NOTE: I've fixed the issue with the dmenu script that sets our background (dm-setbg) for those installing from here on. I've also changed all the Xmonad keybindings that launch the various Emacs programs to use SUPER+e followed by another key (rather than CTRL+e which VirtualBox uses).

Why you don't define a bash function for screen resolution to automatically refraw conky and wallpaper immediately after setting resolution with xrandr? Instead of running four commands by hand, you could just run a command (one function which can be named xrandr, it aliases actual xrandr) and it will handle everything

If I'm not completely mistaken, vbox makes their keybindings with the "HOST"-key which is just configurable in vbox settings. It's on RIGHT-CTRL by default though, so LEFT-CTRL+E should not conflict with that

Props for keeping your errors in your videos. In general, I do not want the WM to use any [Ctrl] keybindings at all, because it conflicts with so many programs. I prefer the consistency of reserving [Super] for the OS + WM and [Ctrl] for applications.

DTOS is really slick Derek. What a great learning tool to follow Distrotube's various with DTOS. FYI, if the base installation is Garuda, the locale entry is correctly set and all that's required is the CTYPE line entry. Piece of cake. I did not have one single issue with the script. Zero errors! And I have not run into any issues using Xmonad, Awesome, or Qtile! Your set up is grand sir!!! Thank you, Derek for letting us use it!!!

No, it only works on systemd and it's the only init system that I will be worrying about supporting, since eventually this will be made into a proper ISO based on Arch with systemd.

@@0x007A Could be worthwhile. I believe Artix makes things somewhat easier dependency-wise since it still uses elogind for compatibility. The real challenge would be getting it to work with Obarun since it's even more diehard and doesn't even use elogind, at least by default.

Awesome video, I dig the style of DTOS. This inspired me to do my first Arch installation (from scratch on a VM), following both the arch wiki and the video. At the beginning I went for a EFI install that went wrong. On the third I lowered my expectations (setting the base arch as you did) and I managed to get up and running DTOS. My only problem is doom emacs did not install properly (no ~/.doom.d for instance). I had some errors during doom emacs installation which I could't get a grip on and I'm currently trying to solve. I'll love to see a video breaking down the "logic" behind DTOS: how it was assambled, something about the choice of applications and what is your idea of a base desktop system set-up, the included config files and so on. I'll like to be able to make it my own, so some pointers into the details would be much appreciated. Thanks for this!

Hey I love the channel and you seem to know a great deal about the system and how it works. I've recently turned my unused laptop into Arch with DTOS and I'm slowly getting better, it was for sure a learning experience from the get go and also when trying to fix different stuff. I'm currently stuck trying to scale "trayer" icons such as "nm-applet" and "volumeicon" but can't seem to find a way to configure it individually. I managed to scale everything else (my laptop has a 4k monitor so high dpi is an issue). Is there a way that I'm missing? Should I have just gone from the start to set my PPI, and screen dimensions in xorg and then set xrandr output scale? Thanks a lot for all the good work you put in :)

Just FYI, 'setfont ter-132n' will resize the font in the Arch installer. That way you won't have to use the VirtualBox software to resize the lettering of the TTY. ter-132n is a nice easy font to read during an Arch Linux installation. :)

i guess it's not about the size, it's about complexity. have you seen the sudoers file? it's scary as hell, while basic doas config looks like "permit :wheel". sudo could be useful in a complex multi-user environment where fine-grained permission setup has to be done. but for daily needs, which are just running few commands with superuser privileges, sudo is just an overkill.

It is bloated for a program that most desktop users use to run something as root. And bloat doesn't necessarily mean more disk space, it sometimes means more internal complexity, which also translates to bugs, security vulnerabilities and bad user experience

It is nice to see more scripts. I saw one guy who did one for Arch that would install KDE and many others using Arch. I guess it would start the install of Arch but then you would go to where his command lived download and run it and it would do the rest of the install. Nice to see some thing different though as we can use a lot more of these.

DT is the man. I learned so much from his channel. Things like what a tiling WM is, how to set up Qtile (which I now run), and many other things. But, over the weekend I tried both DTOS and ArchTitus and I have to say, Titus has the better OS. On DTOS I could never get Conky to behave for me and show me all of the shortcuts. Using DTOS w/o these shortcuts was just not a pleasant experience. Contrast that with ArchTitus, which uses KDE, and while I don't know any of the shortcuts there I also don't need to know them. I can get stuff done without a single shortcut. Also, while both OS use around the same amount of RAM, I found that ArchTitus used significantly less CPU. On my old laptop that CPU difference was very noticeable.

I didn't set the keyboard when installing Arch because qwerty is default. But you should set it when installing Arch yourself. Just follow the Wiki.

I've seen several videos where you go through the process of removing the "optical drive", i.e. the .iso file from VirtualBox. You don't have to do that. You can just use down arrow to select Boot Existing OS from the boot menu.

Perhaps including your own walkthrough guide of how to install vanilla arch and/or a link to the video that you did earlier might be a useful thing to include in the documentation for DTOS. I can imagine most installing DTOS for the first time would do so in a virtual machine and be able to follow along. Having a guide that is simpler than the arch wiki that can be looked up on a phone for when installing on bare metal might be of help to a lot of new arch users. The wiki page can be a bit of a distraction for an inexperienced user. Also, there are a lot of poor quality guides out there with many typos that may be leading to a lot of the basic issues that are being reported

Super-E is probably a better keybinding anyway, but probably the issue is you're pressing the VirtualBox "Host Key" (defaults to right Ctrl). If you pressed the left Ctrl instead your original keybinding probably would have worked.

I tried this on a KVM virtual machine but I used UEFI -- Arch install goes normally, the download and install of DTOS goes off without a hitch, but at the reboot it hangs on the "starting version ...arch" screen but doesn't load the login manager :/ I'll try doing an MBR with a i386 machine like you used and see what happens.

just looking at the script and it seems that it won't overwrite anything except login manager (it's using sddm). it'll even do a backup of .config directory. but i think it will run smoother on a fresh clean system though, but i'm not totally sure about this...

Arch Linux rocks but I love my Gentoo/Funtoo based Bentoo OS more. If you can make the compromise Gentoo/Funtoo is very stable and you can install x11 nvidia driver 455. I'm very happy with my Gentoo
