He deserved it, he was far too close to that octopus. Human always believe THEY have the right to encroach but no other animal does. He's lucky, really, because the octopus could've gotten MUCH more aggressive.

First mistake this diver made was being too aggressive by pulling off the tentacle too rough. This clearly freaked the poor octopus out and was in self defense mode. Be more calmer next time.

He wasn’t being attacked. This is fairly normal inquisitive octopus behaviour, and the diver’s panicked response made things infinitely worse. A threatened octopus will ink and flee, not attack.
