Another note: while not being from one district, the covey display a fierce sense of loyalty with their family, which is a very culturally Appalachian ideal to hold. It always comes with a catch though, like “we are loyal to you until the end. unless you get too big for your britches and start thinking you’re better than us” you can see this in the way they treat Billy Taupe. He started getting too big for his britches and they dropped him.
@marieroberts56643 ай бұрын
Not just too big for his britches, tho. He actively betrayed the whole Covey by becoming a lackey for the Mayor's daughter. So because he could no longer be trusted, he was cut off from the rest, including (in the book) his actual blood relative, his brother.

@meccalovett4616Ай бұрын
@@lizanne373 it’s not the slang that’s the problem. It’s that it was used incorrectly. It’s a misuse of AAVE. I was pointing out how weird it sounded. Hence the subtext of “We in the clurb, we all fam”. It sounds cringe. “Finna” and “gonna” are never used together.

This just reminded me how much I’d love to see Susanne Collin’s read JD Vance to filth on behalf of Appalachia. Cause dang she was so much more respectful to the culture in a work of dystopian than he was in a book about his own family.

Love how Lucy Gray had what I consider the perfect winner. Yes snow cheated so the snakes wouldn’t kill her and she was erased from history but if you look at the way Lucy gray won the games it was by entertaining the capital viewers by singing and putting on a performance it forever changing how the games to a performance to entertain like a tv show or musical, not a battle to the death but a popularity contest

I’m also wondering if Katniss’s father was forced due to societal pressure in one form or another to change his surname connoting his Covey ancestry slightly- Evergreen to Everdeen? Just a thought 🤷🏻♀️
@NeyamRye3 ай бұрын
Probably
@bye15512 ай бұрын
It would make sense! I know the original justification was that the everdeen family were scavengers, but it's an easily applicable reason retroactively.

Tbh I would still understand and wait (albeit excrutiating long) for this series to continue since I expect that we will receive new information about the districts in the upcoming novel next year. For a minute I thought you put it onhold the whole series for that very reason tho love these analysis so much!

I love this video, I specifically always viewed the Covey as being Irish Traveller, due to the strong Irish heritage that runs through the Appalachia, (I go to school in and don’t live far from the Appalachia), I love these books and always will

As a Romani from the Appalachian area I love the positive representation for us in this. We really only have the Disney Hunchback and the Golden Compass besides this, loved having something else to show my daughter. When I was growing up all I had was Hunchback.

Hello lucky! I love the video. So I’m going to leave a nice long comment to boost your video for the KZbin algorithm gods! I know it’s hard as a content creator to get the videos you worked so hard on to get going with the algorithm. So hopefully this comment gets it on its way. I used to leave really short comments just saying “hi” or “

Love this analysis. I have also heard that many believe that both Katness and her father were part Indigenous American (dark straight hair and olive complexion) but I don't think it has been given Word of God, either yea or nay.

Thank you for your in-depth analysis, as usual. I appreciate the fact that you called out double-names. I have a double-name and i can never get over people shortening it not just to the first part, but a nickname of it. My name is Kristina-Rae, not Kristina, not Tina, not even Tina-Rae. Being able to use my double-name is a privilege that literally only my family has. The culture there is.... hard to explain, but you did fantastically, as always

They are so important. Would Lucy gray's songs Katniss sings have as much power if they were no preceeded by a legacy of travellers who passed their music to all the districts? Its like all the districts remember the music even if they never heard that song before, they know what it represents.

Great video! I would just like to point out however that the 500 000 number for Roma victims of the Holocaust is considered to be outdated by Romani historians like Ian Hancock. Many historians nowadays estimate the number to be in the millions.

Alright, lemme see if I can do this off the top of my head: Are you, are you, coming to the tree Where they strung up a man they say who murdered three? Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be If we met at midnight in the hanging tree. Are you, are you, coming to the tree, Where I told you to run so we'd both be free? Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be If we met at midnight in the hanging tree. Are you, are you, coming to the tree Where the dead man called out for his love to flee? Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be If we met at midnight in thew hanging tree. Are you, are you, coming to the tree? Wear a necklace of rope side by side with me. Strange things did happen here, no stranger would it be If we met at midnight in the hanging tree. Oooooooooooooookay, I know I got all the verses, but is that in the right order?

I know a fair amount of people with double names and yeah it would be weird (and disrespectful) to refer to them only as one. Like no one would call Mary Kate Olsen just Mary, so don’t do it to the people around you.
