The game isnt more skilled today stop it. People who say this have no idea what they are talking about. The game is more free today then its ever been, the league has soften the rules to make offense more easier for the players while also being more lenient with the players. Its gotten so bad the nba has to encourage guys to play games with all this load managment bs.

@dustincowart6767 Ай бұрын
The game is more “skilled”, but that doesn’t mean players today are better basketball players. It just depends on what rules you play under. You don’t need “enforcers” in today’s game, so those guys have been replaced with shooters. If you could still get hammered and elbowed in the paint and hand check on defense, this era would be different.

@@dustincowart6767no,game is not more skilled,the game is just being played with a different skill set. Players today don't have some of the skills of past era(mid range,post game,2-3 dribble pull up) due to the way game is played

It's definitely hard to have MJ as your GOAT if he was before your time. But imagine if LeBron won 3 consecutive NBA championships... retired and played football, then came back and won 3 consecutive NBA championships. That's pretty much what Jordan did when he retired and played baseball. And during his 2nd 3-peat, Jordan played all 82 games and he played every single playoff game in that 3 year span. It was insane. Every single game he played with an intensity that we've only seen from Kobe, but MJ was way more athletic. No one was mad when when he first retired, and many schools paused their classes so kids could watch the announcement. People were crying in the streets... and it was like Superman died. It's hard to explain how impactful Jordan was -- there's nothing today that comes close. And I'm not even from the US. My cousins in the states said it was a national event. Even LeBron says he cried when Jordan retired. Today, there's a lot of debating, but by the time Jordan won his 2nd championship, he was pretty much considered the undisputed GOAT in most people's eyes. From the start using the eye test, everyone knew Jordan was the GOAT, they were just waiting for him to win a few rings. And it's his gameplay that captured the globe. It's what made Nike great, and his shoes became great because of his gameplay, not the other way around - trust me. And the reason why the game looks slower back then is because the rules were very different, and yes less focus on the 3ball. But take your favorite player from today and take away the gather step, the zero step, no euro steps allowed, add hand-checking, flagrant fouls were just normal fouls, you had to dribble on top of the ball. Most plays today would be called for traveling or carrying. It's very very different. Adding the old rules would limit everything that they're doing today on the court right now. Thanks again for the reaction, and sorry for this longwinded comment. If you want a better highlight MJ mixtape that often gets a lot of views, you should check out his ultimate Bulls mixtape or his Voyager Rare mixtape (you'll see the type of fouls MJ had to endure) Ultimate: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYbSaaahfNufY7M Voyager Rare: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn6aqnWgqd2Sf8U

Not only because of statistics, NOT only because of leadership, Jordan did everything he did in 11 seasons with the bulls, 2 seasons injured and the 2 seasons with the Wizzard were only to help the team and even then they couldn't stop him at 40 years old, not to mention that 2 Retired years that if it didn't happen easily, he would win 8 titles in a row, Lebron only accumulates numbers and even then he can't even overshadow him, you are right about something, you DON'T see him play, we have seen them all.

I do agree that today’s players are more skilled than in Jordan’s era but the players in Jordan’s era were bigger and stronger. The defense was so tough during that time that you had to earn those points in the paint. Jordan was dunking on centers like Ewing, Mourning, young athletic Shaq, David Robertson, and Karl Malone. Jordan was posterizing all of them. Today’s ideal center is someone like Wemby. Imagine Jordan driving to the lane with today’s defense. Another thing is when Jordan was playing, there was no debate on who the GOAT was. Everyone today is trying to get in that debate where Jordan is cemented.

Have to disagree with you. The game was by far more skilled than today. Athleticism is higher today, no doubt, but only because back then you could double a player because there was no 3 second call and you could hip check a guy. You change the rules to what they were back then quite a few stars would be out of the nba. But then players were far more skilled. It’s not close. And again players are more athletic today overall. The rules have changed things. Like in football, qbs today wouldn’t last a season if the rules were switched back overnight. Rules are built to ordinary offensive players look great

Nah the players today are far more comfortable and get into a rhythm. This is because the refs don’t allow for a more physical game. And MJ wasn’t ahead of his time either. Some of the things he did were done by players before him…they just weren’t as complete as him. Larry Bird, Dr. Jay, Magic, and others. Some of the fancy things you see now, weren’t invented today.

There is nothing that supports Lebron's goat case except longevity (total stats belong to longevity, for actual comparison, you need to apply per game stats). And that's no hyperbole. Cats at the playgrounds or rec centers are terrible defensively. Back in 80s and 90s there was a lot more duress defensively. You had to work to get buckets. Now I'm in my mid-50s and I can get buckets easier than back then. These youngsters play defense with zero tenacity.

There is a misconception about basketball that today's players are better mostly because of the excess dribbling, we had that And 1 street ball crap but that wasn't NBA ball until it got on tv & became popular... Only real upgrade is the 3 ball being so prevalent but with a loss of the post up game

Everyone has their goat and that's ok. The problem is that Lebron fans, and Lebron fans only, like to tear down and talk shit about players that came before him to make the case for him being the goat. No other fans of any other player or players themselves have disrespected former players the way that's it's happening today. To be a fan of the game means u have to respect players of the past and what they've done to pave the way for this new generation. I respect that you have Lebron as your goat but can still show respect and love towards Jordan and other greats

The only player with skills today is Irving and his lay ups remind me of MJ but to say that the players are better today ..... Before the rules favored defensive play and were more physical and permissive on contacts There was hand-checking which forced players to play with their backs to the basket to protect their ball Today with spacing, almost non-existent defense players can dribble facing their opponent and knitting with the ball, Before the game was focused in the paint, attacking the rim or taking a shot was much less easy and the three-point shot was an option, not a triviality, on the other hand I recognize that today's players are more skillful at shooting .

People like to say Jordan didn't play against tough opponents. They don't understand that MJ had tough competition especially in the eastern conference. Jordan was just that much better. It's the same with Bird and Magic. They faced competition but they were so much better and they made good players look bad.

Younger fans love down playing the "skills" of players from the past. The weird thing is you really only ever see it from NBA fans and NBA players. NFL fans/players rarely do it. NHL, MLB, Soccer, Boxing etc. almost never do this its an basketball thing. When fans say "skills" do you mean being able to do more things? Like a Swiss Army knife? Well then you'll know that a Swiss Army knife can do a lot of things, but it ain't that good any any one thing. Let's bring up "skill" again, who in the NBA has better post moves than Hakeem? Who in the NBA has better post moves than MJ? The answer, maybe Jokic comes close to measuring up. Who in the NBA today has better handles than Iverson... IF they couldn't carry the ball and travel? I would say very few. I think the "SKILL" that a lot of modern NBA fans are talking about is only one skill... that's being able to shoot the 3 pointer. That is the barometer for "skilled" these days. Someone who can shoot 3s. Almost no one in the NBA today has any mid-range game, why is that? Is that not a skill that is dead and gone from today NBA? What did they replace it with, the 3 pointer? That's where the "more skilled" argument comes from. Cause today they see players who used to not shoot 3s... but on the flip side, we see players today who should be making a living shooting middies and serving post up moves not doing that. Y'all have neglected two major parts of the game of basketball to hard focus on another part of the game. I DO think that today's player's posses more "skills" than most of the past players, but that doesn't mean they are better. It's a different game, so the focus has changed. It's different now, that's all.

Today people use the term GOAT synonymously with who is their favorite player. These are NOT the same things and should not be used interchangeably. Everyone knows Gretsky is the GOAT of hockey. But only people who were alive at the time would have been able to watch him play. Everyone has their favorite player. But there is only ONE greatest of ALL TIME in each sport. So is Michael Phelps not the GOAT swimmer because Gen Alphas didn't see him compete and win all those gold medals? That doesn't make sense.

not trying to be unkind, but to say the competition is better today is so untrue, it's hard to even know where to start. Today's NBA is the weakest it's been since the 1970's and the 80's/90's was the NBA's Golden Era in terms of talent. It's not even close. I've been an NBA fan since the mid 1970's and coached youth basketball for years. I am Michael Jordan’s age and have seen all of the greats from the 1970’s to today. 2 of my 3 sons played competitive basketball through high school here in North Carolina. My middle son even attended camps with Stephon Curry that his dad, Dell Curry, sponsored here in the Charlotte area. My personal top 3 are: 1. Michael Jordan, 2. Larry Bird, 3. Magic Johnson. After the top 3, it’s more debatable to me. I’ve seen everyone over the last 45+ years. IMO, these players had the best BALANCE of FG%, FT%, clutch play, great offense, great defense, makes teammates better, great team play, shares the ball, passing ability, finishing, coachable, high basketball IQ, finds a way to win, has all areas of the basic fundamentals down pat, seeks high % shots FIRST, knows where teammates are on the court at all times, able to score while being fouled, played against tougher competition, played against great defenses. No one today has ALL of these attributes. These 3 are the only players ever to not have any holes in their games at all. Not even Lebron can match this. Larry #1 in basketball IQ, then Jordan. Winning in the clutch, Bird and Jordan are a tie. Best top to bottom defender, Sydney Moncref. Lebron flops, gives up on defense (a huge negative), and has choked in too many key games. He couldn’t even get the Lakers to the playoffs in 2022, which was one of the weakest NBA seasons ever. All of these negatives are glaring and bring down his value. To me, only Michael, Larry, and Magic had ALL of these attributes and are (by far) the most clutch and best players of all time. Consistently winning the close games is what separates icon players from everyone else. No players after my top 3 come close to doing it at the level they did. Though today's players have a lot of talent, most players lack most of these attributes and no one has all of them. Defense and team play are almost nonexistent today compared to the 80’s/90’s. Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson (by far) are the most clutch players of all time, did it against the best defenses of all time, and did it during the most talent rich era of all time (80’s/90’s). Jordan had 2 threepeats and 6 championships in 8 years, again, during the Golden Era. There is more athleticism today overall, but the overall talent level was much better then, trust me. I will take fundamentals/teamwork over athleticism any day. That will be what wins the most games. Today’s game is extremely sloppy and there’s very little defense. I’ve seen every era from the 1970’s until today. There were incredible athletes as well then too. Dr. J, Isaha Thomas, Dominique Wilkins, and Sydney Moncteif to name a few. Because of the addiction to three pointers, lack of teamwork, and lack of defense the game of basketball is not nearly as exciting and interesting. It seems that many young people who do not understand the fundamental attributes of the game and haven’t seen players pre -2000 play night in and night out are the ones who claim that Lebron is the best. Older people who have seen decades of the best players and can see Lebron's weaknesses. This past season proved why Lebron is not only not the GOAT, he’s not even top 5. Still, not a bad video overall.

Jordan was already considered the GOAT when he retired after the first 3-peat. The second one was just cherry on top. MJ got 10 scoring titles which is a record and 9 first team all-defense which is also a record. He accomplished that in only 11 full seasons with the Bulls. Lebron got 1 scoring title and he's a lousy, unreliable defender who chokes under pressure with an abysmal 20 percent in clutch situations lmao. There is no universe in which an overrated, opportunistic, roided-up stat-padding crybaby is anywhere close to MJ. Or Kobe for that matter...
