LECTURE 12:
Here the Distortion Energy (DE) static failure criterion is developed and compared with the maximum shearing stress criterion. Concepts of hydrostatic and distortion strain are explored and explained. The elliptical failure locus associated with the DE criterion is shown and the DE estimation of yielding strength in shear is developed. An example is presented that demonstrates the process of using MSS and DE theories to find factors of safety for a part that experiences multiaxial plane stress at its critical point resulting from a single applied load. The load line associated with this applied load is plotted and the relationship between the applied load and the length of the load line is explored. The geometry the load line and the failure loci are related to the factors of safety for this example.

Thank you for the video! I have a question on the Strain Energy Density in the beginning of the video. I couldn't figure out how the equation is derived. Base on what I could find in text books, all those equation only consider a single stress component. I am curious on how this equation in your video is derived that contains sigma1 , 2, and 3?

I can't thank you enough for this video. my question is how you draw the load line in the 4th quadrant
@TheBomPE
@TheBomPE 3 жыл бұрын
In quadrant IV one in-plane principal stress is positive and one is negative. You just plot your two stresses and they make a load line. I'm not sure I understand what is giving you trouble?

This is a course for 3rd-year mechanical engineering students. If you have enough stamina, you might start by learning the "engineering mechanics" and "mechaincs of materials" content I present in this series of playlists: Freshman Level: kzbin.info/aero/PL1IHA35xY5H52IKu6TVfFW-BDqAt_aZyg Sophomore Level: kzbin.info/aero/PL1IHA35xY5H5sjfjibqn_XFFxk3-pFiaX Junior Level (where this video resides): kzbin.info/aero/PL1IHA35xY5H5AJpRrM2lkF7Qu2WnbQLvS Senior Level (in case you want to see where it leads after this): kzbin.info/aero/PL1IHA35xY5H5KqySx6n09jaJLUukbvJvB And of course all of it is built on the presumption that your algebra and calculus skills are good. Thanks for watching!

So, people say that Tresca is easier than von Mises because it's easier to find the principal stresses in plane stress, but with 29:00 equations there's no need to even find the principal stresses, am I right?
@TheBomPE
@TheBomPE 4 жыл бұрын
That is right, you can directly find the von-Mises stress without having to find principal stresses first. I have always found distortion energy to be more convenient because it does not have discontinuities. Thanks for watching!

The 4500 nm is the moment not the torques. why are you saying these are torques?
@TheBomPE
@TheBomPE 3 жыл бұрын
"Torque" is a term usually used by engineers to designate a moment applied around the long axis of a member. Both terms are valid for the 4500Nm influence. It is a torque around the BCD axis caused by the moment from lever DE.
