Tipping culture in America is officially out of control. If you haven't noticed, more and more stores are requesting tips at the end of a sale. The phenomenon has been labeled "tip creeping."

I went into a snooty coffee shop to buy a bottle of water on a hot day - the water bottles were in a cooler facing the customer, so I took one and offered the clerk a $5 bill. He informed me that their store was cashless and spun the iPad for me to use my credit card (or phone). The tip screen went up to 30% and I had to go through 3 sub-screens to select no tip. As I was doing this I could sense the clerk's attention - the guy who never touched the bottle of water. So I muttered, "It was self-service, so if anyone gets a tip, it should be myself!"

I had an encounter at a cashless restaurant a few weeks back because they were scared of CovAIDS infected dollars. I only pay for things in cash so I didn't have any credit cards. The bill was $15, and I offered the waiter $100 bill and to keep the change. Without delay he flat out rejected the money as if he was sure to catch The CovAIDS from it. A few mins passed, and had the audacity to come back to the table and tell me this would come out of his paycheck. I gave him one last opportunity to take the $100 and still turned it down. Who turns down an $85 / 475% tip?!?!? BTW, I left $20 on the table and walked out as they were calling the cops.

I know tipping in the US is customary, expected and in a way required. I've been on holiday to the US twice and tried my best to tip appropriately. When I went to the US I was young, skint on a very tight budget but tried my best. However there was one moment which took the piss. My wife got a tea (or English breakfast tea as you call it) from take-away coffee shop. The young girl behind the counter snatched a paper cup, filled it with hot water, plonked it on the counter and dropped a tea bag in. She snatched the $10 my wife was holding out, opened the till, got the $5.50 something change and dropped it straight in to her tip jar. I begrudge paying a tip for 10 seconds work but we would have done something. But I'm not playing about 110% tip on the worse service I've had in my life. My wife made her take her change back out the jar and give it to her.

McDonalds will walk your food out to you these days and you don't tip them. 95% of the time when I go to a restaurant that's all I require from my waitress, just bring me my food. Maybe they refill my water once....but all of a sudden, depending on the cost of the food, you have to tip $10+ dollars on top of already overpriced food...when all the waitress did was the same thing the McDonalds worker did...brought me my food. I also think it's stupid that the price of the food is largely what determines the price of the tip...since it's a percentage of the bill. When I go to a "cheaper" restaurant and only need to tip $5 or something but then go to a more expensive restaurant that same tip for the same service is now $15 only because the food is more expensive is stupid.
@CrossRoadsOfTime
@CrossRoadsOfTime Жыл бұрын
@@PreppinShootinLivin I totally agree with this and even in situations where I think a tip is warranted I'm considering how much did they do for me, not what the bill comes to. As really if I go to the same place and one time order the chicken meal then the next day order the Steak meal, I shouldn't be expected to pay a larger tip the 2nd time when the server didn't do anything different, I can understand the steak costing more, and the bill being higher due to that. But since the server did not have to do anything different at all, nor did they actually do anything different they aren't getting a bigger tip.

I'm from Europe and in my country, tipping is a gift. It's a reward for being extra nice to the customer or doing a really good job. Or it's a consolation price for when you deliver food and have to go through rough weather or if you work on "holiday" like valentine's, christmas or even something like easter. Some people will tip workers who have night shifts for putting up with their tired ass pulling up at 3am for a greasy burger and some coffee. But tipping is never expected! People get paid a normal wage and do their jobs. Here we don't have to fake extreme happiness to the customer or bend over backwards just to get that tip. No one has to fear not being able to have food on the table for their children, or at least not more than the other people. Tipping has gone out of hand in America. I know someone who's friend went to New York and got cursed out of the store because they didn't tip. This person was called greedy and Mr Scrooge. Great way to never get a tip again. Brett I have to disagree, paying people a living wage will not break America and it will benefit everyone. Customer, workers and marginalized groups. And I disagree that some jobs should have a tipping culture. No. You're a waitress, all you do is bring me my food. Sure, it's tough work but I can imagine that being the cook is just as touch if not more. Just get rid of "mandatory" tipping and pay people 15$ per hour. Have tips be what they're supposed to be, a gift for doing an excellent job!

I only tip before I get my food when I pay if I am a regular to a place and I know it's good. And another solution is to tip with cash instead of on your card when you pay. You also control where the tip goes that way if there is one person you liked or was really nice and a hard worker. When the tip is electronic they usually split it with everyone on the clock. Of course that can also be dependent on the place though

@greatestboop6758 unfortunately many places that clame to share tips don't actually tip the staff properly. As none of the staff see what is actually accumulated they are only given a small amount of it while owners keep the rest. I am sorry to say I have seen this in many places especially in the US. So even when leaving a cash tip it is important to hand it directly to the individual you wish to receve it. And don't just leave it on the table letting the person know it's for them as other workers/people will scoop up the tip and your intended recipient will not get anything. I had to chew out a shitty waitress who didn't even Finnish serving us,and served us the wrong thing to start, because after the Server changed and we had proper service the new server was busy seating someone when we left. We showed her that we left her a tip. Just as we said this the shitty server rushed over and placed the tip in her personal pocket... not the tip pocket in her apron. I know the owner personally so called her up to come deal with the issue. As she arrived I confronted the first server about her actions. She flat out denied doing it. The owner came up behind her and shocked her by telling her to empty her pickets or leave emediatly. The Server was upset but didn't want to be dismissed. So reluctantly pulled out the money I had left for the other server. The owner was mortified by this and my experiance with poor service. I was not the only one to complain about that peticular server. She was told that she was allowed to Finnish her shift but was not to come in for her next shift because the owner was considering letting her go.

What she's talking about, and the point you are missing is, tipping for non services is out of control. The only thing I don't agree with is the federal server minimum wage. I've ran restaurants that paid their servers better base wages and consistently we had better servers because they knew at least they would make a certain amount. But that's not the customers issues, and obviously servers could still tip them.

I think the worst request for a tip I’ve had was at a concert. After paying 28 dollars for 2 tall boys for my girlfriend and I the person at the beer stand asked me to look at the screen as it requested a tip. I felt no shame for not tipping. There is absolutely no reason to tip someone for pulling 2 beer cans out of a fridge for me and cracking them. Especially after charging 14 per beer

Tipping culture is one of the reasons I left US, had one time a terrible waiter came chasing after me because I did not want to tip them. Many of my friends do not want to travel to US anymore because of tipping. Everything is pretty much 20% more expensive there for less “service”. And I bet the country would be a lot better with less stress, time and energy wasted if we got rid of this “system” and get back the culture to tip only if you really wanted to. Nobody should be entitled to a tip doing your job. Many other countries are doing fine without this.

That falls under their employer's responsibility. If the worker needs to earn more money, then they need to get a better job. My local town made a city ordinance to ban companies like fat food restaurants and non tipping stores from adding a 10 to 15% tip to your order. This all went down after a local grocery store jumped on the tip wagon and added a 10% stocking fee. This fee was said to help pay employees during covid as they were sopping and doing curbside drop off. Then they waited till you loaded your car then they would spray down the wagon and go back indoors. The city didn't do anything during covid times or as long as they provided the curbside drop off. Once they stopped that service they renamed this tip to service fee to keep a clean store! The store owner saw this as another way to make money with no effort.

We’re worried about the cashier seeing we didn’t tip them for just existing and doing their job and then spitting (or worse) in our food in retaliation. A lot of these places have you pay before they bring you the items so they know and have time to act inappropriately. And with the pizza guy example, it’s not just no tip anymore - if they don’t deem your tip worthy of their next level delivery skills, even if it’s 25% on top of the delivery charge, they might still retaliate. I just don’t give them my business anymore.

@jackieruso6493
@jackieruso6493 2 ай бұрын
Well, as a former DD driver who also delivers for Spark and Grubhub let me tell you why you should tip your drivers and then you will understand why they do and you should as well. The fees you pay for your food to be delivered does not go to the driver like most people think it automatically does. It goes to these food delivery apps like Door Dash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, Instacart, etc after the merchant (restaurant/store) gets paid. This is because the restaurants and stores have to pay a 20% commission fee to these apps. So to make up for these costs, the prices for the food are more expensive on these apps even with the deals and promotions they have. Or, they take the tips from the drivers...sometimes they do both. With that being said, the driver only gets a small portion of the tip or no tip at all (and that can happen even if the customer provides a tip). This is a huge disadvantage to the driver because these restaurants and stores don't have to pay for a car, car insurance, gas, maintenance costs, or an employee to deliver the food. We the drivers do that with our own vehicles and therefore are putting more wear and tear on them. Our risk for an accident goes way up which makes our auto insurance rates skyrocket or we get dropped from our policy altogether. We are also putting more money from our own pockets into our gas tanks when doing these deliveries. Sometimes, we get orders that are 9.00$ for 11 miles and if we get orders where the miles exceed the pay out then most drivers won't deliver your food for the reasons I just stated and thos are the orders without the tip. Also most people don't carry cash on them like they used to. So there's been a lot of times where drivers were promised a cash tip when delivering the food and they never received one. Hopefully, you now understand why it's better to tip and pre-tip ahead of time when using these food and grocery delivery platforms.

As a former DD driver let me tell you this. As long as tipping remains even remotely optional the driver, wait staff, etc will not be paid a decent wage. I got a job at a Japanese restaurant and was running around like crazy trying to help all the customers because the other girls weren’t doing their jobs. A lot of people noticed and were putting tips in the jar just for me because I was brand new and not getting any help or proper training but still going out of my way for the customers. At the end of my shift, the other girls took the tip jar in the back to count it and I waited patiently for them to return with my share, and after 30 minutes went to go find out why they hadn’t returned only to find out that they had already left… without all the tips. I called the owner of the business since he was the one who hired me to tell him what happened and he said new employees don’t get tips for two months! We weren’t getting paid minimum wage because of tips yet I’m supposed to work for two freaking months without a single dollar even though the customers were tipping me directly for doing everything myself on my very first day? I was never told by anyone about that so I was upset that they basically took advantage of me and that my coworkers intentionally screwed me over, so I quit on the spot. The owner was pissed and started yelling at me and I finally just hung up on him. @@claven3608 that is not correct. This "forced tipping" happens only here in the US, while restaurants do perfectly well everywhere in the world by paying their employees a decent salary. Just travel to Spain, France, Italy, or Germany to compare better prices, better service, and better food overall. If a restaurant cannot survive because it cannot make a profit, it must change its business model, location, or close doors for good. But you cannot pretend the customer to pay 18%, 20%, 25% of the bill when usually service sucks. I have hired restaurants for groups during many years all over the world; sometimes you get one waiter for a 12 people table and yet you have to pay a 20% on top of the menu, plus taxes. In many occasions you are leaving a $200 tip for a 1-hour service. That is ridiculous. Don't tell me a waiter needs to make $100-200 per hour for s restaurant to survive. 100% agree with you Brett! I’ve also worked in the service industry among others. My philosophy has always been that “Tips” and “Tipping” should always be 100% voluntary. The amount tipped should always be relative to the additional quality of service or good provided. Otherwise, tipping and the reasons behind it, loose all meaning and it simply becomes nothing more than a mere additional tax. As you said, it’s not food-service staffs fault that they aren’t paid a living wage for their work by their employer. It’s the employer’s, and by extension, the lobbyist's and government’s fault. However, food-service workers are not being forced to stay where they are and work against their will. They are fully choosing to work in food-service and to play the tipping game. I’ve had many people over the years argue with me over this. However, in truth, tipping should only be done when either: 1) A person is providing a service that is NON-STANDARD to the job or an experience and that is OUTSIDE THE NORM. This means going above and beyond the basic minimum requirements and expectations of their job in order to provide a genuinely better experience to the customer. Ex: providing (x) faster, providing (x) correctly the first time, giving a customer in-depth and comprehensive information, giving the customer insider info and discounts, providing the customer with a hassle-free experience, and/or doing something for the customer, etc. 2) A person is creating a good/product and provides the customer with an exceptional, higher-quality version of that good/product, that is NON-STANDARD when compared to the rest of their inventory and/or when compared to similar artists work. All the while charging you nothing more for that higher quality. Ex: higher quantity of (x) item(s), (x) item is cleaner/more durable/more precise/more detailed, food item is tastier/healthier, etc. So then, why do we actually have a tipping system and why do we tip? Well, when done correctly, tips help incentivize employees (and by extension, businesses) to work harder for their customers attention. Because in the business world (The Capitalistic Ideal), customers speak with their wallets. Only those employees who consistently work hard and have a genuine drive to be better and do better will ideally earn those tips. And these high-performing employees have a positive impact and affect on the business and its reputation as a whole. All the while, any poor performing employees who don’t care and don’t do good work, will be driven out. It’s a version of “work natural selection” where only the best employees and businesses will do well and stay afloat. However, I agree wholeheartedly that nowadays there are far too many people who are hella entitled and expect a tip (a handout) for simply existing and for not doing any of the work to earn it. The worst culprits of all, are those scummy businesses who have the audacity to force their customers to do all of the work for said service or good/product, and in the end expect said customer to tip the business for the privilege of utilizing them.

@@cincydooley I tell all my clients tips are always appreciated but never expected. If someone owned a restaurant and set the food prices I’d still tip, even if they happened to be the one serving me. There may be some debate over if an owner should get tipped or not but the point of my comment is people are even becoming tired of tipping for services they used to happily tip for.

I've been a professional server in the Restaurant industry for the past 25 years. Tipping used to be a "reward" from customer to server for going beyond the call of duty (which is just serving the order). For smiling, for being there on a moment's notice, for answering all sorts of questions, for making small-talk, for giving compliments, for giving directions, for giving information and a myriad other things that a customer might need. Tipping, also used to be an incentive for a server to do all that. Now... it's become an excuse for employers to pay the kitchen staff less having them claim a "cut" from the server's tips... or even further... Retail stores, justifying a low salary with the promise of "tips", creating this entitlement for which the new generation of minimum wage workers has really no fault of their own. Sadly, they don't know any better.

I agree with you. I do enjoy when people go beyond for their customers. Texas and Oklahoma is the only states I seen servers actually talk to a customer for minutes on end. One of the first restaurants I ate at with my partner, we had a server actually sit across from us and talk to us. We were shocked. He stated that it was slow, so he had some time, and that he was almost done with his shift. It was interesting to talk to a server like that. I also met quite a few other servers who would make small talk with my partner and I. It is nice to get those type of workers who do not mind interacting with customers.

Thanks for this! I’m getting sick of it. They even wanted a tip at my local retail liquor store. Retail! Also, the amounts that are preset on those machines keeps going up - sometimes 15% isn’t even an option, well aside from the custom option. But obviously, the implication is anything less than 20% is cheap. Whatever. Somebody is actually programming those machines - I wonder how those people got so out of touch with their customers? I’m not tipping 20% unless the service was truly exceptional. I guess I’m cheap.

I absolutely agree with you wholeheartedly… I am almost 61 years old and tipping from when I was an adolescent until now is a complete joke… And yes, I think it’s quite rude that they stick it on an iPad screen turn towards you in a Starbucks, where everybody in line can sit and watch whether you tip or not… I believe the correct word is Bullshit 💩

It's a little sad.

What did you actually do, besides putting my donut in a bag, warrant a tip? She just looked at me. I pressed no tip.

I am from a time when a tip was a gratitude not a requirement. The standard was 5% for basic service with a good attitude, 10% for a good job with no empty cups on a normal day, and a good attitude. 20% only happened when the person was very good at the job and made the experience enjoyable. there were times when the tip went up from there as the situation warranted, but 20 % was usually the top. Now if I walk in and it feels like I am bothering the staff by being there then I will not tip and feel no guilt for it. That applies mostly to restaurant folks. Other services are subject to the situation. If the restaurant automatically puts a "Gratuity" on a check it becomes something completely different. As a side not, my state has a minimum wage of 13.00 plus depending on where you are at in the state, so they are getting almost as much as I make.

As an aussie I struggled with tipping on my first time to the usa years ago as we do not do it. I expected exceptional service for there to be a tip. I recall speaking to a waitress who did a great job and was so attentive that I tipped her a lot and she told me something that shocked me. I was told that everyone from the manger to the dish washer shared in the tip provided. This is crazy. A service industry needs to be exactly that.

It used to mostly be 10-20% for sit down food services because they made under minimum wage. But now a days they want 15-20%+ tips on every single service even with those who make a good wage. It's ridiculous. It again took off during Covid because people felt bad since a lot of people were out of a job for awhile.

I was at the mall and I was really thirsty so I decided I’d go and get a drink. I go to a little shop that sells slushies and bottled drinks and I ask the man if I could have a sprite and he was like : “Sure the drinks are in the fridge over there.” I go walk over and grab the drink out of the fridge while the man just stood there and watched me. Then I went up to the counter while the man was ringing up the cost and then he turns around his stupid iPad and asks me for a tip. Like no you did nothing!!

Wait. You work at the mall? I don't know why people are selfish and won't tell you this but if you're a mall employee, you get an employee discount, anywhere at your specific mall. We even got a large soda for a dollar from Cinabbon, as long as we were mall employees, but it applies in places like Subway (eat fresh), shoe store, and of course Cinnabon. At least that was back in my days, not that many years ago. You should ask.

Hey! Former Starbucks barista here. Your decision not to tip was completely valid! You're never obligated to. I just wanted to let you know - your tip is split between all of the baristas and shift managers. It won't go only to the cashier. So, your tip will go to the entire team that works on your order! Also, I'm appalled at the idea of them making your order last to make a point. That's horrific service. I've always been so incredibly grateful when I receive tips, because it is something I have not ever expected of customers. Again, it is no one's obligation to tip.

I worked as a barista. Let me just say that I agree, if we don’t make you something from scratch and expect you to make your own coffee, there’s absolutely no reason to leave a dollar or two tip. Even I worked at a fancy coffee shop where we made everything from scratch for the customer, and I was fine not being tipped because realistically, a 3 minute service doesn’t require a 2 dollar tip. I also want to add that even in restaurants it’s getting crazy nowadays with the tipping. Went to a cozy brunch place and the server said there’s an automatic 15% tip on the bill, and then when she brought our bill she proceeded to turn the tablet and asked for more tips…. So already being tipped and then asking for more is ridiculous. The tip would have cost me the price of one of the dishes.

I went to a place that automatically added a 10% tip no notification by staff or sign saying that it is added. Went to pay my bill after eating and found out and I made a fuss yes it was about $3 but what if I just had the exact amount for the food and now you are charging me more than I had expected. Not only did my loud voice asking to speak to management who threatened to call the police which was fine as I said I would sue them for not clearly providing the cost before consumption tacking on fees illegally told them my lawyer will have a field day and I can't wait to count my money. They let me pay the cost without the tip and I went to my table and picked up the $5 dollars tip I left there. Yes I tipped but I don't like them just automatically adding it.
