For many of us, the main reason we choose to run Linux is because of "freedom." But I think we are the minority. I think most people choose Linux because it is "free" as in "free of charge."

I'd say that "free as in beer" *is* a form of freedom. It's liberating you from being chained to a subscription service to a major corporation that you probably don't want and doesn't really do much for you except make your bank account lighter. I loathe the subscription model for modern software and it is one of the reasons why I love Linux so much. When I installed it, Mint never asked me to set up an account (other than root). It never asked me for my credit card number. That's the way computing SHOULD be.

I use it because I do love it and have been using it since the literal beginning of it. I donate way more to FOSS projects than I ever would spend on buying software or computers. But yes I see it. Did this for the local nursing homes in my hometown for almost a decade. Passed the mantel on a couple of years ago. We've made it to where each and every resident had a tablet capable of emailing their loved ones, and a computer room where they could voice chat and play games online with other residents. (chess, checkers, and an assortment of card games). If it wasn't for linux, I don't think this would have ever been possible. It really breathed new life into their old hardware and many of the donated systems.

I am so honest. The biggest reason I switched to Linux was that I was unemployed, my credit card was blocked by the bank, and where I live has a terrible local currency-USD ratio. I really cannot afford paying for OS and I don't like pirating. You cannot imagine how life-saver the GNU/Linux has been for me. I will never give up using Debian (What I am using right now). GNU/Linux is as super hero as Wolverine for me. Because it was with me and supported me when I was broken. Thus, Linux rules forever, for me.

My current laptop is ten years old. It came with Windows 8 w/ downgrade rights to use Windows 7. Swapped the hard drive out for an SSD a few years ago and it still feels like new. It can technically "run" up to Windows 10, but that compatibility abruptly and arbitrarily ends with Windows 11 just because it does not have a TPM 2.0 module. But that's okay, because it runs Linux anyway, and I see no end in sight with its Linux compatibility.

That is one of the major factors for me. The windows path is one of constantly upgrading hardware and then third party software because they won't run on the new version of windows so then you have to upgrade. Just a constant flow of money going out. And I really hate this idea of constant upgrades. If a piece of software works, why do I need an upgrade? Why should I invest my valuable time to learn a whole new layout for new software to do the things I was already doing with unbloated software. I am loving linux.

One extra reason why Linux freedom is good: it lets you learn more about what an operating system does than what Windows lets you learn. Zero cost was my first reason why I switched over, but then, as I started learning more about Linux, I also started to appreciate its true value even more. Oh, and one more thing: Linux isn't born out of a corporate and obscene pursuit of profit at any cost like Windows is. Instead, Linux is the altruistic product of countless of contributors who just want the best out of everyday computing and don't mind sharing that with everyone else. I'm immensely grateful to all of them.

Most people do not want to learn about the OS. That's not why they buy a computer. It's to get work done using software running ON the computer.
@glucid4222
@glucid4222 20 сағат бұрын
@@TheoWerewolf True, most people don't want to do that, but when the OS that you paid for as part of the whole hardware + software package breaks down, doesn't do what you want it to do, or worse still, doesn't let you get your work done, what do you do? You can either give up, try to tinker with it and try to make it work the way it's supposed to and expected to - by which stage you're left with no choice but to need to learn about the OS....or get another OS that let's you have full control over it, and lets you get your work done. Between forking out for something that still needs you to stick your hands in it, and getting one for free that still let's you do that, and more so, I know which one I'd rather go with in the end. Just like most PC users, I started with Windows as well, but when the hardware lasts longer that the Windows version that came with it, and the next Windows version wasn't allowed to replace it on the same PC, I had no choice but to use an OS that came for free, worked better than Windows, and finally let me own my own damned PC. When something doesn't have a price tag, it means that it earns its value by other means.

Sorry you had a bad experience. You need to look at Linux as something new and different, not a version of Windows. You are used to Windows and see it as the de-facto way how things should work. Linux is different and in many ways better. It can be difficult to get work done at first because you 'know' how to do it but it fails on Linux. I solved that by forgetting everything I knew in Windows and stated from scratch and let logic guide me. I kept notes on everything I did. The smallest problem got written down. A few years later and I hardly ever use my notes. There is plenty help out there, some good and some that just leaves you hanging. You need to be prepared to look for solutions in many places. Once you find the answer, write it down. It takes effort to change and make your computer safe. Every minute you spend doing that will be time saved in the future. Tone down your expectations. Realize you know nothing and be prepared to learn from the ground up. It will get easier and better quickly. Things that stumped me seem obvious now. When Windows spyware goes full online and people get hacked and lose $$$ you will be happy you endured a few weeks of hair pulling to learn to regain control of your machine. Good luck.

Indeed. Learning something is really expensive. Think of University fees. They charge you thousands for every year, some even tens of thousands. So one has to expect, that you have to pay for software to learn to use it. If I use Linux, I don't have to pay for the tool, if I use Windows or MacOS, I have to pay. The biggest selling point of Linux nowadays is personal privacy and the escape from Big Tech's surveillance (the Matrix). I've switched relatively recently from Win to Linux, and at that time I was fed up with Windows, it was crashing, making the PC worse and worse. On top of that Win10 was approaching EOL and Win11 required me to buy new hardware, so I can help Microsoft spy on me better. wtf?! So, at that point I've already decided to abandon ship, but the thing is - I thought my PC has some hardware issue(s), so I was ready to buy new PC for the Linux. First I just installed Linux to test it on the old PC (but still thinking I'd need to upgrade) - and guess what - zero crashes since I moved to Linux and up to this day. Want Windows for free? Sign up for a class at a community College! Your student emails give you a Windows 10 Education (before that was 8.1 Embedded Industry Pro) or Server licenses! With that out of the way, I went to Linux because I wanted to learn something new and I was sick of seeing my 10 year old setup having its CPU resources wrapped up in all sorts of Windows processes that don't even have relevance to you playing a game (for example)! The one thing you don't learn about with Windows Vs Linux is how all the ways we "cheap out" on builds causes ACPI firmware issues (our "boards") related to the kernel! I like the different (and free) variety of software available for Linux! But being cheap wasn't the only reason I did it! It's that the equipment serves me well and Linux facilitates that!

Yes, and if you want to feel like you paid for it, you can help with development. This can be something as low tech as getting the latest copy of a given program and trying to "break" it by doing weird things that the authors never thought of. If you can document a bug and explain how to recreate it in a few steps, you have a way to help. You can read through the lists of existing bugs and then add any new ones is you find them.

Sorry - utter BS. I have Win 10 running on a ThinkPad 240 - from 2003. On a Toshiba SV700 from 2007. On a Samsung Q1 UMPC from 2007. Maybe YOU can't get it to work, but that doesn't mean it's not possible (or even difficult). Maybe you're not quite as clever or tech savvy as you think you are. Your point is valid for Win 11 and guess what? Win 11 has the worst adoption rate of any Windows since Vista exactly because Microsoft decided to put an arbitrary CPU level support on it. But more to the point, so what? Look, if you want to live in a museum and tinker with 20+ year old PCs - cool, have fun... but that's hardly a selling point to most people who just go buy a fricking new computer because they don't want to screw around with a hundred distros, desktops, filesystems etc - they buy a computer to get work done with software they know on a platform that runs it. They literally don't care what that is (ok, except Mac fans, but they can be... shall we say.. special?) Don't think so? Well chew on this: Windows is 68% of all desktop computers, macOS is 21%, fricking ChromeOS is 4% and Linux is a whopping 3%. And Macs are renowned for being expensive - doesn't seem to stop people buying them. Windows runs on $200 laptops. That's cheap enough for most people. It's NOT about cost for the vast majority of people. Clearly the things you see as problems with Windows and macOS - the people buying computers and using them do NOT see as problems. Even on platforms that are arguably Linux based like Android and ChromeOS - people are not buying those devices to run Linux. Like BSD Unix on macOS - it's the underlying system that most users never see or care about. At some point Linux fans will get over this superiority complex induced resentment and learn WHY people aren't going with Linux - it's all about the workflow. Linux workflows are just awful and feel like they were designed by people with literally zero training in UI/UX design. Gimp may be technically more powerful than Photoshop, but if your workflows are Photoshop centric (and most are), then Gimp is a nightmare of inconsistant and bad UI design. Inkscape is even worse. (Although I will grant you Win 11 is almost as bad. Almost... but at least the apps are well written.) Until then, enjoy being #4 behind *ChromeOS*. *snicker*

Until recently I was running Linux (and sadly Windows) on a HP Z620 Workstation (2012 vintage) that I got as a used bargain last year, and to be honest they both ran fine. I was a Mac user in the past, and the OS updates were changed to 'free', just as long as your hardware was still supported by the new version, although forced obsolescence was not and still is not something that I'm happy about, although I do understand why to a point. Personally I use Linux because it does what I want when I want it to, without worrying about being spied on or having data on my PC sold by Microsoft or whoever, just because I have their OS or software. I do still have 2 dual-boot PC's, but they won't be dual-boot for much longer, I just need to finalise a few things then I'll get rid of Windows for good!!

I truly don't mind paying for software as long as I get to keep and own it, I'm on Linux because of the open source aspect... Once you realize that our entire modern world DEPENDS on digital infrastructure you realize your entire digital existence is in the hands of proprietary file systems. I simply can not allow such a thing. I distance my self as much as possible form proprietary formats and from software which is SaaS based. I much rather have drives formatted to either EXT4 or BTRFS than APFS or NTFS because I know I will always have access. It takes just a single stick drive with which ever flavor of Linux downloaded from anywhere on the planet with no extra steps. Meanwhile accessing APFS or NTFS requires much more than just a USB stick drive with an OS.

I doubt that it's as much as you think but that doesn't mean this isn't important. You could just keep reusing your student edition of Photoshop from 20 years ago. You could still be using Win 10 on a 14 year old PC or a 12 year old laptop with 4 Gigs of Ram. (Or win 7 behind a firewall). Instead, Linux allowed you to compute and do things as if you were spending thousands. It's allowed you to appreciate your hardware and software more and it's given you a hobby that's mostly free and opened your world up. You live a much richer life than if you didn't. Now ask a Linux Thinkpad Enthusiast if they have saved money. They might be buying former $3500 systems for $75 on Ebay, but they likely already have a functional computer. You could save money by working on your car as a hobby. But likely you'll spend more in some cases because you'll do more work on your car than you need and you'll want a car you enjoy working on. TLDR; I'm making a stupid distinction that doesn't need to be made. Linux is still great and yes, there is a great satisfaction to reviving E-waste and putting it to some use when a fresh copy of a light distro.

I don't think paying for Windows upgrades has really been a thing for close to 10 years. They'd been doing upgrades from 7 onwards for free. Perhaps there was end dates on that but think for most people on Windows it's not really been a cost and, as I understand it, MacOS is also free if you're prepared to pay the price for their hardware. That being said, paying for Windows upgrades was what made me jump ship and by the time it got round to XP I was sick and tired of it and went to Linux rather than have to pay to continue you use my perfectly fine hardware, as well as the prospect of having to suffer the indignity to the "Tomy My First Computer" asthetics. And thank god I did because I fully avoided the car crash that was Windows 8. But, yes, I do agree "This will save you considerable money". And it's not just about being cheap (and if it was, who cares?) because, certainly with me it was that I wanted the freedom to continue to use hardware I'd paid good money for and knew still had a good amount of life left in it. How many perfectly good, relatively recent, computers will unnecessarily become e-waste when because Microsoft delivers a message saying the machine won't support Windows 11? Freedom from artificial obselecence is a worthy freedom as well as saving money!

This is the spirit of the 4 essential freedoms. Being "free of cost" is a "by-the-way benefit." Those of us who use the software free of cost can treat it as our payment in kind for using, testing & documenting watt ever quirks are in the software to improve future versions of it. i think thats more effective being the case that testors are the 1s that have a real world use case

And paradoxically, I started with it on a 2 or 3 year old Win11 laptop I bought second hand, for maybe third or quarter of the price of a new one. So I have the best of both worlds now, when the need comes. Win11 on a usb, Linux on nvme and another Linux on exVista laptop I myself refurbished and tried several distros, 32 and 64 bit, settling on Wilma. Microsoft has ditched that machine long ago, not sure it would run Win7 evven. But with Wilma it is a perfect machine, still with a dvd mechanics! It even burned its own Wilma installation dvd, as it won't boot from a usb, that old it is! Bios only recognises up to 3GB RAM.

"Not going to get free upgrades on Windows or Mac" I don't know about Mac, but ever since Windows 10, the upgrade to 11 was free. Every security and system upgrade so far has been free. The initial cost however, is a bummer. Esp if you're buying Pro for some reason, as all the tools that come with Pro, you can download free of charge or there's better software alternatives. If we're solely going by the video title, this feels kind of a nothing burger when it comes to the OS itself, considering Microsoft does free updates, and most new system come with windows pre-installed, and many manufacturers don't have an opt-out during purchase. But dang, if you don't save money on quality software you'd otherwise pay a fortune for on MS.

Main thing that sucks about Linux is that it doesn’t work for every niche use case that you might have for it. For example, DaVinci resolve is horrible on Linux and you have to use distro box to get it to work and even then it breaks sometimes. And if you’re like me and you’re running a gaming channel, you pretty much have to use either premiere pro or DaVinci resolve because the timeline really gets busy with those kinds of videos and Kdenlive just can’t handle it. And not to mention how many games don’t run on Linux. I play Siege and Apex Legends and neither of those games run on Linux. And recently GTAV dropped Linux support for no reason whatsoever. I run Gentoo on my laptop, but my desktop will remain on windows until these problems get fixed.

It's true that Linux has problem with the 'edge' cases and not being able to run Adobe is a major drag. If you have ot run Adobe products Linux is out of the question. But it's a bit of a numbers game. More software will be ported over when Linux hits a certain market share - between 10 and 15%. Yeah, a long way to go but Linux share is increasing and people cannot afford all new hardware all the time. The more people who do NOT have weird/edge cases, the "I use Google" users switch over the more Linux market share will increase. The edge cases will never be resolved until more people switch.

@@jedipadawan7023 True, but there are people whose livelihoods depend on software that is only available on windows.
