hearing a high pitch squeal in my head I thought this would go away after the pressure normalized but it has not I have suffered with this for 6 weeks now. I have gone to any ENT he told me, After running a few different tests that he thought I had what you call patulous eustachian tube dysfunction meaning that it stays in the open position. He told me that they could put an incision in my eardrums to release the pressure instead of putting tubes in my ears to see if that would help. I am very hesitant to having any type of surgery like this but I am so desperate I don't know what to do I cannot sleep anymore. And since this has happened my blood pressure fluctuates from normal to high, I never had issues until doing this yoga breath work I have been told that it's just energy That is stuck in my head, but I do not know how to calm it down. My body is in the constant adrenaline fight or flight mode It will not turn off. I am so exhausted and I don't know how much more of this I can take. I am going through all of your videos right now, and I plan on purchasing your "Tyrant to Friend" ebook. Are you familiar with this issue happening to anyone else in regards to yoga breath work and the retention breath hold phase??? Thank you for what you do any advice would be most appreciated at this time Thank you again. Sincerely, CJ

Yes I have come across this before. It's best to ease into the breath work gently. Before any surgery please have a face massage and practice my evening face massage which involves a lot of yawning. See my app here in level one techniques: www.quietenapp.com When we're stressed muscles get tight, tense and tired so de-stressing these muscles can help the eustachian tubes get back into normal function. Practising gentle yoga and breathing and calming and soothing techniques helps all of this get better. It takes a bit of time but hopefully it is a pleasant pleasurable experience that gets you back into well-being. I hope this helps Best wishes Julian

@@JulianCowanHill Thank you so much for your reply. I will follow you advice as I am now currently going through your Quieten App. Learning along the way. Can this facial massage you speak off and yawning be done with my mouth closed, will that help also? It seems that there is another type of stretch that is going on doing this. When I open my mouth to yawn the high pitch squeal e eeeeeeee changes to and even higher tone. Kind of strange. Thanks again doctor Cowan I will be in touch.

Hey, my tinnitus is constant in my right ear. I got it for a week. It does'nt change sound, it stays the same. My left ear does fluctuate, sometimes the sound comes and sometimes it goes (when I stress it comes) My tinnitus probarbly is caused by stress, my hearing is okay. But I think my right ear is permanently damaged for some reason, because it always stays the same no matter how I feel.. Can you enlight me a bit maybe on this? Thank you for your video's though!

if our hearing has become over sensitive, as you say, wouldn't the rest of the world's sounds appear louder too? actually certain sounds do hurt mu left ear (mettle on mettle) so...
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 9 жыл бұрын
Yes. Everything becomes super-sensitised that sound can in fact become painful. This is called hyperacusis. It becomes difficult to focus on important sound, eg listening to your friends voice against the hubbub of the pub. You hear the hubbub and cannot distinguish your friends voice. When your system settles the sensitivity backs off and your ability to hear clearly and focus on what is important returns.

The central nervous system turns up the volume not the cochlea. At the Tinnitus Research Initiative conference in Dublin this summer they mainly focussing on the limbic system and central nervous system. Clinical practice has shown me time and time again that people with permanent hearing damage can get better. Tinnitus fluctuates and comes and goes with a large number of my clients and this shows that tinnitus cannot be due to nerve damage. I am profoundly deaf from nerve damage and my tinnitus has gone.

Hi I heard that overmastbation can actually cause tinnitus do you have any knowledge over this?
@JulianCowanHill
@JulianCowanHill 8 жыл бұрын
All I can say is that addiction to adrenaline is likely to keep tinnitus up. Lusty sexual activity can be adrenal, whereas lovemaking causes oxytocin to be secreted which is bonding and safe. So if you are masturbating to lusty porn on the internet, this is likely to keep you in a state of fight or flight. The more colloquial term is FIGHT OR FLIGHT, OR FU**!

I went to a concert a little over a year ago and during that concert I experienced a deep bass note that felt like it rattled the inside of my head. I've had a high pitched ringing ever since. The first month or so was filled with anxiety and depression, but gradually I learned how to cope. Tonight I noticed a new sound in my right ear as I was trying to sleep. It sounds like an old worn out electric engine in another room. (I confirmed it wasn't) Is this something I can expect as time goes by? Gradually getting worse and new symptoms appearing? I'm confused, scared and frustrated about the whole ordeal.

This can cause pain, distress and activation in the nervous system or stress response. Please seek the guidance of your doctor and ENT so that your ear can recover safely. Then once this has healed I would then see a craniosacral therapist to help settle the nervous activation and release any reactions still lingering.
