What a cool idea man and cool that they are happy for you to do so. Sort of suprised they aren't doing something similar themselves and doing a neutral style vodka off shoot to their company sell it cheap for that extra little income from their "waste products" Up cycle that's our NZ green way of life isn't it lol.

Absolutely a HUGE fan of this approach. I've been racking my brains on how to secure my own "waste steam" for several years. Hard to get a good response when putting feelers out, as a lot goes to stock feed for a profit, and saying its for distillation is a big no no

Thought this was going to be about distilling feints (making product from waste) didn’t expect waste stream from beer - nice. Great business idea if you can make decent product from waste, means raw materials are low cost. Good to find more uses for distillation waste (wash waste after stripping run), when still hot this is good weed killer!

I have been waiting for this one, and strangely it shows up right when I started plowing through something like 400 bottles of old beer. Home"beer"brewers most likely have a ton of beer that just didn´t make it, and it should not go down the drain. Finding a way to use it is worth while.

Quick question... i've been researching this and nothing is totally clear on the matter: The real difference between whiskey and vodka? some say its about malt, others the aging in oak or even the types of grains used (or that whiskey uses grain while vodka dont which is clearly not true), still some say its about vodka being stilled to nearly pure. Most of these answers seem to overlap with each other somewhere along the line. My best guess is that vodka is neutral whereas whiskey generally has flavor. What is your take on it?
@denisdendrinos4538
@denisdendrinos4538 2 жыл бұрын
Vodka is most commonly made from grains now days - technically speaking it has to come off the still at..... 96% if I remember correctly? So it's whisky coming off at 96%, so as neutral as neutral can be and then diluted to the commercial 43%. But there's a decent number of Vodka's that still present with a hint of the original grains.

How do you feel about hops in gin? Maybe you could make a g(j)enever and use the hops as part of the botanicals. From what I understand genevers are made with a more flavorful base spirit than gin. That might fit the beer you stated with.

Very cool 😎😎😎 I cannot wait till the distillery take over !! Got the pro level tickets for me and the wife ! You know the Corsair Distillery in Tennessee made a hop forward whisky ,, and I mean WAYYYY hop forward. IF you enjoy IPA’s AND whisky (I do) it is amazing ! Especially on a very Hot day ,, over ice 😍😍sadly they don’t make it anymore 😢, but it was a flavor BOMB !!! Perhaps you should go ALL IN with the hops on a batch 🧐

Shopping names for that whisky: "Growth Industry: whisky distilled from yeast growth media," or in bold letters: "ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE" What a magnificent idea! Are the yeast wranglers thinking of setting up a distillery? Anything that prevents waste or turns a waste stream into a valuable product is very very cool. I'd love to try these, especially the RudeBoy strain.

I'm curious if their yeast food needs to be hopped... If they were using un hopped LME to grow thir yeast in, I don't see an issue. I do malt extract all the time, tasts good (with some age), really easy. It will be interesting to see how those hop flavors develop. I have some friends that sometimes have waste beer. Not good enough to drink as beer, spoilage and what not... Looking forward to a follow up video. Wish I could go to the distillery takeover, probably learn a lot of new useful stuff... I can't get it together that quick, Texas is pretty far for me... looked in to it, about $2000 for me to fly, rent car, get tickets, spend day and night in hotel, fly back. Wife straight up said no way... lol. Maybe next time, if announced earlier I can talk her in to a Texas vacation... with a little distillery visit fit in there...

Hop and grass flavours would remind me a little more of Grappa? I am sure you can balance it out on sweetness, bourbon barrel and some clean oak. Looking forward to the updates. I don't know anything about the actual supply chain they established, but in Kansas City, our flagship hometown brewers and distillers have collaborated in the past on distilling essentially failed experiments. They called it Second Life or something. I got one of their expressions, a failed saison or something, and it made for an interesting spirit. not the most delicious-probably not worth what I paid for it-but I love that kind of ingenuity.

Aww, that's cheating! I thought you were going to make a mash out of kitchen scraps or something. It's interesting that the esters did come through to the end product though. I know almost nothing about distilling alcohol as here in Australia it's illegal you know. 😉😉 I don't own the equipment but just wondering what you do with the foreshots and unused heads and tails. I know some add it to the next mash to redistill but I was actually wondering if it might be used for cleaning etc. in the same way IPA can be. Cheers!

I guess that is one more use for the left over yeast/mash product that is either thrown away in most breweries or turned into marmite or vegamite in the UK or British colonies. Interesting concept making three batches of whiskeys with each of the different beer pot liquors that most consider trash. If beer breweries in America were to make a product from the left over yeast/ mash they would have to make something different than straight marmite/ vegamite like product, because it would not sale that well here. However if you made a compound butter with herbs, black pepper/sichuan pepper corn or a marinade. I think it would do pretty well, because I have experimented with both marmite and vegamite. I think it taste great in beef stew, marinade chicken with apple vinegar, marmite/ vegamite, Sichuan pepper corn and sumac. Bake it and have your mind blown. I've made baked chips by marinating potato wedges in white vinegar, vegamite and black pepper.

Would adding some more water and sugars and refermenting lessen some of the hop? Juice them and make a wine? I've got a mulberry wine sitting on french oak since march. Juice them, they should have some decent sugar to get you around 10- 13% alcohol. Add a nice red wine yeast (not ec-111) and let it ferment. Once dry, let it cold crash a bit, then siphon off into a secondary. Once that's sat for like a month, siphon again and add in your wood.

Just wanted to say thanks. I got a t500 when you started to build your first still. I use to do an aggressive turbo yeast sugar wash and carbon filter it. Also didn’t focus much on making cuts. Then I watched the birdwatcher video. I followed the recipe, made cuts and didn’t filter. Finished at 50%. My 7 and 9 year old boys renamed the wash ‘ spider blood’ due to the colour. It tastes great just on its own, also have some ageing in oak
