Why such a dark and eerie song is the main menu theme for a kids game is anyone's guess

*The smell of burning oil and metal is what greets you as you awaken from a wreck, your vehicle broken and shredded to almost nothing.. You can hear other cars running, and the sound seems to get closer as you realize that your trapped in the seat, the top of the vehicle pushed inwards.. Then the roar of the other cars suddenly becomes deafening as you see the 16 other cars coming straight at you, unflinching as they closed in on you. Your eyes close as the searing pain of yet another wreck push your body to it's limits and you black out, without even a moment to think of what had happened. Welcome to Destruction Derby 2, folks.*

I heard it as a kid and it was the most calming music I had ever listened to. I'd leave the menu open until the demo played just to let the music ride while I layed on my floor or in the bed. Then years later when I heard songs like P.O.D. Youth of the Nation, it just set a standard for me for how I viewed the world, the music, life in general. My whole life was a direct reflection of how well these early games created an opportunity for me to imagine whatever It was I wanted my life to be like instead of believing it had to be what it was

Everything was perfectly imperfect. Now everything's imperfectly imperfect. We were so excited about games being "more realistic", only to eventually realize that we didn't want them to "be realistic". We wanted them to not be because it was the unrealistic aspect of them that allowed us to actually escape into them. Every element of the game was created - genuinely created - by someone who felt things in their pursuit of creating it. The music, the intro, the 3D elements and the innovation needed to memic what realism FELT like, not to actually recreate real things in a format for what they were meant to be or look like. All the feeling went away. Nobody hand-makes chairs or toys or wallpapers, or fabrics, appliances, or foods, nothing. It's all made by machine and made to look like the real thing. I'm convinced all foods - candies and natural-looking fruits are all almost 90% artificial if not more and we haven't caught on yet. We need to bring back asbestos in walls, genuine hardwood and wood paneling, non-led lighting, tube technology in tv and radio, analog devices, and unfabricated relationships. The internet has ruined all of us

I remember getting this as a kid off the coattails of ‘Destruction Derby’. It went from upbeat 90’s techno in the first game to some weird drone rock in the second. I hated DD2 as a kid, didn’t seem to have a direction. I think they were trying to emulate KoRn for some reason as NuMetal and NuPunk were big at the time. And ‘Spawn’ comic book aesthetic that you had on a load of album covers. I think it killed the franchise off to be honest, it was a good game but the tone-shift didn’t help the fans of the first game. It can be done like ‘Silent Hill 4’ or ‘Wipeout3’ but maybe they should have taken inspiration from ‘Linkin Park’s music to bridge the gap between the first and second games. The game was crazy and the music didn’t reflect that I think. It was a weird track though, had this been a ‘Twisted Metal’ it would have fit right in.
