Good points. I do come across artists whose caricatures look like they took a liquify tool from photoshop stretched or pinched things around and then drew that. It always kinda bothered me, even though they were skillfully rendered, they were missing the charm that traditionally 'solving the face' gives.

I didn't imagine it would be this interesting to watch a critique video. But it kinda makes sense even not being the one who has drawn that caricature. I think the student drawing looks cute though.

hello, very good. i have a question, this caricature is for a person who has a very distinc features, like hair and nose, i think this have a impact on drawing caricature, i think is more easy, and what about drawing a cariture from a person has a face all proportions right. u know, like your face, i think is more dificult.

That's a good point. However, the main goal in this demo was simply to show how to improve the likeness and make better exaggeration choices. The way I teach caricatures is to break down the process into smaller, more manageable problems where you focus on one main goal at each step. So I think it's good to show the roughness and real decisions I make along the way. It allows me to show students how to make corrections to their own work. The details of the anatomy and alignment of the features will be resolved in the next stage of The Abstraction.

Hello my name is Carlos Trujillo I am from Ecuador and english is my second language. Let me tell you, , I cosider you are GREAT! Congratulations by all ur works and precious drawings. I am an architect and i like to draw too. I make water color, charcol and oil ; principality. I consider my self as a good drawing i like to make portraits and i think i am good doing them , BUT since many yeras ago I had been trying to make caricatures but I couldnt. Untill i found ur precious lessons. I want to ask some things: are there faces which are really really difficult to make a good caricatures? and second question is: if i am 54 years old, dou think I am going to be good enought. I woudl liked to show u some of my drawings too. Thanks by u reading this and congratulations AGAIN. Carlos

Hi Carlos. Sorry for the wait. I don't check the comments too often. To answer your question, yes, there are many faces that are difficult for me to caricature. If they are more pretty and closer to the average, I find it more difficult to make them exaggerated and funny. I created a lesson on sketching difficult faces where the main suggestion was to compare the difficult face with the face of another celebrity who shows opposite characteristics - someone who is easier for you to caricature. And then do caricatures of both people next to each other. Using a second person as a basis to judge your caricature decisions can be really helpful in figuring out what to exaggerate on the difficult face.

Oh, also and no matter your age, you can learn anything, I think. As long as you pursue it with a passion and discipline (and have some good instruction!).

one thing the submission of the Big Bang Theory guy had right was that it made him look younger rather than older, which is more in keeping with the character. this professional whos never seen the show has made him look older which really hurts the association between his caricature and the actual character.

I have a question though, the guy clearly does not have a long slim face, it is rather short and wide, so why would you draw his face as long and slim? That's like the opposite. That doesn't make any sense to me if the purpose of the caricature is to exaggerate the features.
@Darknight0681

A longer face is most definitely one of several solutions he could’ve went for that’s valid. I think the likeness is spot on even in this first phase.

It absolutely does NOT look more like the person. And as he said, his critique sketch is a first pass, meaning the point was to just get the idea and likeness in place, then refine stuff like nostril movement because of the smile. His is actually a caricature you could really use in editorial work, nobody’s gonna even remotely consider the first in that regard.

Great but to me no two artist will draw features the same with caricature there is no rule really
@ProkoTV
@ProkoTV 8 ай бұрын
Absolutely! The only thing truly close to a rule we have in caricature is to maintain the readability of the likeness. The same artist can do hundreds of caricatures of the same face and they'll be different every time. We just have to know who they are for it be a strong caricature, as Court discusses in this video.

He could've popped the lower lip out and rendered it more, but I think Court's is better because it makes more sense. When you have a crooked smile like that, it doesn't make sense to have both cheeks pushed up equal amounts, as the original sketch had it.
@Darknight0681
@Darknight0681 Жыл бұрын
That’s the kind of decision you have to make when you decide to push the likeness a certain way. For every reaction is an equal and opposite reaction.

I liked the student's better. He exaggerated the cheeks and the nose perfectly: however, the hair is better on your version.
@Darknight0681
@Darknight0681 Жыл бұрын
Nope, those cheeks are rookie error distortion and it would’ve never flew past any sort of real scrutiny. It’s a good attempt starting off, but there’s a LOT they could pick up from Court’s rendition, regardless of whether you agree with the choices or not.
