I think it's a bit disingenuous to describe the protests against cop city as "environmentalist." It was never about that. The protests didn't really take off until the summer of 2020 and the protests around George Floyd. Anyone around Atlanta at the time knows that the people protesting cop city only talked about the forest and environmental concerns with media or when they were arrested. That's not the reason why people were pissed about cop city.

I got arrested in 2012 under the Suspect for terrorism act "The Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005" I took a photo of a police car licence plate and the officer's badge number writing a ticket because they had fined another person for peeing in public without them actually peeing. They pulled up and ticketed him. Crazy right? but it happened and the proof he didn't was the ground wasn't wet anywhere. sirens went and he was searched and then fined. I took photos of everything including the area totally dry and promised to send them to the person who would dispute the fine. The guard (police officer) didn't like me documenting it and arrested me for literally taking photos of them under the suspect to terrorism act. After 18 hours, I was released on one condition, I gave them my password so they could delete all the photos (proving they literally fined an innocent person) and they would not pursue my charge further. I said yes because staying in a cell until a solicitor got me out was not worth protecting another defence of not actually doing anything but getting fined anyway. This terrorism umbrella has given police an excuse to literally arrest anyone who tries to ask why what they are doing and whether it's right.

Genuine question: If the gov't uses force (tear gas, rubber bullets, worse) to disperse a group of protestors legally carrying firearms, and they use those guns to defend themselves... ? The gov't frequently uses those things against protestors who do not have firearms (some of whom may well have engaged in violent destruction of property, but are not an ideologically unified armed militia)-I'm not taking sides at all. At what point is self defense justified in a protest situation? And what happens when those protestors have legal guns and the right to use them to protect themselves? Or does that situation fall outside of the right to defend yourself? -if that is indeed the case, why is okay to carry firearms when using them is illegal? Or am I missing something?

Justified and "legally protected" are very different when it comes to government forces. You don't really have any self defense rights against cops or government personnel. Even if the cops are 1000% abusing their power and beating you to a pulp you're still considered out of line to lift your hand to them. The only real exception is if you didn't reasonably have a way to know it was police. Like that dude in TX (I think?) who got flashbanged in a no-knock raid and shot some cops then was acquitted because they didn't announce themselves and had basically deafened and stunned him so he was unable to discern they were police and not robbers. Its messed up but the last thing they want is to give citizens the idea they can stand up to the government.

At least 40x XR blocked the highway, leading to traffic jams and unsafe situations without any consequences. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam closes because of a thread issued by XR. Do note, that by law protestors can protest and there are facilities designed to give them a place to protest without any large consequences to society.
