Henry now looks beyond Jodorowsky's failed attempt to film Dune, at the Italian producer and the other surrealist director who would finally succeed in bringing the book to the screen. The results turn out to be mixed.

The Spicediver edit is the perfect marriage of Herbert's story and Lynch's style. Well worth checking out.

You covered Dino very well. It also struck us when you mentioned Conan, and how Arnold said to him the first time he met Dino, "why does such a small man like you need such a big desk." Dino was akin to De Mille or Samuel Bronston with how he rose, climax, and in similar fashion fell from films. The Dune analysis was exceptionally interesting. It's ironic with all the time spent on screen plays, perhaps Dino should have just accepted Frank Herberts Screen play and paired it down. We have seen the original David Lynch Film and the Extended addition. The Extended Addition has a better ending, more true to the book, but over all it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Bravo again, and on to part 4.

Lynch's Dune has been dismissed a lot, but despite all its faults, I do love the film and have seen it twenty, maybe even as many as fifty times. The first time I saw it, I was a little boy, and the early scenes really stuck with me. The beautiful Princess Irulan telling us the history of that time, the testing of Paul with the pain machine... The bit that really wowed me and stuck with me was the Spice Navigator's visit to the imperial palace which was like nothing I had seen before. I hadn't read the book at this point, so I had nothing to compare it to, but Lynch's Dune really affected me in a way that, say, Star Wars didn't. Star Wars was cute and the battle scenes are probably better done, but I think Herbert's world(s) had such a richness and depth to them that you don't find in Star Wars, and some of that did come over in the film. I've never really had a huge problem following the plot, however, and don't understand why people do. One plot point which is never addressed though, is that Jessica is a Harkonnen - she has reddish hair, and there may well be something in the extended version but it gives a different spin. So yes, there are umpteen problems with it as a film, but is it a total failure? No, and it never was. The sets (apart from maybe the Fremen ?sietches) are pretty amazing, as are the costumes. There are also some interesting performances in here - by Sian Phillips for example.

Audiences preferred "McDunealds" (Star Wars). Lucas adapted Dune into a more visual and kid-friendly version.

I like the guy who played Stilgar. I’m not sure about the guy who plays Stilgar in Denis Vilneuve’s Dune; he doesn’t seem exotic enough to me. And the stilsuits in Lynch’s version are still the best. The stilsuits should have head coverings as that’s where a majority of heat and sweats escapes the body. Lynch’s Dune wasn’t great, but nor was it horrible.

Despite everything, I love the Lynch film, battle scenes and all. Personally, I think it's the glorious soundtrack that saves it. (Funnily enough, I'm also a huge fan of "Trick of Treat" - 16:46)

Lynch’s “Dune” is definitely a David Lynch film. You can definitely see the weird touches that are Lynch. I don’t think “Dune” can be done in one film; like a book I consider it’s fantasy cousin, “Lord of the Rings”, it needs several movies to tell the story correctly. Like “LOTR”, Dune has a complex, complicated backstory. Thankfully, it seems now they’ve doing the book justice in that regard. The Lynch movie isn’t perfect, but I love the little details in it- like the extremely baroque sets of the Emperor’s palace; even things like the gold ornate entrance to the huge ship used to fold space just adds this almost neo- feudal element you find in the background of the entire book. I also think it’s funny how he borrows some ideas from Jodorowsky- he has Sting cast instead of Mick Jagger, Toto does the soundtrack instead of Pink Floyd. It’s definitely a better movie than it was taken to be when it first was released.

I once talked to Mark Mothersbaugh about Dune and he said DEVO had been hired by Di Laurentiis to do the soundtrack. When they played it for him, Mark said Dino was going beserk yelling "More melody, more melody!" He took the job away from DEVO and gave it to Toto. To this day I wonder about the "O" connection here: Dino, DEVO, Toto.

I loved the studio released Lynch Dune and bought it on VHS, DVD, and Blu Ray. I remember the Televised extended version as too long and stretched out, But I'd read the book a few times before the movie was released and knew the story line well. Thanks!

To be honest with you, I love David Lynch's grotesquely comical Dune. I do . I am a David Lynch fan. For my money, I don't think it gets any better than when he twisted everyone's expectation of what Dune should be. I celebrate the guy's entire catalogue.

Thank you for all the work you've put into these videos. It must take a lot of industry understanding and time to put these videos together. Interestingly, one of the big take aways I'm getting from these is how white, male and euro-american the whole movie making industry is, from actors, to directors, to producers, to independent financial backers to film executives. The vastly limited view this generates in our cultural landscape is jaw dropping once realised. Also, that Ridley dropped Dune because he needed immediate activity in order to take his mind off his brother's death highlights the abysmally lacking processing of grief that is epidemic within white and male-centric society. That we all spend such a large amount of time ingesting and regurgitating the creative outputs of such people speaks to the mindsets and societal predispositions of inequality and hardened emotional bitterness that we live within.

I actually like David Lynch's DUNE I don't see it as a failure. . Even though there was a lot of it I didn't understand when I was a kid, who cares? It just FELT epic, and I liked his production design and the FEEL of this world he created. A failure at the box office, sure, but it was hugely popular on HBO and at the time was considered a very important movie.

I have yet to see Lynch's Dune. I probably should reserve judgement but from what I have seen, the soundtrack isnt half bad, the visuals are unique, and it sounds like it follows the book decently enough. I found scenes with the Emperor unintentionally laughable with lines like "Send in the floating fat man, the Baron" as if there were other floating fat men in the area? I admit I am at least curious to watch it. I'm about 75% through the book and I love it so far
@anonb46324 жыл бұрын
There are good and bad aspects of it. I first saw it as a little boy and there were parts of it which were not like anything else I'd seen. I've seen it at least twenty times, probably more. I'm well aware of its faults, but it does have something. Most of the sets and costume design are pretty cool for example. There is one criticism which has stuck with me. A year or two back, someone said they didn't like the yellowness of the film, and that is a criticism I can't get past. A lot of it is a sandy yellow. As for the "floating fat man" line... I suppose it's just to show the Emperor's contempt. He views House Atreides as a threat, but genuinely despises the Harkonnens as repulsive. I suppose there are aspects you have to approach as a pantomime.

As always most people resonate with personal details. The 'Look' of a movie can be a filmmaker's conceit and downfall. There was so much personal detail in the original books. They were basically thrown away. The details are what made people love it. I say this ironically as a wanna be photographer.
