Don't do it! Contrary to what they say, VGA is still better, unless you need audio or resolutions, which VGA just doesn't do.

I still have not seen any example of the difference between vga and dvi and hdmi or dp regarding image quality. I do graphics and advertising for print, tv, internet and advanced color correction and all kind of graphics for many years and my eyes are trayned so i can notice really small changes in hue, brightness, contrast, gamma and so on but i failed to notice the difference between dvi and vga, hdmi,dp on standard 1680 or even HD resolution on a proper calibrated monitor. I'm using 3 monitors, one Eizo 22", dell 22. and one Lg led tv ( so i cover 3 types of image displays, proper high end calibrated ones, standard average monitors and standard tv's) and i have tested all connections, display port, dvi, hdmi and so on and all types of conversions. Conclusiion is, if u proper calibrate a monitor ,vga, dvi, hdmi, dp, make no difference unless you go above HD res of course. The most important thing is not the connection but first thing one should do after buying a new monitor is to calibrate the monitor!

I just stated it as a comment, but DVI, HDMI & Display port have copy protection, which VGA does not. But if you don't use it to watch movies you should be ok!

I've always used VGA for my monitor because it's what I always had around. finally I was building my own computer (my first time) I was trying to figure out what's the difference. your video was the best describing all three vs written infob on the net. now I will be using either HDMI or a Display Port. Thanks so much!

I've been using dvi single for almost 12 years and since a couple of months ago i bought a dual-link version to support the higher 144hz that my new monitor is going to use. But now i have seen the display port and came to my senses, i want to purchase a displayport cable. For my ps3 i use a high-speed hdmi 1.4. Btw Linus, you are wrong...Everybody should care about this video because i still see people complaining the can't use more than 60hz while they use a VGA cable.

oh... and I'm using triple VGA outputs (3 monitors, each at a relatively low resolution (1280*1024)) offers me a good enough quality for what I need but the point about using HIGH quality VGA cables is completely true. you can still pick up some decent quality ones for a reasonable price. and a GOOD VGA cable is probably about the same as an average DVI cable anyways.

For a while I was using a vga-to-dvi adapter that came with an old nvidia card I had, but recently I got my hands on a dvi cable, and since my monitor has a port for one, I went ahead and switched. That's the whole reason I even stumbled upon this video, because I wanted to know more about the differences. :) One thing I noticed even with the adapter I used before which was improved over vga, was the fact my bios and linux grub menu were fitting more text on the screen than vga did.

DVI is what I use and will continue to use. The only VGA connection used in my home is from my wife's laptop to connect to our TV. But we do not do that often. I might try the DVI to HDMI cable to connect my super computer to my TV. Thanks for that tip. I would love to see how Diablo 3 looks on a 55 inch screen. My VGA CRT 2048x1536 @ 75hz monitor has better image quality than a 1440p LCD where everything looks like Lego it's so blocky and omfg scaled resolutions ,EVERY resolution on a CRT is "native". Sadly for me I'm stuck at a lowly 1920x1200 as my card has no analogue and DAC's in DP to VGA converters dont seem to go over 180hz (at a reasonable price at least). I should have bought a 780ti instead... The Apple mini-dp to vga dongles claim to have a 240hz(?) DAC but thats mini-dp... so the technology exists but not in the package I need.

It's near 2015 as i post this, and I hookup my computer to the 1080p LG 40 inch TV. I tried to first hook up using the HDMI, but the colors and the image came out very terrible, so I hooked it up using the DVI with VGA adapter and the display came out to my likings. I would love to try the displayport, but both TV, and the graphic card I have has no connectivity for such kind. Perhaps if i bought the latest sets of TV or the graphic card, maybe I'll experience the difference. Thank you once again for the awesome video about this. I actually cared about this segment of the video.

The difference between dvi-i and dvi-d is that the "d" variant has the cross-shaped pin arrangement that is necessary to use a vga adapter. That aside, the dvi ports are identical so feel free to use the other dvi port on your gpu. As for the Extend problem, try to select it using the dvi port. If that doesn't work, check the multi-monitor options on the nvidia control panel.

When the tower is not hooked up to said projector, I use an HDMI to DVI on my 20" 1600x900 HP monitor. when I plug my laptops into said 20" screen, I have to use a VGA adapter/VGA adapter. I am on a mid-range laptop at the mo with full HD and a dedicated graphics card, or be it a reasonably low end one. I however will soon be getting a high end desktop custom rig and will be using display port for the simple reason it is one cable that has both FullHD video and audio, and is really the only current connector that is in any way 4K ready , although I think they are working on HDMI2.0 which is interesting as the latest HDMI can also support ethernet natively

DP on my G-sync 1440p 27" Acer for gaming, HDMI to my Vizio 51" 1080p TV - I run cable into my PC and to either TV/Monitor as I want, and have free DVR capabilities (Comcast charges extra for a DVR box!) - also I can easily control everything from anywhere. Obviously I sit at my desk for gaming on my 1440 monitor, but for video/TV I can control any TV setting, as well as access my 300+ hours of digital videos from my couch or bed and watch it all on my Vizio. I also have my kickass stereo plugged directly into the digital out from my PC, CRYSTAL audio, with a Sharp 1-bit digital receiver 120 watt/channel to 4 bookshelf speakers with 40hz-24khz response and a 350w powered 8" sub that goes down to 22hz. My PC does EVERYTHING - and of does it ALL perfectly! I REALLY do not get why more people don't ditch consoles and DVR boxes for a fully integrated PC setup like mine. Any SandyBridge CPU with even just one GTX 760 will game anything at 1080p perfectly well at 60+ fps and high to max settings as well as link to a TV/second monitor for video uses, or if you are a REAL couch gaming die-hard, just buy a wireless controller of your liking, sit back, and game at REAL 1080p with AGGRESSIVE image quality settings and better aniso and anti-alaising!

I am using HDMI because I had no idea about refresh problems and my monitor is only capable of 60hz regardless in 1920 x 1080 but I am getting a new one from Asus that supports 144hz with an Dual link DVI but am wondering if nVidia's GeForce GTX 780 Ti supports dual link or only single link?

I think this video has helped me a lot, thank you! I just bought an Acer S236HL monitor which for some reason would shrink the viewable screen when at highest resolution. But now that I know you can get a DVI to HDMI adapter, it should fix that and still leave my VGA socket to use with my old monitor as a dual monitor! :-D

I use 3 monitors at the same time, VGA, HDMI and USB all through gold cabling. Don't feel a need to change it because it's nice having such a flexible card built in and everything runs at an amazing quality with frame rates topping out at 343 fps. And this is on a 2012 Toshiba Satellite with no modifications.

I have 2 monitors connected to my Laptop. One is using VGA as that's the only input it has, the other is using DVI, but I have a converter in the middle that takes the HDMI out signal from my laptop and sends it though the DVI cable. Best AUD$1.10 i've spent so far.

Using VGA since I've been using that since I had this LCD monitor (4-5 years old) - it shipped with a VGA cable and a VGA/DVI convertor. I'm a bit disappointed about that cable now, since this monitor might be old, but also has both DVI and HDMI outputs. With a new pc coming next week, I'm definitely changing it. Just pondering between DVI/HDMI by checking the prices at local stores and webshops (which is why I'm here). Availability and prices seem very random, with HDMI slightly easier and cheaper to purchase.

With dvi, can you use a dual link out put from the video card, with a single link input on a monitor?

HDMI always because of high quality video and audio, and it is the standard for multiple peripherals. I have a dual display setup-37" and a 19" on my desk. (I have a big desk). Audio to both displays, lovin it.

I'm buying a Asus Sabertooth Z87 and I'm assuming it's phasing out the use of DVI in back I/O ports. If I have any issues with my GPU I'll need to connect to my monitor via HDMI. It'll be nice not to deal with the bulky cables.

I want to get one of the new Asus Chromeboxes that are coming out and connect it to my two or three year old Asus 23" monitor. The monitor has VGA and DVI inputs. The box has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Sounds like a HDMI to DVI cable is all I need and it should work just fine. Correct?

DVI-D, DVI-D, VGA I planned on changing to HDMI for the VGA. The GTX 780 is normal HDMI where my old video card was mini HDMI. I don't have an extra HDMI cable.

my question is can I use a converter to plug a dvi cable to the vga port on my laptop and still get the same quality as dvi without using my hdmi port. will a vga port (w/converter) still output the same res to a dvi cable as a dvi port would

are you sure your right with display port? i have converted to hdmi and dvi with out effort and as far as i can tell my adapters dont have converters. the only problem i have ever had is with a 2009 mac mini which is early display port and needs apples (i think active adapter which gets power from the port not usb) but a non active adapter i fined works fine with newer display ports

I am using VGA right now at 60 Hz and full 1080p. Planning on switching to DVI with my new EVGA GeForce GTX 660 FTW w/ EVGA ACX Cooler. And after this video I am switching big time. I didn't know just one cord could change everything that much.
