Fun fact, when Germany invaded Denmark in 1940, George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck to prevent the Nazis from taking them. He just left it in a bottle on a shelf hoping it would remain undisturbed, and then after the war, he got the gold out of the acid, and the Nobel Society recast Franck and von Laue's awards from the original gold.

As an additional fun fact, the traditional and common name for the mix of Hydrochloric and Nitric acid used to turn the gold into Chloroauric acid is referred to as ‘aqua regia’, or literally ‘royal water’. Aqua regia can also react with other precious metals such as silver and platinum, but curiously, silver doesn’t dissolve as well as the other metals, in part because it forms a protective layer of silver chloride during the reaction which blocks more of the aqua regia from reaching the metal underneath.
@luiseduardolima12233 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I heard about the aqua regia (here we call of água régia) and the interaction with the gold. But with the silver I've never expecting it. Could this reaction, which occurred in the aqua regia + nitric acid, have some kind of anti-corrosive mechanism such as passivation?

Pff we were taught that in 9th grade 😏

However silver can also be dissolved in other acids, including plain HCl(aq) (hydrochloric acid) as silver oxidizes rather easy, gold on the other had needs an oxidizing acid such as nitric acid added.

We learned in school chemistry hydrochloric acid + nitric acid mixture is called "Aqua Regia" because it can dissolve gold, the king of metals. Neither hydrochloric acid nor nitric acid alone can do it and gold's specialty is not getting oxidized or forming compounds due to weathering and remaining in shining pure element form. Thanks NileRed for videographing something which we could only read about in books. Modern generation has much more fun learning, I suppose.

If you look close at 1:20 a metal cube (tungsten?) just happens to be in his path to trip over, so it is pretty clearly a set up. Having had the experience of needing to recover very expensive (way more than this gold bar is worth) synthesis products from unfortunate accidents (flasks bursting in glove-box ante-chambers, dropped into rotary-evaporator baths, powder launching out of blenders, etc.) I can't believe he would set himself up for that level of hassle. Also, remember that this solution was mostly concentrated hydrochloric acid, which fumes in air and eats concrete pretty quick. I don't see any sign of either expected effect in the spilled fluid, so it is not his chloroauric acid solution.

I know for Hydrochloric acid, you can just add a bit of universal indicator and slowly add baking soda to neutralize. Once it turns green via the indicator, the pH is now neutral, and the resulting mixture is just dissolved table salt, which can just go down the drain. I believe a similar process can probably be followed for the Nitric acid. The resulting mixture for that neutralization would be Sodium Nitrate, which I believe might be safe to pour down the drain as well (a quick web search and skimming the MSDS didn't show any special disposal methods).

Chloroauric acid is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H[AuCl4]. It forms hydrates H[AuCl4]·nH2O. Both the trihydrate and tetrahydrate are known. Both are orange-yellow solids consisting of the planar [AuCl4]− anion. Often chloroauric acid is handled as a solution, such as those obtained by dissolution of gold in aqua regia. These solutions can be converted to other gold complexes or reduced to metallic gold or gold nanoparticles. Chloroauric acid is produced by dissolving gold in aqua regia (a mixture of concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acids) followed by careful evaporation of the solution: Au(s) + HNO3(aq) + 4 HCl(aq) → H[AuCl4](aq) + NO(g) + 2 H2O(l) - Wikipedia
