As I wrote earlier here on KZbin, Dissection is the perfect combination of black and classical music. Not playing emphatically classical moves and licks with distortion, as they do in symphonic metal, but rather the thoughtful introduction of classical elements, while preserving the structure and idea of black metal. The ideal melodic black or, in principle, melodic metal.

Dude, it's incredible! I've been weeping to some of these and know exactly what you're feeling. I'm 35 now and 2004 for me. It encapsulates an era for me thats incredibly nostalgic. This stuff used to be hard to find back then too. Wild times!

Translating this to piano only really shows the classical influences of Black Metal. Beautifully done.
@d_rivadeneyra2 ай бұрын
Just because something can be played on piano doesn't mean it is classically influenced. I see about zero classical elements in it.
@chrisstone-streetlightinte56292 ай бұрын
@d_rivadeneyra That's an interesting observation. Care to share your reasoning behind this?
@d_rivadeneyra2 ай бұрын
@@chrisstone-streetlightinte5629 For sure. Every music genre has their own defining characteristics, their own language. In classical music, the main two defining features are form and counterpoint. From counterpoint comes all the tradition in classical harmony. This song does not use any sort of classical form. A good example of classical form used in modern rock could be "Playing God" by Polyphia, utilizing a binary form. Harmonically is also not inspired by classical music, this song uses a lot of parallel fifths (which are generally a big no in classical music), it also uses mediants with the same chord quality, in this case two minor chords one third apart, which is something not common at all in classical music, I'm sure you can find an example of it, but it is not the standard. It's a meme and all, but the standard in classical music is traditional functional harmony (I-V). I'm not saying metal cannot be intluenced by classical music, I know a lot of metal music is, I am a classical musician and I also personally like metal. I just think this piece in particular doesn't have any classical elements to it.
@chrisstone-streetlightinte56292 ай бұрын
@d_rivadeneyra I suppose you have a point on the parallel fifths, as they are all over this song. I flew a bit loose with the term and often consider medieval influenced music, which does contain frequent use of parallel fifths, as classical when it's actually not.
@cronostrigger6401Ай бұрын
you can translate any song into piano, it doesn't mean it has classical influences. but this a great song though. it's a piece of our time, so for sure it will influence many musicians for many decades. maybe it's classical piece of our time

Today, a month ago one of the dearest longtime friends of mine decided to leave this reality. Dissection's song 'Where dead angels lie' is the last song I shared with him and since then, this song, which is very beautiful on its own, got stuck in my mind and heart. Somehow the lyrics of this song sadly fit well with my friend's departure. He was an angel. He was such a splendid, profoundly kind, humble, yet very educated person; a real honest and loyal soul. Thank you so much for this beautiful piano interpretation of it ❤ I have watched all your videos and they're all so touching and passionated. Greetings from the Italian high Alps. May my dear friend Nadir rest in peace now.
@erikmartens4194Ай бұрын
Take care, I hope your friend has found his personal peace. If anything, music like Dissection and covers like this can help people stay on this side. But yet, sometimes the abyss is too nearby. To put it in Jon's words: beyond the event horizon lies the void of my dreams.
@igormix2510Ай бұрын
Thank you for your words Erik. I can tell you this, anyone who's been lucky enough to meaningfully cross paths with him and to be capable of understanding his immense value will most certainly keep a place of honour in their hearts for him. I have the feeling that the abyss had been beneath his feet for a long time, so long, that apparently, nobody seems to have even known about such deep suffering. Now, I don't want to become verbose about this. Let's remind people who we love, that we love them, because we truly never know how suddenly they might disappear. Dear Pianist Lady, I'm sorry I don't actually know your name, I think it would be lovely to see you cover maybe a Gojira, a Children of Bodom, a Dimmu Borgir or even a Tool song. Have a good one y'all ❤️🩹🤘

Szóval, kellett azért a megfelelő ihletforrás is... :)

@Mp57navy5 жыл бұрын
@@matternicuss Urgh, newer Enslaved is pretty garbage tho. The best Enslaved record is "Vikingligr Veldi" from 1994. If you want a piano, the track "Norvegr" has it, on that record. Edit: if your GF wants metal, here's a run down of my wife's favorites: Theater of Tragedy - Velvet Darknes They Fear, Epica - The Phantom Agony, Trees of Eternity - Hour Of the Nightingale. Now, actual good BM/DM, that does not sound like a garbage can is hard to come by. Mgla, 1914, Sinmara, and Deathspell Omega come to mind. It's not for the uninitiated, IMO.

There is something about the opening phrases of this piano cover that really strike a chord with me. A visceral response that puts me on the verge of wanting to cry. It's as if the music is foreboding of some impending tragic event. It's really quite intense. It's not something I get from the original song played on guitar.
