Owning a dive shop, or any other small retail business, is tough. It's a wonder small retailers have any sense of humor at all. You should hang around your LDS one day and just watch what goes on - or how about offering to help out for a day. You could clean up, straighten shelves, answer the phone or a number of other jobs. You'd learn a lot about scuba, gain some points with your local store owner and really see what he goes through in a typical day. I'd like to think that most store owners are knowledgeable. They may not have the years of experience I do but they know a lot. Keeping a sense of humor is the hard part. I was lucky. I had good people working with me, the store was popular so I didn't have to worry too much about money and I have a very optimistic attitude anyway. I looked at every day as an opportunity to learn, even if I learned something I didn't want to know. Thanks for watching and for your comment. You've given me an idea for another Tech Tip. Alec

Alec Peirce Scuba at my local scuba shop I was told that dry snorkels don’t have a drag under water. That’s not the case according to the articles written by professionals. I like your videos, very informative. I watched one with my wife about fins. The other days I offered her to get a split fin and she said no because you mentioned in your video that it is not that good. :)

Also the boots make a great carrying case, useful for packaging when traveling. I keep my gloves, the computer, a GoPro, a swimsuit and occasionally my mask in there. And the boots are only size 10 :-) Thanks for another brilliant video Alec!

Alec, I used to make most of my dives from boats until I recently arrived in Okinawa, here you can dive from dozens of locations from shore but, I had to buy new boots that most people use here with a 1/2 inch felt on the bottom. This is to protect from sharp coral/rock or sea urchins. Love the videos, keep them coming!!

Alec, your advice to try on boots before buying is spot on, and buying from your local dive store rather than online is essential. I have two sets of boots: 6.5mm Aqua~Lung SuperZip Ergo boots in size 12, and 8mm XS Scuba Thug Boots in size 11. One would think the size 12 boots would be larger than the size 11 boots, but that's not the case; Aqua~Lung's sizes and XS Scuba's sizes are not equivalent. Had I not tried them on in the store, I would have been playing around with return shipping and chasing correct sizes.

Great tips. I like a middle of the road boot with rubber protection on the back and front of the boot, medium thickness sole, 5mm, and zip up side. I went with 5mm. Worked in both cold water and warm water and never had any issues. In fact, I like the colder weather style since you have extra protection and don't have to worry about using the boots on any water excursion on a cruise ship. Great on the beach, snorkling, and scuba diving and so much better than a target water shoe. Going to have to replace my 5mm neosport boots here in about another year or two. It would still work for scuba but I've worn down the tread on the bottom and don't want to have a slick boot on a scuba boat. Made me laugh on the white feet comment. So true! My only advice for people just buying is don't buy a boot with a high ankle and no zipper. They can still be used but when you take them off wet it is harder to take off and I've came close 2-3 times of having a boot go flying across a boat or back into the ocean when it finally released.

Boots to hoods are great to have. A macho 12” Sea Hawk would go well with those 7mm boots! If you don’t wear boots with boot fins you will get blisters. I use them fixing pools. Yes I have that tan Lol. Thank you Mr. Alec!

Good day Alec from U.K............ I have noticed that Wind surfers and canoeist tend to go for the more flexible 3mm boot and wet suits but the diver's go for 6mm .......... just saying and taking part also subscribed your great forum .............

windsurfers (which I am also) don't go under water at depth so you don't need as thick a boot/wetsuit - neoprene compressed down as you dive... you also need to feel the board underneath your feet which is the reason while I personally go barefoot (about half people do) even though I use a 5mm windsurfing in 55-60deg water (the wind factor is more an issue).

they are overkill and travelling with them is such a pain but they are really lazy fins. they get so much power behind them that all you need to do is kick once and that equals 3-4 kicks on regular fins

This little tiny velcro is critical for preventing the zipper from getting undone. I had to stitch some to my 5mm dive boots to solve the issue :)

My Lynx is a 5mm semi dry has a seal skin on the cuff that's supposed to help stop water from moving. Not sure if it's as effective as waterproof claim. I'd be interested to see a vintage evolution of the wetsuit Ike the introduction of titanium etc.

Hi Alec great informative video as always all this talk of boots brings a question to mind. Reduced mobility divers I suffered an accident in which I broke my leg in 15 places last year and as a result have permanent damage I could possibly loose the use of my ankle making it impossible to fin efficiently is there any advice you could give or even a tech tip on products available. There's not much available commercially. I have helped many divers with reduced mobility over the years. I've designed boots and fins for guys who have lots a leg or lost the use of a leg, or both. Every case is different. Work with your LDS. Hopefully the guy is sympathetic and knowledgeable and will help you. Alec

There's no difference between buying a package and buying separately, other than price. It's quite common for a manufacturer or even a dealer to put together what he considers a good package at a lower price. They hope of course to encourage you to buy a complete set at once instead of over a longer time. Brand name, warranty, availability of service and of course, will the set-up do what you want it for. When you mention prices of things in your videos - do you always use Canadian Dollars - and the prices that you would expect to find in Canada? This is something I always wondered about.

I am very familiar with the prices of gear in the US and of course Canada. There's very little difference between them other than a few specific items. Certainly once you convert the currency and figure in something for shipping, the difference is often not worth mentioning. Many Canadians are stuck in the old 70's and 80's idea that everything is cheaper in the US. NOPE!! You have to be very careful to check before you buy - not forgetting the exchange and the cost of shipping. Gas is a little cheaper in the US; booze is a lot cheaper; cigarettes; etc. Actually gas is not that much cheaper. Don't forget that the US gallon is smaller than the imperial gallon so you have to convert the dollar amount to Canadian and then convert the size of the gallon too. Our gas is about $1 per liter (liters are easier to measure). That's about $0.75 US. A US gallon of gas runs about $2.50 (anywhere from $1.99 to $4.00 depending on where you are) and has 3.8 litres in it so each liter costs $ .66US or $ .90CDN - $ .10 a liter difference. Now booze is another story. We were just in Florida and picked up 3 bottles of Bacardi rum for $60US total. That same bottle is $60 CDN each here!!! So when I do quote prices, I try to split the difference. If I say that a tank costs about $200, you'll find that a tank costs about $200 USD in the USA and about $250 here in Canada. If I'm not sure I'll check on some discount sites. When Diana and I visit a dive store while traveling, I'm always watching the prices and I'm amazed how scuba gear in the USA is often more expensive than in Canada - before conversion! That is, the price tags on regulators and computers are often higher than the tags for the same item here in Canada. Not sure if this answered your question. Alec

Hi Alec I am new to scuba diving and i have watched almost all of ur videos. They are great! I am looking to buy a regulator, safe second and a bcd. I already have mask snorkel fins but I don't really know good companies to buy and I don't really know what level of gear to buy. I will be scuba diving in cape cod Massachusetts and the water temp is typically 60-45 area. I was wondering if you could just give a few recommendations for a new diver. Hi Jimmy, Welcome to diving! The best advice I can give to you is to rent your gear first and get a good feel for what you like before you buy. Most proper diving companies such as Oceanic, Mares, Cressi, Aqua Lung (many others I cant quite think of atm) all sell good quality regulators and BCD's. as long as you stick to the well known brands you cant go far wrong. Also you mentioned diving in colder water so I would reccomend getting cold water rated regulators if you are buying your own. Basically these regs are environmentally sealed which prevent them from freezing and causing free flows. They cost a little bit more but its worth it due to the increased safety and piece of mind. If in any doubt speak to your local dive school / centre or shop and ask them what they reccomend. Good luck and safe diving!

i like my hollis dc2 and 212 reg. very nice for cold and warm water and easy on the wallet. i added a mares rover octopus. solid setup and should last a long time. my two cents. my bcd is similar to alec's travel bc. i use the oceanic islander 2. light and affordable but still quality. but i am saving for an aqualung i3 dimension because i love the intuitive i3 controls and easy air dump!

Welcome to a wonderful sport James. You have so much to look forward to. I sympathize with your dilemma. I bought my first scuba system from my postman! All of the major brands are excellent. They all give great performance and a good warranty. Contrary to popular belief and to what you may read here and other places, no scuba brand is 'better'. I suggest you go to your LDS (Local Dive Store) and get to know the owner/manager. You want to get gear that you can get easy help and service for. Maybe they have a Rent-To-Own plan. Maybe they'll help you get what you need over tine and save you money. In my store I'd often work with a young, new diver to make a up a set of gear that is good for him. Then I'd determine a good package price to save him money but also allow him to buy it over time. You'll have to pay before you get the gear but that way you get a good price but can pay as you can. I'm not a fan of on-line discount scuba gear. It may look a lot cheaper but you don't know the guy, you're on your own regarding make and model (they decide that based on their inventory - NOT based on your needs) and there's no paying over time of course. Then you have to face your LDS owner for service or warranty. A good guy will be happy to help but if you've not patronized him, why should he love it when you walk in? I hope this helps you a bit. Well, it was bound to happen. I have no idea what you're talking about when you say 'felt soled boots'. We don't have them in the West as far as I know. I know that fly-fishermen wear a felt soled boot to keep them from slipping on the rocks but never seen them for diving. Maybe another viewer has something to add. Alec

I would like to know if the thickness of the boots help with achieving proper trim? My legs are heavy and fall down if I do not move them. Will getting a thick boot help keep it afloat?

Boots pretty much come in 3mm (thin) or 6.5mm (thick) although I've seen some 5mm. The 6.5mm boots are for cold water and they would have more buoyancy. Avoid the ones with the heavy, running shoe-type sole. They'd be more negative. Good luck. Alec

Another new idea that seems to work and is accepted by many divers. These provide firm grip for slippery shores and beach entries with slimy rock surfaces. Not personally using them (my old dive boots still work fine), a good grip on a wet boat is a good thing right?

I just bought a 2nd hand kit the regulator is a bit wierd the SPG is a computer and the 2nd spare reg is a combo attachment to the bcd so just the 3 legs of octopus instead of 4. Is it ok or illegal?

So you have an AI Computer. That's Air Integrated. The computer notes your dive information (depth, time, etc) and and shows your dive time remaining based on depth/time. But yours also records your air supply. It shows the remaining air at all times (good) but it also can now record your air consumption rate by simply comparing the drop in pressure over time. It also shows your dive time remaining based on air consumption (best). I've discussed the merits and difficulties of a BCD mounted Safe Second in a prior video. It's a neat idea and is sold on the strength of eliminating 1 hose (if that's a big deal!). It's certainly not perfect. Search for . Take care. Alec

The Open Water class with dives will be close to $500. You really need to get a personal gear set asap - mask, snorkel, fins & boots. Decent stuff will be about $200+. And a dive computer - $300 to $500. When you get hooked (notice I said when, not if), you'll want scuba gear and an exposure suit - about $1500 ought to do it. Start to finish, certified diver and fully outfitted $200 to $2500. One of my sons-in-law sells Specialized bicycles. A decent one starts at $2000; the one you want is $5000; his own demonstrator costs $15,000. You can use it on clear days from May to November. Great kid but .............!!!! nice vid alec. we call those very hard boots rock boots. You forgot to mention about boots that can be fitted to a drysuit. Anyway i have a question for you not related to this vid in particular: I saw some divers when opening the tank valve they keep the purge pressed on the second stage and after air starts hissing they let go. Do they have a particular reason to do that?

We too call the big, molded boots on a dry suits Rock Boots. I'm not sure if there's a reason for them to do that. Perhaps their instructor learned that way and simply passed it on without knowing why himself. That's a common issue with scuba instructors. Technically I can think of no reason for it. Whether you press the purge on the second stage before or after the air is turned on makes no difference. You're really just checking to be sure it's working OK. You should also breath in and out after that initial press. Often the exhaust valve is stuck shut. And don't forget the safe second too. Some regulators with pilot valve second stages won't set up properly until they have full intermediate pressure on them. Holding the purge down while turning on the air doesn't allow those regs to set up properly. You may have heard some regs give a short, sharp blast when the air is turned on - Oceanic Omega, Poseidon, Scubapro X series, etc. That's normal for them. It is a good idea to press the purge momentarily after turning on the air but BEFORE breathing in and out. I won't tell you about all the things that I've accidentally sucked in from a regulator second stage over the years by not doing that. Spiders is the least offensive! Thanks for watching. Alec

What's your thinking of full pocket fins (no boots) for tropical dives instead of boots + oversized/heavier open fins ? I tried my snorkeling fins (full pockets, not boots) that I use all the time in Maui, in a pool back home vs boots+open dive fins (tried 2 I own including the Nova you rave about) and found my full foot snorkeling ones were actually more efficient and faster doing laps will full gear underwater.. will see on actual dive. Also while I use a drysuit here in Monterey, I found it much more comfortable to use the soft compressed 3mm socks on the drysuit directly into a sized down Nova fin (normally need L/XL with size 11, but using M size I found on the cheap) as it compresses with depth while 'hard' boots don't shrink as well with depth... I just use a thin (1-2mm) tropical boot slip on with a rubber sole if I need to walk around to protect my drysuit built in soft socks.

I've not had a love affair with Full Foot Fins as they're called. They almost invariably are not as stiff and strong as strap fins and that could become a factor in a current or with a 'need for speed'. And it's a nuisance when diving from shore. If you leave them on to protect your feet, they fill with sand. If you take them off to avoid the sand, your feet will get hurt on rocks, shells, urchins, etc. Laps in a pool is one thing but in a real diving environment, things change. A lot of divers who live in the tropics wear them exclusively but they most often dive from a boat so the above is no factor. Plus they like to gear up and jump in quickly. There's no questions that boots and strap fins are slower. With care the soft boots on a dry suit are good. I wish they made a soft neoprene boot on a dry suit that had a molded sole like a wetsuit boot - not as big and bulky as a molded dry suit boot. Alec

I'm with you on the drysuit soft socks - if they only added a soft rubber bottom (not the bulky hard boots I've seen) I would be set (still compresses, protect and doesn't slip). Right now I'm experimenting with a very thin sock with a bit of non slip rubber so I don't slip when walking around the boat, and can keep using my undersized Nova fins as regular soft boots make it too tight otherwise...

I tried my Split fins (Tusa Xpert Zoom 3), my ScubaPro Nova (both with booties) and my cheap snorkeling fins (full pocket) doing long lapses fully geared (warm water setup) and was shocked I was less tired (legs/knees) and going so much faster that my regulator hose was actually vibrating with the speed! not what I expected with a softer fin (vs much more expensive fins).

I've not done a scientific study as you have Alain, but my general impressions are these: 1. although I sold a lot of split fins, now I think the idea is highly overrated. In retrospect, the idea that you can improve fin performance by having them open up and dump water when finning hard is silly - as silly as having holes in the blade. Plus, as part of their design, since the blade is cut in two and offers no support, large ribs are needed to make the fin stay straight and that makes them heavy. 2. the Nova fin is the best I've ever worn and that's a LOT of fins. It looks a bit weird but the overall size and shape are classic dive fin plus they are light. The high-tech features are, IMO, genuine benefits - the wing tips, the bungee straps and the compression slots. The compression slots are a good idea - put too much effort if and they bend but then snap back at the end of the stroke so your effort isn't all wasted. And as usual the Scubapro pocket is perfectly designed for comfort. 3. Full Foot Fins certainly have a use. I love their light weight and easy to put on/off but there's no way a full foot fin can do the same job as a strap fin. Compare any FFF with it's strap companion (say, Nova vs Nova) and the FFF is smaller and more flexible. It simply can't move the same water without a lot more finning (that is, speed or number of strokes). I think the effort evens out since the fin pushes less but it's lighter so doesn't have the same inertia/momentum issues. Again I'd have to say that a busy diver would benefit from having both but I do not think they can do each other's job effectively. Just my unscientific thoughts. What does a scientist think - Alain? I think you are into something... I never counted the number of strokes or speed with the snorkeling fins, so I may have used more air/energy at the end but my legs felt less tired. As you mentioned they are lighter (half the nova, which was half the split) so they are easier to move around. Wish I had the 2 novas side by side to compare... my split fins were so heavy and they still caused leg cramp on some very long swims, so much for that design supposed benefit.

I like my boots to be the exact right size, given a choice. However, not only is that a subjective call it's not always possible. Dive boots come in even sizes only so if you are an 8 or a 10 AND if the manufacturer makes his 8 or 10 the way you like it, you're winner. Unfortunately that's not usually the case. We always had at least 3 different manufacturers boots in my store. They were all the same price, the same quality and pretty much had the same features. We did that because each manufacturer is slightly different. If you came in I'd be able to find a pair that would be the best fit for you - right length, right width and right feel. To answer your question, it's better to have the boots very slightly bigger than smaller. Few things can ruin a dive quicker that boots that are too tight and that hurt especially if it's a long dive with lots of finning maybe against a current. I have recommended that divers put a pair of socks, either think or thin depending on the need, under their boots to help with the fit and to increase warmth. Hope this helps. Alec

I am thinking about buying ScubaPro seawing nova fins, but I am concerned about the the size of their foot pocket. the only reason I bought my current fins Seac Propulsion, (I don't really like diving with them) is because I have really small feet women's size 5.5-6.0, and they were the only ones that wouldn't wobble all over my foot. If I get Seawing Novas, in x-small, how is their foot pocket, is it small enough to fit snuggly on 3mm boots on really small feet? I am worried that even if its short enough it would still be too wide for me.

I was wondering if you could make a video were you talk about water in the first stage, what to do, what not to do etc. Came from a dive here in Egypt and was about to rinse my regulator (Apeks XTX200 and 50), socked under water I realize that the protection cap was not on.... Now this was my last dive but not heading home till Sunday. Tried to hang it for dry as that was the only solution I could think of. So perhaps some good advice, what not to do, what to do and some technical talk around what happens if? For the sake of my regulator, I am going to my dive center in Norway to have it checked and serviced.... Anyway keep those teck tips coming ;) Tom...

I already did a bit of that for another viewer Tom but you're on the right track. Since it was salt water you really ought to have it checked. If it happens again, I suggest you put it into fresh water (REAL fresh water - not the fresh water rinse tank on the boat!) with the dust cap off so some water goes in and then put it on a tank and let air blow through it for a full minute. 2 things to note: 1. take the Schrader valve out of the end of the LP BCD hose and let air blow through that too. The Schrader valve (I'm sure you know this Tom) is the same valve as used in bikes and car tires. Easy to get out. 2. remove the SPG head from the HP hose. You do not want water to get into the SPG (or computer). It will ruin it. When you hook it to a tank, air will blow out of the hose and dry it. Don't worry about the pressure. Surprisingly, less air will blow out of the HP hose than the LP hose. Don't lose the swivel pin. If the regs been serviced lately they shouldn't charge you too much to "dry" it. Good lcuk. Alec

Thanks Alec, but I rinsed it in water and packed it in my bag without air blowing through. I will hand it over to my master instructor at his dive center first thing back home. Have no air here I am. Hope this will be ok. I am not technical when it comes to life preserving equipment, there I tend to chicken out. So fingers crossed the 1st and 2nd stage isnt broken. PS no SPG is connected, just a regulary pressure guage. I had my Oceanic OCI with me.. Tom

Boots aren't so much a wetsuit accessory anymore as they are specialized activity footwear. I't'd be nice to see what Nike or Vans might bring to the dive market, leveraging on their knowledge of feet and shoes, and hopefully lifting the quality of what's available across the board.

Assuming you're talking about wetsuit boots, about all you can do is soak them in warm water then put them on and wear them until they dry. That ought to make them softer and take the shape of your foot so they feel better. Newer boots are made of much softer and more flexible neoprene. Is that the boots you mean? Alec

Sure. They were neat. 2 pieces of flat rubber, cut in the shape of a foot and glued together at the edge. It looks like a kindergarten student made them! Funny. I like warm water and a warm climate, especially as I get older. But I also don't mind colder weather. The thing that really gets me is humidity! When it's so humid that you can't sweat to cool off, it's not fun. All you can do is jump into the water somewhere. I've been to quite a few places in Asia but not to Singapore. It doesn't sound like I'd enjoy it. Take care. Alec
