The lead singer David Draiman had a girlfriend who committed suicide when he was 16. "It was an unbelievably horrific and painful experience, and it was cathartic to make the song, and it really took me having a certain mindset to do it, and I had to wait 'til I was ready." - David Draiman

To add more to the story - His girlfriend was a drug addict which subsequently made him one as well. His then girlfriend couldn't cope with their breakup which was largely due to him switching schools and moving to a different city or state can't remember which it was. She was found dead with a needle in her arm in the corner of a nightclub. At least that's the story I found, idk if it's the truth or not.

As someone who’s struggled with suicide, Disturbed was one of the few things on earth to calm me. I’m now on medication and I’m in a better place. Strangely everytime I wanted to commit suicide, it was after I went cold turkey and stopped drinking. 14 years sober but also 14 years of a fucked up mind. Give or take I guess.

this song hits really close to home for me. when i was 12 i had a girlfriend in the 7th grade. she had a really tough life, her mother died of cancer, her father was abusive and barely home so she had to take care of her sister. i would spend every day with her and help her out take care of her sister. in december after school it was a wednesday i went to her house after getting off of the bus since we lived in the same neighborhood. she kept a spare key under the door matt so i could get inside and get settled to do homework and help her with her chores and responsibilities. she ended up taking her life that day. she use to cut alot and i tried to help. but when i walked in that house and walked to her room i set my bag on her bed and looked around the house for her and couldnt find her. which i found odd cause she said i could come over after school on the bus ride home. i saw the bathroom light on and knocked, i heard no response and i waited a couple seconds and knocked again. srill nothing and so when i tried to open the door it was locked so i ended up taking a screwdriver and unlocking the bathroom door. i found her lifeless body still somewhat warm but dead. i didnt know how to handle it all i could think of was to call 911. her father came home later that day and he tried to blame me for her taking her life saying it was my fault and didnt allow me to know where she was burried or even go to the service. for along time up until i turned 16 i struggled with suicidal thoughts and i started to self harm via cutting. i went to go take my life by cutting my wrists vertically in my grandparents shed. when my grandpa was alive i went to go talk to him one last time and he didnt turn around until i started to choke on my words and he said to me " you have the same look in your eyes that my father had before he shot himself in the head. whats wrong" and itold him everything. he didnt call anyone but he sat me down and talked to me and had me promise not to take my own life. ive kept that promise ever since. he passed away in 2018 about a year after i promised him i wouldnt kill myself.

Just in case it wasnt evident, the version of david with the corpse was him, and the one singing covered in blood was the devil telling him to kill himself to join the girl. Hence the line "take your place inside the fire with me"

I had stop commenting on reactions but felt I had to comment here. I am in recovery. I have not recovered. Only from a seemingly hopeless state of mind . I stay clean and sober one day at a time based on my spiritual, not religious, fitness. I can't stay clean and sober on yesterday's recovery. I must always remember where I came from because I am always 1 drink or drug away from losing my sobriety regardless if I have 1 day, 1 year, 10 years or 30 years. I have seen people with 30 years go back out. Some make it back others don't. Locked up, covered up, or sober. Alcoholism is 100% fatal and it is an ugly death. There is no guarantee that you will make it back in. I am a very strong 12 step person and it is in the fellowship that a person looking for or to maintain their sobriety will find the support they need because only people in recovery understand how insidious essential nature of the disease. Cunning, baffling and powerful. It doesn't take a day off so neither do I. It does get more familiar over time. Be it aa, celebrate recovery, smart program get help, learn about your disease. Your life depends on it. Finally there is a very strong connection between mental illness and substance abuse. If you have both, you must treat both to be successful with either. Thank you for allowing me to use this as a platform for 2 diseases that I live with

Well this video has me in tears!!! I'm an addict alcoholic in recovery (23yrs) and my reason to fight is my son. I do have triggers and unfortunately they are my Mom...Dad and youngest sister. But I'm going strong cuz I know that if I relapse I'll lose my son... myself and God and I'm not willing to lose any of that. I'm bipolar with severe depression and anxiety and I've attempted suicide five times. When I'm on my meds I'm fine but sometimes I get locked in my depression and pray that I don't wake up...I swore when my son was born I'd never do anything to hurt him on purpose and that would be the ultimate hurt for him. Earlier this year my 22yr old cousin committed suicide and we're all very broken up by it. Especially his Mom. No one knew he was feeling like that. We with mental illness are masters of hiding what is really going on with us due to the stigma of being "crazy". David Draiman's girl commited suicide when they were 16yrs old and it really messed him up. He's at a point in his life where he can voice it and work through it and it's a kick ass song. I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed day my friend!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 🐧🐧 Sorry so long.

I saw them a couple months ago. He had the house lights brought up and asked the crowd how many of us suffer with addiction and or depression. An uncomfortable amount of hands went up. They had that number up on the big screen. He said we need to fight this demon. During the song a Reason to Fight some girl decided to utilize the space where people mosh to do an interpretive dance for the whole song. I was up in the seats looking down on this. So powerful. Im choked up recalling it.

Inside the Fire is an experience to listen to... It changed my perspective on what music could become David Dariman described the song as what he thought the Devil whispered to him as he stood over the girl's casket at her funeral. Suggestions: Disturbed - The Vengeful One, Stricken, Indestructible.... Also, Device - Out of Line (ft. Serj Tanakian and David Draiman)

All the songs i have heard from DISTURBED have a message in them. DAVID DRAIMAN IS BRINGING awareness to a lot of people. And I for onr one think its AWESOME that he is. I am 63 years old and i cant remember any other groups that have done that with there music. Hes talking about things that's gooing on now and have been going on for years. But most people don't talk about it. Or try to raise awareness about it. DAVID DRAIMAN IS A GREAT ARTIST. More people need to keep an open mind and listen to some of their music.

This a quote is from the Director about this song. Guitarist Dan Donegan explained to Artist Direct about this tale of someone plunging into the afterlife in the hope of reuniting with his deceased girlfriend: "It's a really dark vision and the song, the lyrics and the meaning, is very dark. It's the darkest stuff that I think David (singer David Draiman) has ever written lyrically. It's about a girl he was in a relationship with. She's committed suicide, and he just has the voice of the devil over his shoulder trying to provoke him to take his own life to join her again, because the only chance for him to be with her again is if he takes his life. We're not condoning suicide off of this, it's just more of the temptation to join a girlfriend that was very confused and messed up and wanted out." I get that this is tough as hell in regards to the making the song itself but it does look at the darker side of what the survivors have to live with.

The recreation of the scene was actually something David had to deal with when he was 16 years old! I don't know the whole story but it effected David quite a bit! The second song, well...I wish I had heard it when I was in my late 20's! I became very depressed, although none of my family members or my friends knew what I was going through. At that same time I started drinking...!my alcohol of choice was Rum. I drank copious amounts at time, because at 6'6" & 320 lbs...I was able to drink without it really bothering me...so I thought! What it did was to make me more depressed. Fast forward from 1985 to July 31, 1999....I decided to stop...get help and set my life on a different course. Today, I am 22 years, 6 months and 11 days sober! If I can humble myself and get help...so can anyone else. There are trained people, where ever you live, that will help you and won't be judgemental!

I've been to one of his concerts. Before singing "reason to fight" he made everyone close their eyes. Than he made everyone raise their hand who once thought about suicide, attempted it, has depression or knows someone who deals with the above. When we opened our eyes every single one in the crowd had their hand up. There was this deep connection between everyone in the air. I had tears in my eyes for the whole time. Probably will never forget this feeling.

This was a tough video to watch for me. I love Disturbed because they hit these hard subjects. About ten years ago, my now ex-wife lost our third baby in two years. I found her unconscious on the floor in our living room. She had intentionally overdosed on anti-anxiety meds, and her pulse faint. The paramedics got her to the hospital in time, but I'll never forget how pale she was...or how helpless I felt. I still have nightmares about it sometimes. She got help and is living a happy life now. The point is don't ever give up on life. I've been through so many painful things in my life, but that experience is the reason why I could never do that to my family. Seek help, call a friend, or just talk to a stranger. You are worth so much more than you could ever know...and you would be sorely missed.

It is incredibly hard to lose someone to suicide. the youngest member of my band before we went seperate ways (we are still close, just screwed over by the label, can't say anymore on it though), our keyboardist killed himself. I was the one that found him. We still blame ourselves for what happened. We were a band, a family. I was almost the member that went through with it but was found by a manager and rushed to the hospital. I can't put into words what that does to you... The emotions you go through and the things that run through your head. The thoughts.... I still have nightmares today... Rest In Piece Jamie...

Disturbed is so unusual in that they genuinely care for people and always have a message. They've helped so many people!. ....and David Draiman....about the BEST male vocalist out there. Can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from a pure voice as clear as crystal to distortion and rasp and back on a dime. A powerful and soulful voice with amazing control. Loved your reaction....was mine too.....and without too many interruptions! Lol.....thank you!

When you got to the 2nd song and was like oh we talking about all this. You spoke from the heart, you truly get what addiction can and will do. My Dad passed Nov 3rd, it completely broken me. After 10 years from alcohol, I relapsed. It's same thing I used to tell myself it numbs me up. I couldn't feel that pain. I still have not accepted that he's gone. I know he would be disappointed but he would've help me right back up. I love n miss you dad. I'll get better that's a promise

Both good songs. It was his girlfriend at the time. I believe this was awhile ago tho. Edit....think it was before he was even in the band if I remember right. I think I read that he has wrote this song years ago but felt he was ready to record it .

Hey TMG fam I liked what you said about addiction and alcoholism. I am an alcoholic that is going on 8 years sober and everyday I fight the urge to drink especially when the world seems to be against you. I love Disturbed for facing these topics head on and giving people a positive outlook and hope. Hope is what we need more of now in these messed up times. Love your channel and I am a new subscriber based on this reaction video and the kind words you have for your followers. Amen to you and the entire TMG family.

A reason to fight is a song I listen to as much as I can cuz it hits home for me. Addiction and the demons that come with it are brutal. Supporting someone with addiction is also one of the hardest things to do. You hit good with these songs together man and I have a ton of respect for you to touch on these subjects together and not run from them. 🤘❤️

My aunt walked in on my cousin hanging from the ceiling fan in 2018. She was one of the only people id really talk to in my whole family cause we understood each other cause we both struggled with depressed and shit. There's times inlife where you have to look to the people that are closest to you. No matter what theres gonna be a light at the end of the tunnel. Yes it may take a long time to get there but ya gotta stick with it and keep trying. Theres people that care and that want you around no matter whatcha think about urself.

Love this song. A lot of pain in the lyrics that I know well. Also, for people like me that hate talking on the phone, there is a suicide prevention chat on the web, was very helpful for me a few years ago. I had just split up with my wife, my kids were being held away from me and I lost my mom while I gave CPR in the span in a couple of weeks. Even the counselor was trying to find positivity. I think he thought I was messing with him at first.

I can't help but cry everytime I hear Inside the Fire... I love the band and really enjoy listening to them. As for A Reason to Fight I have lived with an Alcoholic Father and my ex died of an overdose... and every day I watch my Daughter struggle with addiction... it is heartbreaking. So I hear it... I feel it.

People are battling all kinds of things and A Reason to Fight hit home with me. This is a very powerful song and music is powerful. That really accomplishes the goal of this band which is to make people feel powerful. You are not alone! We are all in this together. If no one else is in your corner I am. Stay strong. You can win the battle. Keep fighting.

He said that when he was at her funeral that the devil was whispering in his ear for him to take his own life to be with her again. he thankfully was able to deal with it in his way and is sending a message to those who feel they can't go on that there is hope and to not give up.

@13:37, once again, you're SO right! Once an addict, ALWAYS an addict, whether it's a recovering addict or not, and there's also programs for families of addicts as well AL-ANON is a place where families can go to help them understand addiction and how it works and helps you to realize and understand that it isn't THAT person, and it's a disease, and it also runs in families!! SO if it's in your family bloodline, it's better to just NOT do anything you can become addicted to....

You're a good man. Suicide and addiction are difficult subjects to talk about, but you took on the challenge and did a great job. Especially at the end with "give them a reason to fight". Love isn't passive, it's not in what you feel, it's in what you do. Never hesitate to let those closest to you know exactly what they mean to you. Even it sounds cliché or sappy, just do it. You never know who's tying that noose while you're too busy thinking of the right words.

a reason to fight is about the struggle with not just addiction but also depression and all mental illness. so the message isnt so much about battling addiction alone its about battling all your inner demons and that your not alone their is always a reason to keep fighting and never give up. as someone whos been battling depression for 6 years this song has been my saving grace and its been able to help me put what im going through into words to be able to get the help i need. there is always a reason to fight and never give up even if it may seem like there is not there always is and your never alone.

I started listening to disturbed at the age of 13, and it took me until the age of 17 I figured out this song was about suicide, because I only used to listen to the audio track, not the music video, my heart reaches out to David Draiman, he really seems like an amazing man. It takes a lot of strength to be able to write a song about a loved ones death. For that, I respect him and his strength.
