This Drone Footage Video captures the disused RAF Newton.
Royal Air Force station Newton or more simply RAF Newton (ICAO: EGXN) is a former Royal Air Force station located 7 miles (11 km) east of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and 10.7 miles (17.2 km) south-west of Newark-on-Trent, England
It was used briefly as a bomber base for squadrons to re-equip after the Battle of France and then as a flying training school during the Second World War and beyond until 2000.
Built in 1939, Newton was assigned to No 1 Group in June 1940. On 3 July 1940 No. 103 Squadron RAF moved from RAF Honington with their Fairey Battles before changing to the Vickers Wellington IC in October 1940. On 11 July 1941 the squadron moved to RAF Elsham Wolds, also on 3 July 1940 (the same date when 103 Squadron arrived) No. 150 Squadron RAF arrived from RAF Stradishall again initially with the Battle before changing to Wellington IA during October 1940 however later in the month the Wellington IC was introduced to the squadron. The squadron left on 10 July 1941 going to RAF Snaith.
Newton then became a training base, and for the next five years between July 1941 and December 1946 No. 16 (Polish) Service Flying Training School provided basic and advanced training for Polish airmen serving with the RAF, using RAF Tollerton as a satellite landing ground.
The station badge featured the Polish Eagle holding a flaming torch in each talon with the motto "Docemus et Discimus" which translates as "We teach and we learn", reflecting the Polish training role in the Second World War.
The station had also become the home of the newly formed Nottingham University College Air Squadron in 1941, providing newly trained pilots for the RAF. During the 1960s Newton was home to an Air Experience Flight of de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk aircraft which were used by local squadrons of the Air Training Corps. The East Midlands University Air Squadron continued flying at Newton, with Scottish Aviation Bulldog aircraft, until moving its flying activities to RAF Cranwell in 2001. In the latter years, civilian-operated Slingsby Fireflies were also based at Newton for basic military training on behalf of RAF Cranwell.
The RAF Newton site is, according to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), contaminated with Radium. The contamination comes from Radium that was used to coat the dials of aircraft and other equipment so that they could be seen in the dark. It was in scrap burned and dumped in the 1940s and 1950s and remains radioactive for thousands of years.
Today the site is a private industrial estate and the buildings are being converted into offices and storage space. The old control tower still stands and is being renovated into offices; the grass airfield has reverted to agriculture with some RAF planes still there for the eye to see. Nottinghamshire Police use parts of the site for public order, a method of entry and big police dog training.
The abandoned houses on the base were used to film scenes from the film This is England. It has also been used for the television series Robot Wars after it transferred to the commercial UK channel Five.
The site is located within Nottingham's Green Belt.
Now the site features over 550 new homes.

First went there as an Air Cadet in March 1983 to do a week long Gliding Course at Syerston. Course got snowed out but got to look around the Missile Museum in 4 Hanger which was the RAF's Missile Technical training school (Did Engineer training on Martel, Firestreak, Red Top and Bloodhound Missiles). All of the missiles in the museum ended up at RAF Museum Cosford. Went back there in 1986 to learn how to fix Bloodhound Mk2 missiles.

Newton has special memories for me as I was fortunate enough to learn to fly in the UAS from 69-71, while at Loughborough. It gave me the start I needed in flying, and after 10 years in engineering, I gained my ATPL , and achieved my dream in flying…..DC3, Viscount, DC9, Fk100, 737, A320. I can still see the spot between the hangars adjacent to the Tower where we often parked, and the care needed taxying from the tarmac onto the grass.

I did my instructor training there in the 80's; at the time it was the RAF police training and dog handling school, as well as the School of Education. I did Trade Instructional Techniques and was therefore a TIT, if I had done the other course I would have been a GIT (Ground Instructional Techniques)... When I returned to the squadron I was on, I found myself training newly arrived guys on aircraft servicing and handling, which as an avionics tradesman made a change from my normal work! It was also a passport to a nice career in Saudi Arabia...

@@JakeSilvester Don't expect much... It was a Training camp in its later years... I had the good fortune to be stationed there. 1969-70, working in Station Workshops and later, Training Aids development workshop. The "Bunker" behind Station HQ, was actually the Sports Store... from which one could borrow Sports Equipment.

I did a couple of Air Experience flights at RAF Newton in Chipmunks way back in 1970 when I was a cadet. The flying list was always full of names seconds after it was posted it was so popular. It's a shame to see it looking a mess.

I went there in about 1961 or 1962 from Worksop, with my school's Combined Cadet Force for such flights in Chippies. It was a bustling training base then I think, immaculately kept, everything spick and span! First time I ever flew in a light aircraft and did aerobatics with the pilot who I think was with a University Air Squadron. The flying bug bit then and I have flown regularly in my own aircraft ever since!

Shame all these old RAF bases are closing down. Paying for the F35 me thinks! I was at Newton I think in 1988 as an air cadet trying to get go solo on a powered glider. Plenty of going around the circuit with an instructor. Weather turned bad. So never managed to go solo.

A civilian gliding club spent ages negotiating with the land agents once Newton was shut. They just stalled and stalled. They gave one reason was due to aircraft being burnt there and polluting the soil. These aircraft had luminous dials that were radio active. If it was that dangerous why did they allow a local farmer keep sheep on the airfield? Went to the last family day and had some good aircraft displayed. One group was a USAF aircraft. Just like the yanks in WW2 they got the wrong airfield and displayed at Langar. Oops, it a parachute airfield so hope no one was dangling in a parachute as they tore across that airfield 🤭

I flew from Newton as a cadet in the early 1970s. I have strong memories of sitting in the building to the right of the ATC tower, waiting for my turn in. Chipmunk. I also held there for a few weeks as a young RAF officer in 1977. I was there again from 1989-1992 as a flying instructor on East Midlands UAS and was briefly based there again in 1998 as a police helicopter pilot. Any radioactivity is low level and comes from the radioactive luminous paints used in aircraft instruments. I understand that quite a number of old aircraft were burned on a dump on the airfield after WW2 and it originates from that time.
