Weight to volume ratio is also extremely important, especially for stage tanks, sidemount or not breaking your back. For example, S80s (11,1L and 207 bar) weigh 14,3Kg and will become buoyant under a pressure of 80 bar. You'll have to bring more weight to compensate that, ending up with a very heavy setup. With a lightweight 200bar steel 12L long, the weight is 12,5kg. A bit more air than the S80, but stays negatively buoyant even when empty and is more compact. Less lead on the belt. And a short 12L is often around 15,5kg. Many people believe that aluminium tanks are lighter than steel at the same volume, but it's not always true. A 7L aluminium weighs 9Kg (200 bar). Roth makes 8,5L (230 bar) tanks that weigh 8,4Kg. Aluminium doesn't mean light on land, on the contrary. What is true is that aluminium tanks are more buoyant. Great when diving in warm water in a rashguard, but as soon as you have to put on a 8mm wetsuit or more... Lead, a lot of it.

AL80s are better for stage tanks. You are going from -4.4lbs to + 1.4lbs which near neutral, so that means you can drop or add them without huge changes in your buoyancy. While HP100, which is similar to your 12L steel, is -9lbs to -1.5lbs. Which if you are carrying two is massive amount of weight change. You drop one you better be johnny on the spot with the dump valve.

Great tips, as usual, thanks! One thing to also take care is that there are 230 and 300bars tanks, but 300b compressors are not that common.

I'm 5'9", but find a dumpy 12 is more comfortable on a RHIB than a long 12. It's also the same diameter as a 15L, so when switching between a 15 and a 12, I don't need to mess around with my cam band between dives. On the point of 'removing the sticker to disguise it's out of test', beside (as you say) not being the only way to tell, surely no test centre will fill a cylinder without one (unless it's a new cylinder)? However, just off to take the boots off my cylinders for a check, I've not done it in a while - Good advice!

Suggest one more tip. Partially open the valve momentarily just before attaching reg or refilling. This will blow out any dust/water in the throat of the 1st stage connection point. Not usually a problem when dust cap on/tape over, but I’ve seen many times where racked cylinders for the 2nd dive were sprayed with the boat’s bow chop on the way to the dive site so no guarantee it’s bone dry. More important though is refillers cracking the valve momentarily before attaching the compressor hose yoke. Once used, as the cap/tape is left off, there is nothing stopping water, sand, etc getting into the cylinder valve throat & then being blown into the tank when filled. Saw at one dive shop the deck hand rinse all the tanks by spraying them with a hose & then attaching the hose. Before he refilled my tank I insisted it was opened for a second or two. A couple of drops of water were blown out in a fine mist. As this deckie didn’t usually do this I’d hate to think how much internal rust was in the shop’s rental cylinders.

Can you do a video on transporting your gear? When I travel through an airport, I can fit my kit (BDC, Reg, fins, mask, snorkel, computer, dive camera) in one large travel suitcase. But when I go dive, I don't want to lug my suitcase on the boat where it can get wet and nasty. Any recommendations? Do I buy a mesh bag to transport from boat to hotel? Bag recommendations? I keep my dry bag(towel, wallet, snacks) in that mess too? What is normal/efficient?

Hi, and what you think about carbon fiber cylinder to scuba dive. I received tables from carbondive Austria and I'm thinking about buying one of this tuxing 6.8L 300psi max to scuba dive, maximum 15m. What you think about? People say that is just a question of carrying about max 4 kg more of weight at belt

Forget using aluminium tanks. ( main tank ) Unless you like being overweighted to compensate for the positive buoyancy that happens when tank is empty. Also an aluminium tank majority of the time has lower pressure. 200 bar vs 232 bar. These tanks are great for stage cylinders. Side mounted tanks, I still prefer steel

what are your thoughts on painting tanks? It's always fun to see custom paint jobs but I would think this needs to be done with some discernment and skill. Don't sand down to the bare metal of a tank, etc.

A question that always pops up... I always have my cylinder filled with EAN32 Nitrox. Can I have normal compressed air filled in between or does the cylinder need special treatment afterwards? I ask for documentation if someone watches the video sometime :)
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 2 жыл бұрын
You can ask for an air fill at any time. You just have to analyse it afterwards to check the subsequent O2 level for entry in your dive computer. If you then want to add Nitrox again the fill guy should be able to juggle it to get the ratio you want.

Do not let anyone who fills your cylinder place it in water during the fill. It doesn’t do any good, and is unnecessary,
