Shein might offer deals that fellow fast-fashion brands just can’t compete with, but why are eerie messages allegedly arriving in packages delivered to customers? Is there something most buyers aren’t aware of?

It’s weird repeating outfits has become a bad thing now. It used to be so normal. People would have about 30 outfits MAX and that was it. It’s so weird how I never see anyone wearing the same thing twice now. I started noticing it happening around 2016. It was always a thing with celebrities but never regular people like it is now.

Coming from a fashion student, I feel that it's great to actually learn how to sew. Not necessarily sew our clothes from scratch, but to upcycle our existing clothes into something new. I was taught to learn how to sew clothes from a vocational school, to now me just crocheting my own clothes. I can agree on both people not affording expensive well made clothing and workers from the other side of the world are getting mistreated and getting paid so little for so many working hours. See making your own clothes as a technical skill; a valuable skill to have. You can literally have the power to create a whole cool new wardrobe that really fits your style or simply repurposing/reworking your clothes that you don't wear it anymore.

Same here. I buy all my clothes secondhand and I know how to make my own, using thrifted fabric. Old bed sheets = shirt. Valance = pants. Couch cover = cloak. Old bathrobe = soft toys. It's a creative exercise to think about how an item can be repurposed.

@twit3537 Жыл бұрын
@@galacticgremlin There are thrift stores and organizations that can help with clothing people who have a hard time affording to do so as well as buying 'basic', non-brand name clothing is also an option. This website isn't for 'basic necessity' clothing that would be 'regularly priced' but is a FASHION or 'optional' clothing website whose products would obviously be way more expensive otherwise. So those clothing your refering to as 'regular price' wouldn't be reasonable to mark or state their prices as 'average' or 'regular' when in reality the clothing its mimicking would be extremely expensive (hence they make money off of cheap knock offs based off of expensive name brands). Don't turn this into 'it helps the poor' thing because there are other options and this one is honestly not worth it if you actually are having a hard time with clothing because it won't be warm, it will easily fall apart and it may even ship in the wrong size/may not fit how you wanted it to. I wouldn't open my wallet for people who want name-brand (rip off or authentic) or hella expensive/'fashion purpose' clothing if they can't afford it and if they are in need of clothing then I would find their focus skewed if they would put their money into fashion knock offs than reliable clothing which would last longer.

I worked at a food bank during college and talked with people facing poverty daily. They don’t have money for high quality pieces. And no, most of them don’t have time to go thrift shopping either. Sometimes I wonder if Shein gets Villainized in the media because they are a threat to also fast fashion places like target and basically every other store out there. They can’t compete cause we are buying direct from China and cutting out the middle man. I have found the exact same products at target, flower hair claw clips for one example, that are sold both on shein and at target. I know fast fashion is bad. But at this point, what can the consumer do? Sure there are a few supposed places that are good to buy from. But when places like target and mall brands have lessened in quality so much that I can’t justify paying up for items, because it’s the same stuff. I also wonder that the toxicity testing is being targeted at shein and not looked at for mall brands. I remember reports that came out back in the 90s that were all over the news that spoke about how toxic synthetic materials are and chemical dyes that are used. I think that we need to be careful on where all this attention is directed. It’s not just Shein.

Are we also going to stop buying smartphones? Not condoning what shein and other brands have done, but at this point, if you consume anything you don’t make yourself, you’re contributing. Again, in instances like this - Shein is a blatant labor trafficker, the nastiest one of them all, except there's a new one Temu You boycott sending a strong message we want our clothing produced in humane working conditions. You make an example of them Then you purposely research and look for better quality clothes. If you can't afford, those you buy way less clothing, only what you need and you look for quality-made items Usually sweatshop items are poorly sewn because they have to do it super fast. Also the quality of the material. You don't want synthetics because the potential for hazard - again it sends a message we don't want people handling hazardous material all day long, nor do we want to wear it all day long Then we advocate, petition and protest to stores, brands and to our legislation Yes, it takes work. This! What's the point in buying more expensive clothes if they just come out of the same factory? Lately, I've been splurging on more expensive clothes that I know are Australian Made but it's unrealistic to expect people to not have some cheap clothes in their wardrobe, whether you buy clothes at Shein, Target, or Nike it's all from a Chinese sweatshop. And while we should all encourage people to buy better quality clothes that aren't made by people in terrible conditions, I don't have it in me to blame them for trying to shop on a budget when the more expensive clothes are just as terrible as the cheap clothes.

While I won’t personally support shein people dragging down those that shop there are probably still shopping themselves at Walmart, target, dollar tree, and a lot of big name brands (read expensive) and you’re kidding yourselves if you think their business practices are any better. Target recently was selling a crocheted sweater for $30, crochet can’t be done by machine so someone made that by hand and they can sell it for that price, what do you think the maker made? We live in a capitalist hellscape where it’s practically impossible to shop in a moral way, especially when on a tight budget, make choices that make you feel good but don’t drag others for having to make their own choices.

The question would still stand though. Would you rather buy from a place that produces thousands of clothing pieces daily and gets a work process that on average takes weeks done in a few days OR would you rather shop from a place that produces less waste and has clothes you could use as 'hand me downs' at least 2 to 4 times before you have to donate it? No one is saying that shein is the ONLY fashion to EVER waste, produce cheap clothing with cheap material and pay workers under a dollar for something that's sold for over 20 bucks but we are stating a question of between the two, which is arguably better considering the fact that all fashion brands waste? And during the posing of that question most people would choose Amazon, Target, Walmart etc. over shein ANY day.

He said, "where we lived it was so poor, $1 a day helped feed his family" they did really struggle but without work in the area, his parents like most other parents, left their children in the care of other family members to go to work. It was the norm back then. The people who work in sweat shops are there because they have to be. If we stop buying, what happens to these families who rely on this income for their families? Fast fashion being toxic to the environment and to the people that make it has been known for a very long time. Its not like we didn't know, it's just that people seemingly forgot why fast fashion is so problematic. Though fast fashion companies are not the only guilty ones. There are plenty of higher cost brands that have used sweatshops to create their goods. I've been a student and had very little money, so I've bought clothes I could afford that were definitely fast fashion. My issue is more with the influencers that get paid to film clothes hauls and the absolutely with the companies themselves. Now there are so many more options available to just buy loads of clothes for cheap online and get shipped to you, so it's so convenient and also a big part of the appeal. I still don't have a lot of money spare, but I'm trying to be more careful, by thrifting clothes second hand and by altering and upcycling them myself to make them different. I don't know what the solution is, but I hope that there are some viable solutions to reduce the amount of waste and pollution from the fast fashion industries.

@@alexisvanauken2434 I'm thinking the way of writing the tags clothes was a way to say they need help without Shein viewing it and thinking that's the case, at least not right away. By hiding the message of "need your help", within badly translated directions, it doesn't make Shein think twice and think "Hmm are they reaching out", it makes them think "okay this is bad translation they'll understand, right, probably, who cares." When someone found the message of needing help, the message spread further, and more people started to become aware of the reality of things. Even if it was truly just bad translation, it still worked out in the end.

the "need your help" is just a bad translation, the tag is trying to say you should manually hand wash the garment but the translation came out wrong...in other words, don't use a machine, use the power of your own hands...it sounds weird in English but it makes sense in other languages. with that said however, YES I believe shein is still a sweat shop, but the tag is just a poor translation of asking you to manually wash the clothes.

I mean this will all respect because I’m a home sewer. The widest part of my body is about 40 inches (hips) so let’s say I made a slip dress that takes 2yards of fabric. To increase the size of clothing it takes (for height or weight) it takes a lot more fabric yardage. Fabric cost $2-$40 a yard depending on the pattern. More fabric the more the cost. Bigger clothes should cost more, Because it’s more material. But I understand we do not get paid enough for that here in the states😢. Don’t buy trendy items buy classic items that you’ll get longer wear out of and can create more ensembles by interchanging items. All love ❤

Not to excuse that ALL clothes, not just SHEIN, are made in sweatshops...but am I the only one catching that the "need help" message might be poor translation? The whole thing reads: "DUE THE WATER SAVING TECHNOLOGY, NEED YOUR HELP WASHING WITH THE SOFT DETERGENT AT THE FIRST TIME TO MAKE THE GOODS SOFTER." To me, thinking as a foreigner, I would assume that means like "Yo, we didn't want to waste water and spend on equipment, so could you wash this yourself before you wear it?"

not defending shein whatsoever but the "need you help" message seems like it's directly translated from chinese. it's probably something like "please wash this in softener etc." but instead of "please", it was translated into "need your help". i've seen lots of these in china (i'm chinese) so i was thinking it might not be as ominous but i'm actually glad people felt it was a cry for help because it definitely raised some media attention towards child labour and alleged abuse by shein factories

It doesn’t say “need your help” it says “need your help washing with soft detergent the first time to make the goods softer” which makes sense. Sweatshops have existed for ages. Paid by piece not by hours worked. Alot of clothing come from the US and other countries that are from sweatshops . Shein is just one of many that are out there. As someone who is poor (I live off of welfare, it sucks and I'd work if I could - but that's not really the point). I am on the heavier side and it's not because of me eating too much, I have some illnessess and organs that don't work as they should and therefore have to take medications (that aren't cheap either, of course). It's very difficult to find clothes my size in thrift stores in the country I live in, it's difficult to find in stores like H&M too, because it's not flattering on me and doesn't fit properly. I'm basically just wearing high waisted yoga pants/workout leggings, a long shirt of some kind, ill-fitted sports bras (given up on regular ones) and a hoodie/sweater. Going on a social event where one would want to "glam up"? Pfft, I have to be really creative with what I have and still stick out from the crowd, which I'm already terrified of because of my weight. TL;DR: Thrift stores and such are great, but sometimes it's basically mission impossible to find the right size and it's embarrassing and heartbreaking (for me personally).
