The crazy part of the Manning play was that it probably wouldn't have worked on anyone BUT Manning. Manning was a disciple of the film room and Ed said that for like 2-3 weeks, he did that same move to the middle because he knew he was playing Manning soon. Manning had that move almost ingrained in his mind so when Ed did the flip around, Peyton was completely caught off guard. Literal chess match going on for weeks just for this one interception.

I think its more reading the pump fake move of manning. He said Manning would throw in the direction he pumps, especially if he sees the safety go in the opposite direction. So when manning pumps that way, reed fakes that he is going in the opposite direction. He also makes it look as if his eyes are not on manning, but he still can see manning in his periphery. Then as SOON as he sees manning wind up he knows where he is going and turns around and books it to that spot. Either way its amazing next level athleticism smarts and talent. But I think he could actually see manning making the throw out of the corner of his eye

Plus, he also once scored by way of hand-off - following an interception - from fellow DB teammate, CB Samari Rolle. Thus, he did NOT score a total of ten times, as was proclaimed by Brian Baldinger during this film breakdown! Additionally, the aforementioned fumbles were forced by Ed himself, and he also accounted for all 3 of his own block𝙀𝙙 punt return touchdowns! What a special individual, both on and off the field!

“He covered Roy Williams on that play WITHOUT LOOKING at Roy Williams.” Also, I love how he was focused on gaining territory after every interception. It wasn’t enough for him to pick it off. He had to get yards and help out the offense as well. And he was phenomenal at that.

If you find the original video of belichick breaking that play down he talks about how earlier in the year Reed played that defense a certain way to make sure it was on film to bait Peyton into that throw

For that interception against the dolphins in the red zone. The Ravens where playing cover 2, but, like Baldy said, Ed had studied the dolphins so much he knew where Chad Pennington was going to go on that play. Ed Reed said, during his film study, based on that formation and down and distance, that Chad Pennington threw the ball to that receiver 100 percent of the time. So when he saw that formation on that down and distance in the game, he trusted his film study and Chad Pennington's tendencies, and abandoned his cover 2 responsibilities ( without communicating to the corner what he was doing) and jumped that route, coming from across the field. Outside of the legendary pick on Peyton Manning, that to me, is his most impressive defensive play of his career, because it was in the playoffs and they where basically on the goal line. I was watching that game live and saw the play when it happened. But as with all all time great players, as impressive as a play is in real time, once you get the broader context on what went into making the play happen, you realize it wasn't just another Ed Reed interception. That play was the result of a once in a generation player making a play that only once in a generation players can make.
