Wonderful reaction and commentary. Your knowledge about the great players from the past is refreshing. Bird had some really rough nights scoring. There was a game where he went 0-9 from the floor and took zero foul shots and scored 0 points in a game. He play 37 minutes in that game and had 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Keep doing what you're doing. Larry Bird is the best all-around player in NBA history, he could do it all.

Everyone who played Larry Bird will tell you the same thing, the reason Bird was such a trash talker is because he could back it up on the court.

James Worthy said he’d rather guard Michael Jordan then Larry Bird because when guarding Larry Bird you had to be a thinker; you had to get in his head and try to be a step ahead of him which was basically impossible.

@@JasmineTVworld as Linniebrooke said as well Michael Cooper (who is known as one of the greatest defenders of all time (between him or Rodman in my mind)), he’d rather guard Jordan than Bird. Cooper said when guarding Jordan once he passed the ball or shot the ball you could take it easy, but with Bird he never stopped moving, going in for rebounds, making a cut in case he could get a pass to get a better shot, or just plain hustling to get a loose ball, he never quit and his motor was always running. Bird has also said that Michael Cooper was the toughest defender he ever played against. Cooper couldn’t really stop him once bird had the ball, but Bird admitted Cooper was the best at covering him so he couldn’t get the ball to begin with.

Jerry Schisting ( sisting) was on the 86 team. He's the one that Ralph Sampson hit in the face on game 6 finals in 86. He was like a steve kerr type player. Back up DEAD EYE shooter. If he didn't shoot as great as he did probably wouldn't have been in the league. But 6'1 off the bench marksman, he helped spread the court for chief and mchale. Doc was solid. He made All-Stars one year. But he was in a tough east division. And don't remember seeing Bird have bad game, saw him miss two free throws in a row once in a tight game, and the whole world was surprised. Seriously, we've been telling you, he's different for sure.

See-sting is how I've heard it pronounced. He and Wedman were huge assets to the team, in my opinion. Kite also had his uses in rough battles under the basket, particularly. IMHO of course. 😊

Larry had some bad shooting nights but every one does. The thing is he could have a bad shooting night and still have a great impact because of his passing, rebounding, and hustle. he did so many things at a high level.

I think it’s important to consider what is a sometimes “hidden lethality” in Legend’s game. I’ll paraphrase a former player, “you guard Jordan and he puts up a shot, that’s pretty much it whether he makes it or not. With Bird, you have to follow him AFTER shots because he’s equally lethal WITHOUT the ball.” And that’s true. Bird was a killer off-ball. That’s why Dr. J was befuddled and why Worthy is grabbing as much jersey as humanly possible. LB’s PRESENCE ON THE FLOOR ALONE was a dangerous proposition. Surely one of the most dangerous men WITHOUT a ball in his hands.

I guess I’m an old lady I was blessed to have a father, who was obsessed with sports- basketball in particular. My dad had three daughters; no sons. Once they started televising basketball, he’d sit us in front of the black & white TV and we would watch the games. I knew what a pick and roll was by the time I was 8-9 years old, could spot a travel or goal tending. I grew to love basketball and I was a New York Knicks fan. People are right when they say that the NBA was dying in the mid 70s. In the late 70s, early 80s Magic and Bird resurrected the NBA. I was still a New York Knicks fan, but never missed a game when Larry Bird played. I was even blessed to have watched him play live at MSG a few times. There was something about him…like electricity. The minute he stepped on the court you knew something special was going to happening; and it always did. He had a need to win, it was a challenge to him, and his competitive spirit was almost obsessive. He had the highest basketball IQ that I have ever seen to this day. I don’t watch much anymore only because it’s a different game. There doesn’t seem to be the dedication or the desire to fight to win like there was back then. Again even though I was a diehard Knicks fan, Larry Bird is my favorite player of all time… He is my GOAT. I just don’t think there is anybody that has been more driven, has been a better team leader, and who has challenged himself more than LB. As I’ve said many times, he is a gift from the basketball gods!

I think his game against Craig Elo was one of his most savage and funny moments. In the first half of the game Bird was having a rough start 1 for 10 from the field. At the arena they were playing in, both teams walked off the court in the same tunnel. Craig Elo puffed up to Bird and said, “1 for 10, that’s some defense.” Bird simply replied, “There are two halves,” and kept walking. That fired Bird up, and once the second half started he hit 8 or 9 buckets in a row on Elo, the last of which was left handed. After draining the off hand shot, he turned to Elo and asked, “Is your mother watching?”

I'm from Boston and saw Larry's entire career and occasionally he would have an off shooting night but in those games he compensated by grabbing double digit rebounds or assists. Larry just wanted to win period. The Celtics in the 80's were a team in the truest sense. Trust me if Larry wanted to he could easily drop 35-40pts a night and some nights he knew he would have to. I really think video games and ESPN hi-lights have changed the perspectives of players today. Back when Larry played ESPN was just getting started nevermind video games. The mentality of players back then was all about winning stats didn't mean shit

How did we get through this without somebody saying Bird was slow & unathletic? When you're over 6-9" it's hard to see the speed, and that's why he blew past so many quick defenders.

Bird was **NEVER** selfish. Did he want to win? YES. But make no mistake, Bird was probably the most selfless player in NBA history. He did everything he could to get everyone on the team involved, but if he felt like they weren't into the game, he had no problem carrying the team on his back.

Doc Rivers was awesome at Basketball. A great guard, who defensively was very impressive and fast. Very physical player who created plays because he was a good shooter as well. One game, Doc dove for a loose ball and lost two front teeth and continued to play the game.

Larry did have quite a few nasty injuries over the years so its possible the reason he could be having a bad night is the injuries being particularly difficult to deal with. Another thing is larry when he was hurt he never used drugs so when he had a lot of pain he occasionally turned to alcohol to dull the pain. For all we know he could have been buzzed or even sloshed yet no one noticed because he was that damn good. Then there is the fact that on one occasion larry got a head injury and had a concussion. As a result he had double vision and had to guess which was the correct basket. Until they diagnosed something was wrong he played on multiple games as this was back before they understood fully what concussions were. Its a bloody miracle larry didnt get CTE. Oh and Erving attacked bird because they were in a sort of unofficial scoring competition and while erving got only 9 larry was scoring constantly. He kept repeating the score to erving. As larry's score kept going higher and higher and higher erving got more and more pissed with each score reminder until larry got to 49. After that larry told Erving it was time to retire. Erving blew a gasket and went right after bird. hehe Now that is disrespectful. hehe

During a game against Chicago, Jordan was having a tough time guarding Bird. Collins, Bulls coach at the time, put in the much bigger white player Ben Poquette. Bird took it as an insult and began schooling Poquette and ultimately Collins.

Once he told his teammates He's going to not go out drinking before game's and was going to be in bed by a proper time. And Started the game 0-8 and said never again. But very seldom did he have a BAD shooting night it's like seeing a Blood Moon 🌝 doesn't happen allot... Because he practiced more than anyone else.

Jerry Sichting was a great shooting guard for Celtics '85-88 and was a key player off the bench. Not a star but a very valuable cog in the big Celtic machine. Doc Rivers made the All Stars one year. A very good player but not a major star. Excellent man and an excellent coach.

Larry had many games where he wasn’t being god tier in the shooting. Yet he somehow managed to still be very influential during the game. It was one of his greatest skills, he could really influence the game even without the ball. It’s why so many greats put him over Jordan. Jordan had to make plays to influence the game, Larry didn’t.

Sure Larry had bad games scoring but he’d have double digit rebounds and assists. Some games his passes were way off and he made a lot of turnovers and then in the fourth quarter or money time,He’d be the man but more times than not Larry Bird was the man. Just like with magic, you watched his games because he was going to always do some crazy thing with a repeat passing rebounding or some crazy off-balance shot. If he’s shooting was hot early, lights out game over !!
