A man recently posted a text conversation of him lying to a girl about his political beliefs in an attempt to impress her. The internet mocked him for not standing up for his beliefs, which led me to look into how often this happens. To my surprise, not only is this common, but it has coined a nickname, “woke fishing”. Let’s talk about it.

The last dating app date I went on was with a guy who said he was center right, but was very liberal. My profile said I was ultra conservative and a strong Christian. It was a horrible date. I insisted on paying for myself because I knew the date was over the moment I left my seat. He said he had to use the restroom, and paid for my half too. Then when I said I hope he had a good night but I did not think we would work out, he said okay and then asked if I wanted to go back to his place. I gave him a funny look and said no. He told me he paid for my dinner and I should not be playing around online if I didn't really want to date. I told him I didn't want to date *him* and walked quickly to my car. I decided apps were not working because even when you put down that you are a strong Christian, you still have to make it clear what that means because the world has no values attached to the label anymore.

That's why the who pays for dinner on a first date question always stumps me. As a conservative woman who believes in traditional gender roles, I would expect the man to pay for the date. However, in todays world, that doesn't mean what it used to mean. There's an expectation nowadays that if the man pays for the date, the woman gives him sex in return. Of course as a Christian woman, that puts me in a bit of a dilemma. There's no way I'm having sex before marriage, so now I have no choice but to go halves. I think when dating changed from something you do with marriage in mind, to something you just do for fun with no commitment, that is when this became a problem.

I need a skit of two conservatives trying to out-woke each other after having started dating by woke-fishing to get laid. It gets more woke than either of them are comfortable with, spiraling out of control until one of them breaks and admits to everything. Met my husband on Catholic Match. They made you list out ALL of your views on your profile, including views on certain church teachings, your view on social issues, and party affiliation. The top recommended profiles would be those whose views aligned the most with yours. Obviously, you could lie about all those things, but it made meeting my husband so much easier. I never had to sit down and ask him about his view on x, y, or z, because I already knew what it was. And the site showed our viewpoints were 96% compatible. Catholic Match certainly isn’t for everyone, but more dating sites should have an option like this.

When I met my now husband on Tinder, a few weeks into the relationship I asked him to take a politics quiz. I'm in a major city, and all of my friends were liberal. I really liked this guy and knew I couldn't continue if our values didn't match up. He took 3 HOURS to get back to me. Our conversations never had that much lag unless he was at church. He was clear the first night we matched he had to go to bed since he had church in the morning, which was a great start. But at the time the conversations were only based on jokes and 'fun' topic, nothing serious. Anyways after the long pause he 'came out' as a republican. He was typing a whole paragraph explaining how much he liked me and how he wouldn't push his view on me or anything. I told him nothing to worry about, that I was also a republican, and was so nervous he wouldn't share my views. We laugh about it now because I guess I didn't know the optics. I was 'grew up religious' but hadn't been to church in years, vegetarian, college grad with an environmental background, living with 2 guys friends, who were very outwardly democrats. Girls need to make it clear too, very early on about their morals!

I have been married for 15 years - 10 years into the marriage my husband core values changed dramatically and it got to a point I wasn’t sure if our relationship would survive. Core values are so important in a relationship and being honest up front is very important. Things changed and he came back to most of the core values we both believed in after some time and on his own. I found that even in friendships if the core values changes it is hard to keep them as an intimate relationship because you both can no longer be your true self on some level. It’s ok and people change. When it’s a marriage partner that’s a whole different thing, especially if you value marriage as something you do for life.

Sorry this happened in your marriage but glad he came around. You’re right about this happening in friendships too, apart from I was the one who changed. I used to hang out with an ultra woke crowd because I admittedly was very left wing in university. It was literally just something caused by attending university. Then I graduated and reverted back to my original politics (that being centre right), so a lot more conservative than the people I hung out with. I didn’t become “far right” like they claimed but ultimately that was their perception. I just stopped hanging out with them because they began to treat me differently. It’s sad because I still have a very woke friend but she doesn’t care about my political beliefs and vice versa. My other friends are either the same as me or apolitical. I’m lucky that my husband is mainly apolitical, he has grown to hate woke stuff as time has gone on. He still doesn’t label himself politically though. Although I am fundamentally ideologically different to when we met. This is something he doesn’t mind and actually prefers. Although, it would be super hard to deal with if your spouse suddenly went from being very conservative to very liberal or vice versa, if you had the same values when you married. Assuming one spouse still holds their original values of course. It would be incredibly difficult and might lead to divorce if your spouse then forces their new values onto you. Same thing goes with religion. I’ve always been religious (even when I was woke lol) and my husband is agnostic. I have never forced my beliefs on him and never will. If he suddenly converted to a random religion (let’s say Jehovah’s Witness) and started to force those beliefs on me, I would be very concerned and want to seek therapy, if it didn’t end in divorce that is!

You can't do it with your family because they just get annoyed with you and don't want to talk about politics. You can't do it in church because you'll just irritate people and then they'll complain about you to church leadership. Once upon a time, I was a college kid. It was 2016. There was a very cute girl who I wanted to date. In one of our first conversations, I told her about my friend who said that when he goes to college, he's going to stay close to home because everyone he knows who went out of state came back more liberal. I let out a hearty laugh, and I believe she did, too. Then, she asked, "What are your beliefs?" I was an awkward introvert and just kinda didn't really give an answer. Little did I know, the 18 year-old Indian girl I liked was big into Trump. While I did ask her out later, I did not get a date. Twas a missed opportunity. Learn from my mistakes, young ones, and be true to yourself when dating.

I used to put moderate on my dating app when I used to use it. I lean to the right more than the left, so choosing conservative would be more accurate. I ended up hanging out with a girl that is against the 2nd Amendment and she lost her shit when she found out I had a Ruger. Don't waste your or anyone else's time. Just be honest. Honestly, dating apps aren't worth it for the majority of men. Only if you're above average.

Great episode and I definitely get the point (about staying true to your viewpoints/beliefs and basically not beating around the bush in an attempt to get laid) but the reason I'd say I'm "moderate" wouldn't be cause i'm lying; it's cause I'm rarely on the extreme fringe of any political talking point, cause I purposely go out of my way to ignore the types of people who are (cause really... what constitutes how Right or Left-Of-Center you are in this day and age depends on the person you're talking to, and vice versa). Saying "moderate" is just another way of saying "if you're a fringe militant extremist with not even the slightest interest in reaching a consensus, I'm not interested. And yeah, by saying "moderate", I definitely mean i'm right-of-center. But it's certainly not an attempt to catfish some dupe of media hysteria. It's one thing to be Leftist; but someone who simply identifies as "left-of-center/moderate" at least tells me that there's some wiggle room in their belief/political system.

You're probably too picky and think more things are core issue than actually are. It happens biologically. It's one reason marrying young is so important. Marrying young means you can marry with core similarities but with other differences and then grow together. Once we're in our 30's that ability dies out, and it's harder to grow together or even FIND someone because we become more demanding and rigid.

Oh, this also applies to politicians whose views are available in the media too! 😱 I live in a small country in Europe, so it is relatively easy to meet politicians in random places. I met some politicians completely by accident - through mutual friends, or because we go to the same cafe, etc. In addition, I had the opportunity to meet people from different factions: from super conservative to the far left. Everyone, regardless of whether they were trying to date me or just talking to me, pretended to be much more moderate than they show in the media. It's as if they assumed in advance that women won't like the way they really are. Some even said things like: I like you, so I can have the same views as you, because I have a feeling that you won't agree with my party etc. Sad, huh? As you can see, this phenomenon does not only concern the US or only the conservatives. This is some kind of epidemic of hiding one's views from women, since it even affects active politicians. Regardless of whether they are on the left or right. Everyone pretends to be in the middle. Why? it doesn't make sense. Starting a relationship with a lie is not a good start.

I feel that since children are people too, then they have a say on how they identify, but trying to force them to work this stuff out before they are even teens is not good. whether you believe they are LGBTQ+ or you think that they shouldn’t be, I think it isn’t your decision as a parent to manipulate their lives. Children can be trans, straight, bi, queer, whatever. No shame in any of these things. I’d only help a child with gender-affirming care if they ask for it. I can’t decide if they need it. @navyseal4000 in my opinion hormone treatments are a good thing for teens to take in moderation. Humans, regardless of physical gender, have both male and female hormones (albeit unbalanced except in some cases) You already have hormones in your body, so including some more to balance it in another way is, in my opinion, fine for teens, especially if you have gender dysphoria and would mentally benefit from it. It's not really like introducing something new into your body since it already produces these chemicals. It's kind of like getting insulin if you don't have enough or getting a chemical response in your brain from exercising. Your body just gets more of these chemicals and can use them safely. Of course, I'm not a doctor, so obviously, I'm not an expert here, but the studies have shown that hormones and the like have a good mental health impact on trans people. As long as said person takes hormones in the healthy amount and is ok with it, then I think it is probably a good choice

I like the points Brett brings up. The title reminds me of an old 80s film very familiar to my Generation X - "A Sure Thing" with John Cusack. In the film, he experiences massive rejection at a northeastern college. His friend at a university in Southern California suggests he comes west to "score" with a blonde bikini model/student who the friend insists is a "sure thing". So, John's character travels across the country but along the way meets another student - a woman he gradually falls for during the trip. Once he gets to California, he is conflicted and stalls while voicing concerns to his friend about the "sure thing". His friend says "You have no morals", then John's character half-heartedly agrees to go for "cheap, meaningless sex" and attempts to "score" with the bikini model but backs out. His morals win over the movie, and he decides to go for the woman he had fallen for - a character played by Daphne Zaniga. One thing I would point out is that there really are people who are moderates. Senator Sinema is a moderate here in AZ. She switched from Democrat to Independent. The Republicans love her here in AZ because of her voting pattern, but she doesn't want to be Republican either. The definition of "liberal" versus "conservative" is subjective and changes over time. Many moderate conservative people would have been labeled liberal back in the 80s. Some on the far left actually consider Joe Biden conservative compared to Bernie Sanders. I agree with the principle. I am moderately conservative by today's definition and practicing Catholic. I am not a "strict" Catholic though. When I lived in Boulder, CO, I met a beautiful blonde woman on the hiking trail up Mt. Sanitas at the west side of Boulder. I saw her so many times over years we eventually met and greeted each other by name. She was an extreme mountain hiker and very beautiful. But like a lot of "Boulderites" she struck me as liberal and progressive but not overtly religious. Parallel to my hiking up that mountain, I also went to the Catholic Church every Sunday right near that trail head. I NEVER saw here in there even though she literally lived across the street. So, even though she most likely would have agreed to date me at the time, I just couldn't handle that I never saw her at Mass. So, I never asked her out and eventually moved away from Boulder to FL. Over there, I had more in common with the religious "Southern Belles" of the Bible Belt who are often well-educated, moderately conservative, career-oriented, and progressive but not "too liberal" per se. Here in Tempe, AZ, I just stay out of the dating scene completely and focus on my PhD and full-time job. I KNOW the local population is very young and mostly "woke". When I get done with the PhD I feel like moving back to FL or to a more conservative area to settle down - perhaps even the Midwest or maybe Texas. A good example is the alumni network of ND/SMC in the Midwest or East Coast with Catholic women who are in careers. If I went "woke" it would be much easier to meet women in Tempe, but I don't want to pretend at all - lol. I really am moderately conservative. I don't believe the election was "stolen" in 2020. There are conservative judges appointed by Trump who ruled it that way. But I supported healthcare reform due to my MPH background and revered John McCain for his "no" vote a few years ago to ban healthcare reform. I met him in Flagstaff, AZ as a teen - a great role model. However, like many conservative idealists I am against affirmative action. Moreover, as a Catholic I can't condone abortion - albeit there are gray areas in some cases for practicing Catholics who are physicians. I defer to them on those situations. Some of us really are moderately conservative.

There will always be some people who take a leap of faith, and put themselves in situations deep enough, where they have no way out, because being ignored is worse than being blamed. I think role models play a big part in inspiring confidence among others, and there have definitely not being a lot of good ones recently. If bad influences inflict deep enough scars that can take a long time to heal from, then it can be very hard to correct, rectify, and follow up on with something better.

As a man married for 25yrs in my 50s, I dated a few radical feminist vegans and a few very religious Jews (I'm Christian) and being coy about your principles will only waste time or wind up in a disaster. There are things that run too deep to reach a compromise to a point of a long term true partnership. There are core value differences that if not matched will never sustain the true partnership needed for a successful marriage. My wife and I differ on many things, but they are not deep and damaging issues, they are simply surface level preferences.

BC, studies have shown, and these studies were conducted many years ago before wokeness came about, that the best person for a man to marry is a woman who votes the same way he does. The same is true, vise versa, for a woman.

How do you even find anyone anymore? I'd never touch a dating app because of all the horror stories I've heard. However, I've always had problems trying to talk to people and have never been able to intentionally make friends. The handful of friends I've had throughout my life all came up to me and basically decided to socially adopt me. I've never been in a relationship, haven't even met anyone who I thought I could try to date. Sometimes it's hard to keep hoping that there's anyone out there who would like me. How do you find someone to be with when almost no one seems to be worth even talking to?

Plus, there isn't anybody around my area to talk to because they're all just crazy and/or not my type. It's extremely rare to find someone and I agree with you. What even is the "right person" when they all seem to be already taken?

I'm a 20 year old guy and I just watched this video as well as the second most recent post pertaining to Gen Z and the draft. The new "normal" for young men this year as well as the last five+ years have made me realize how lucky I am to have had a Major dad in the military who raised me to be a man. I don't care how normal it is to reject reality. I will serve if under orders whether I like it or not. I only say "if" because I do not qualify otherwise. However, I do work for the DoD as a civilian. So I'm at least trying to do my part to make sure our soldiers get home safe. As for this video, any guy who lies just to get some is a coward because if you don't believe in yourself and your morals, how do you expect anyone else to? This is a lot longer of a comment or damn novel at this point, but I just felt like I had to put this out there. Anyone who read this all the way through, here's a monkey for your prize.🐒

My sons tell me that when they were in school one of their friends pretended to believe in climate change in order to get a girl to go out with him. He didn't believe in it at all but my sons say it is pretty common for boys to do this kind of 'woke fishing' because many girls are fairly hysterical about the issue of climate change. Anyway, boys being boys his mates let it be known that he was lying and the girl immediately dumped him. The boy had to endure that and all his mates mocking him for months.

My best friend lost his chance on getting into a relationship. He has a good paying job where he's in a union with a good set of trade skills, he's very chill and he likes to game and collect. BUT, he shared his political views one day because he votes republican and believes in what he votes for, then gets dumped by the girl because they dont share the same political beliefs. I told my friend he dodged a bullet with that one but he felt hurt by it still. This is the current state of relationships sadly.

Unfortunately, freedom of speech and political expression particularly is very limited in professional environments if you lean a certain way. However, it’s historically been looked down upon to talk politics in a place of work anyway, so it’s not unprecedented that your political views be held under wraps at work. However, we’re not talking about work in this video. This video is about dating, relationship building. Relationships built on lies and uncertainties don’t last, so it is a bad idea to hide your beliefs or lie about them in this context.
