i have long held that the best characters exist as "this character is badass. and happen to be (insert)". you should be able to swap around any given piece of a character along that vein (male/female, straight/LGBT, Race) without it feeling forced, or even necessarily important. Sgt Johnson (Halo series) nailed that. it didn't matter that he was black, he was badass with the force of his speeches and the way he acts towards the Master Chief is less a person to their idol, and more the banter of two friends, most of the time. it had nothing to do with his being black or not. i feel like you should be able to have a movie run without any jokes about male/female anatomy on a given character and it should still be a solid character. otherwise you gotta go back to the writing board and either replace the character, or give them character beyond a cardboard cutout. Sgt Vertaski in Live Die Repeat nailed this. her character initially gives this "i am untouchable" air to them, and even incapacitates people who look down on her (don't call her the full metal bitch unless you want your chest caved in). and once Cage realizes what she went through at Verdun is when she finally starts opening up at all to him. narratively, if you made her a male and kept everything else the same, it wouldn't really damage the story, while allowing her to express emotion. to me that means she was a very well written female character, because it wasn't in the foreground of the character when they were writing her, but she has more character than a random stone.

@@edschramm6757 Exactly! And even if that other identity is made very important to the character or storyline - like their sex/gender, sexuality, race, etc., they have to be an organic person/character in their own right far more than anything to be a SUCCESSFUL character. And people forget to value that correctly. Make them feel more like an organic person with struggles, rather than a lame attempt at pandering for views. Bad representation can honestly be worse than none at all.

The secret to writing women? Just treat them like living breathing people. They don’t have to be able to flip you over their shoulder to be badasses. Make them brilliant when it comes to making money. Make them politically savvy. Make them fantastic orators. Make them fiercely protective of their loved ones. Make them passionate learners. Just approach them like you would their male counterparts. Establish their character motivation. What are their character flaws? What is their character arc (if you plan to give them any)? And from there, draw up the character design. Character design always comes secondary to character motivation. Stop trying to fill a quota and treat them like human beings and not a set of tits and ass. It’s honestly not difficult and people still act like female characters are daunting to approach.
@kayhaych054 жыл бұрын
person person I actually disagree with this statement. But I’d like to explain why. There are certain experiences that colour a woman’s experience in life. Let’s use an example. Imagine we’re writing about a princess (cliche I know, but stick with me please). Would her experience be the same as that of a prince? Perhaps more pressure is placed upon her to maintain her beauty or physical appearance. Or perhaps there is a double standard to which she must maintain her virginity, whereas a prince may not be held to that same standard. Or perhaps her experience of marriage is expressly different from a prince. We should acknowledge and write about the differences in experience, rather than pretend they do not exist. No two people have the same life experiences, and so we shouldn’t shy away from talking about issues that explicitly affect women. I do understand there are some female characters where her gender plays no role in her experience. And while I acknowledge and appreciate these characters, I do believe that in some capacity, they exist in a vacuum. Societal and cultural norms have arisen in every culture in history, resulting in gender roles. So to say that gender shouldn’t affect a character’s story is somewhat ignorant of the female experience. If you read this entire comment you deserve an award. Sorry if I rambled. I’m just very passionate about well written female characters. Some of my favourite books are from the perspective of women :)

As badass as Toph is, Katara is extremely badass and powerful, while being compassionate and feminine at the same time. Her mother was murdered, her dad would leave her behind, and she grew up in a dystopia. Despite all of that she remained kind and was not bitter. That shows a lot of mental toughness on her part. She grew, practiced, and became even more mentally stronger and became a more powerful water bender. I would love to see someone make a video on her because everyone talks about Toph and Azula, but nobody talks about Katara even though she is arguably the most badass character on the show (besides Zuko.). She is personally my favorite character and definitely one of the best female characters in all of television. Katara, Toph, and every character on the show felt organic, and had realistic personalities. I love fairy tail so much man. The way the story goes sometimes is bad in a normal anime, but it actually works in fairy tail because of the point of the show. My favorite character is a tie between Natsu and Ezra. Lucy is a close second. I love how the creator writes every single one of the characters. Although it has story flaws I think it is genuinely a great show and I believe the creator has improved a lot in 100 year quest.
@meisstupid2 жыл бұрын
I really like the fact that all the female characters in Fairy Tail are very different in terms of personality and looks although their body types are quite similar (except for Wendy and Levy). Like, Lucy is a bookworm like Levy but more street smart while Levy is book smart. Wendy is a innocent and brave girl. Erza is motherly but also fierce in her own right. Juvia is Juvia, Mirajane is sweet and kind, but can turn into a demon if you cross her in the wrong way, the list goes on. But thats not what really defines them as a person. They have flaws, issues and trauma like a normal person does and that’s what makes Fairy Tail so great is that Mashima opens these weaknesses so that the characters grow and the weaknesses become strengths. He sees them as humans and not just side characters for the main protagonist to shine That’s why everyone in Fairy Tail is the main character and not just in the guild itself but everyone the main cast meet and interact with

Toph was seen as helpless because she was blind, sure... but she was also small, young, and female. all of those traits stacked on top of each other made people underestimate her like four times over. and Katara much more directly confronted the sexism of her own culture when she refused to be relegated solely to a healing role, and demanded to be trained in combat bending, which was in direct defiance of tradition. one of the first things Katara ever does on screen is call her brother sexist for trying to pigeonhole her into a strict gender role, and we watch Sokka outgrow this attitude after meeting Suki, showing that people can change with enough time, and a little proof that their thinking is backwards. comparatively, Legend of Korra doesn’t really tackle sexism at all, because it’s kind of implied that this is a post-sexism society. the areas where sexism existed for the original ATLA cast kind of got solved by them existing? like, Katara changed the way the water tribe operated in terms of teaching specific bending styles based on gender, and by becoming the legend that she was, Toph modeled strength and genius for later generations, while continuing to be a blind woman of relatively small stature. it’s her bending and demeanor that make her seem larger than life. comparatively, Korra had a whole different set of issues. she started as a strong bender as a child, and presented clearly as the avatar very early on, then grew up with the burden of great expectations resting on her shoulders, and, as far as I’m concerned, she really broke down a lot when she was actually challenged by her circumstances. for as cool as Korra’s design may be, her arc isn’t a very badass look... and has _much_ less to do with her being female. the only time her gender seems to be relevant is in the romantic subplots, and even then, only meta textually. because like... the world of avatar sidesteps addressing whether or not homophobia is a thing, but it is the meta reason why Korra and Asami were tossed in each other’s direction at the last minute. and I guess what I’m saying here is that ATLA had women that were badass, but that was not divorced from their femininity. and femininity doesn’t just mean pretty frills or delicacy or whatever. there are times when Toph, Katara, Suki, and even Azula are required to be women for the narrative to work. they are not interchangeable with men in these specific instances. for example, I find it interesting that Ozai looked at his two children, saw a son who wasn’t very good at fire bending, and had more empathy and emotion than pragmatism and ambition, saw a daughter who was the polar opposite, and basically shrugged and decided Azula was the favored child. no sexism present at all. meanwhile Katara had to struggle to prove herself worthy of inheriting the cultural knowledge of her own people because they wouldn’t teach her the things she needed to know on account of her gender. the difference is that Katara’s culture was viewing her as a person with a social identity, whereas Ozai viewed his kids equally and objectively as tools, and kept or discarded them based on utilitarian function. one is less sexist, but the other is more feeling. and the minds of the water tribe were able to be changed, because the water tribe _does_ have feelings that Katara could appeal to. injustice means something to them eventually. Ozai decided that Zuko was useless a long time ago, and nothing Zuko accomplishes could ever be enough to change that. implementing a character’s gender to communicate something like that is excellent writing. but it is also writing that stems from wanting to write a story about a woman. someone who couldn’t be a man and produce the desired narrative. being a badass comes in flavors other than raw beatdown capability... though these ladies happen to have that in spades. Katara was the emotional core of the group. a role that women often fill in stories like these. which led her to do things like keep Aang and Sokka’s goofiness in check, try to free enslaved people, and blood bend the hell out of a bunch of fire nation dudes while trying to find her mother’s murderer. her badassery isn’t a subversion of her role as an emotional person... it’s complimentary. and if a call for more diversity in a cast is able to bring about writing like this, then I say that the push for diversity is worth it. sure, it can backfire and create useless characters whose only trait is “woman” and nothing else, but like... I’d call that a problem with the writer, not the idea. if a good writer is toodling along writing their story, and someone suggests that their story doesn’t have many women and maybe it should, then that could open the door for the writer to do something creative with either an existing role, or additional characters that they’re only about to write because somebody pointed that out. that’s how we got Toph. and on the flip side, it’s not as though women haven’t gotten nerfed for their gender before either. Lisa Lisa from JJBA part 2 was supposed to be way more kickass than she ended up being, but due to predominant trends and ideas at the time, she never got to win in combat where we could actually see it happen. it was lucky that she didn’t get edited out entirely and replaced with some generic strongdude mentor. if folks are allowed to complain the badassery out of female characters, then I should be allowed to try and complain some badassery into them, yaknow? so yeah, including women in a story just to hit a diversity quota sucks, but sometimes trying for diversity in a story can still result in something good... if a writer is willing to put the same work into their women characters as they do with their men characters.

Exactly, how do you write or play a color or a gender? Those can only be as positive or negative as you want them to be. They can't have high and low points, nor can they ever grow. There's no journey the character can take, no true obstacles to overcome or improvement to be had. All they can do is just be there and do stuff because the plot says so. That's where a lot of stories these days seem to be falling short.

@University student in hiding ho ho ho Oh please, I know gigantic boobs are ridiculous, but Shonens are for teenage boys, of course they're gonna put humongous pillows on fictional characters, it sells. That said, if we COULD trade chest volume for personality, they should have done so from the f*cking start. Fun fact, the author himself did say in an interview that he quickly realized he sucked at writing female characters, which is pretty obvious. The closest he got to making decent female characters were Tsunade (who then immediately gets promoted to bench-warmer for-f*cking-ever) and Haku... who's not a girl. As for Korra, you can't seriously say it's that "suddenly she gay" ending that ruined the show, it's like what? 5 seconds at the end? In fact I thought that it wasn't bad to show that, sometimes, relationships don't work out.

@University student in hiding ho ho ho I think the big boob thing is just your own personal taste there. Which for Hinata are not as big as you are making them out to be. I think you might of been looking at two many fan manga or pictures, if you think Hinata is big in any way shape or form when it comes to chest size. Women having big boobs is not unrealistic. That is again your own personal taste. Female characters who have a chest with character have existed for years like in comics before they when down the drain. Which fun fact, the world largest naturally chest size for a woman is 109.22 cm held by a woman. Which is alot larger than Hinata. Also thank you for ignoring years of good female characters, like Emma from a promised neverland, which has the very same thing you requested. Your legit points aside from avatar the last air bender sequel. You could find what you want in anime/manga if you searched for it. I'm sorry you have to ignore years, generations of female characters just so you can go on a rant about how a realistic chest size is unrealistic. Oh oversexuallizing? Yeah lets forget about that when it's done to male. I am women. I love how people always ignore the male female fanservice and just go on to talk about the female fanservice. Oh no a male is stripping and taking off his shirt for no reason, showing off his abs and well tone perfection flawless body. It happens to both genders. Not just one. Bad writing happens to both genders. Not just one. It a issue suffer by both if we really want to go that far. Serious this one side nonsense is bs. It's always the females females. Never once about the male characters. Hahahahahahha hahahahaha! Hahahahahah. Bs it's hard to find great females character on the same level as Naruto? You mean Naruto who whole theme was being the under dog only for that to be total bs and he was the son of god. Revealing he was never a underdog at all, he was this famous legendary character reborn the whole time? Something that undermines countless things related to Naruto's character? @emblemblade92455 жыл бұрын
I’m definitely in love with this idea but I know that some characters can be enhanced, so to speak, by being a whamen, especially depending on the setting. I guess what I’m trying to say is, when you make a badass character and say “this badass is also a whamen”, does that mean the character would look and act the exact same way if that character was chosen to be a man instead? I sometimes have a hard time understanding at what point of writing a character do you decide their gender, because you’ve gotta do it at some point and it will change the way the audience views the character because even though men and whamen can both be total badasses I do believe there are inherent differences between the sexes (not to get too political). So yeah love the phrase, but I’m a bit murky on the implementation. Deciding when’s the right time to say whether this badass is a man or whamen, or perhaps some minority, and how much they should be fleshed out with that in mind if they are a minority. It’s a tricky subject isn’t it.

Personally I don't mind the fact that they're women to be an integral part of how they're badass as that is more authentic to the real life way a woman is treated and goes through life. @rumplstiltztinkerstein5 жыл бұрын
@@bafbaas1210 I think it's quite funny how some people think that woman need to be more like men to be "tough". They talk about female power, but when they see one lady just being herself these "feminists" get mad. The characters that Nux spoke about in this video are awesome because they are themselves. They have their personal dreams, desires and personality. They act according to who they are even if society doesn't agree with that. The feminists are a chunk of society that wants to decide what people should and shouldn't be. So if you ignore them and just be yourself, you are a badass.

For example, a James Bond type (repeat, _type_) character who does cool stuff, picks up the ladies, always a gentleman, so on and so forth. If you were to simply make a character like him female, then theoretically that would also mean picking up the hot guy, always a lady (the posh kind, not the gender kind), does cool stuff, all of which put together... doesn't quite mesh as well, mostly due to preexisting biases of women who "pick up" guys and what "being a lady" means. Another thing that can make it difficult is that if the villain is one of those vain, egotistical dudes who underestimates the hero, they probably don't have the best views on gender roles which can easily make it seem as if the gender is more important than the accomplishments. I'm not saying it's impossible, or necessarily even that difficult, just that there's a little more to it sometimes. However, race should have even less of these issues, so I really want to see more cartoons with non-white protagonists out there like Static Shock or the one about Cornelius Filmore. Craig of the Creek is a good step, but that doesn't mean it's a show I want to watch.
@ShadowAraun5 жыл бұрын
@@seandabest4329 I do agree about the villain bit, but that mostly stems from people using art and media to push their own views. if they can see something a certain way, death of the author, that's how it was meant. An author could write a good female protag fighting a stereotypical villain who happens to be male and who happens to look down on the protag and mean nothing intentionally political by it, and people would see it and see it as feminism or some shit. a good modern example of this is the Bubble Girl scene that pissed people off in My Hero. i have flat out heard people say "if it was a guy in that machine it would've been funny" and i nearly choked trying not to laugh at that double standard statement (also that scene gave me some great loony toons flashbacks, top tier comedic subversion). Even people who believe in refining society to true equality have these double standards and bias's towards men and women and its freekin' hilarious that they don't realize it.
@ClashBluelight5 жыл бұрын
@@seandabest4329 i get where you're coming from, but the basic idea of writing what you know still applies. also for the "bond type" as you describe it. i feel like there are characters who fit this bill pretty well. rouge the bat and kim possible are both pretty clearly bond style characters in their own way just to name a few. cat woman also fulfills bond tropes pretty well. it's about perspective. given enough time i'm sure i could find more "bond type" female characters who don't hit these pitfalls than there are versions of bond himself. really my point was to write what you're good at. then assign a gender if that doesn't hurt anything. like, why does the evil temptress have to be female? because the victims are overwhelmingly straight males. since there's a realistic plot reason i wouldn't change this one. but, why is the champion wrestler with mommy issues male? no reason? then we can change this one freely. it should always come back to why you wrote the character in the first place. if you wrote a character to serve a purpose then their gender should match that if possible. if the purpose isn't gender specific then make them what you want. WHAT they are should matter very little when compared to WHO they are. hope i cleared up my stance a little.

I personally like it more when the character being a woman just enhance the traits they have and just make the character better, let's take Toph, she was meant to be a badass man, he was supposed to be a little older too, like Bowling, yet we had Toph, a badass little girl, her traits, just shine brighter, the same with Akane from Psycho Pass. Sometimes is not a matter of "does not matter if is a woman or a man" rather, this character being a woman, just shine brighter, without the gender overshining their traits.
@justanawkwardnerd4 жыл бұрын
I think it's because of sexism that makes those characters better for you - the bar for a well-written woman is so fucking low, that media and society actively treating a woman as a well-developed person in their own right the way they would a man is what makes a good female character SO much better and interesting. The mark of a great character is so easy for men because it's thought that only men can have good stories or lives, or that men are more universally relatable and a woman is just not as interesting in comparison. That's just the sexism popping out, and why female characters are, across the board, lackluster. Also, remember that many male-dominated societies and professions ACTIVELY demeaned women's contributions for much of anything across the world for several generations. Writing - historical, literature, etc., was generally a male-dominated field when it was taken seriously, and that has lingering effects on how we view story-telling today.

This is a long way to say, “Characters that are women should be written as characters.” Like, I agree! And you have a point! But wanting to tell diverse stories regularly and not once in a blue moon isn’t the problem. It’s having writers that aren’t self aware enough to realize they’re making a token, which no one likes. It sounds like you don’t have any problem with strong female characters or representing diversity more- you have a problem with bad writing and writers that don’t know how to represent or tell a good story. I just want to see more awesome characters. I don’t care if some are straight white dudes or if some are aromantic pansexual people covered in polka dots. I do know that seeing representation in media can literally save lives. 🤷 Your own argument is that characters should just be characters, it doesn’t matter, so why would more diversity be a problem if it doesn’t matter? I’m honestly not trying to pick a fight. Just wanted to say my piece.
@EskChan194 жыл бұрын
More diversity itself wouldn't be a problem. It only becomes a problem when it becoems extremely on the nose that this was just done for diversity, or when it actively hurts the story. Or when it takes stuff away from people. Nobody gives a shit if a good character is a woman or not. But when 90% of the "story" is "look how cool she is because she is a woman. She's a woman did you know? BTW she's a awesome woman. She's awesome because she is a woman", then that sucks. And most of western media is all about that now. Most of the time it's just "look we have a *insert woman or actual minority here* ". And that's not interesting. Same with if it hurts the story. Whatever way that may be. We see that in war stories, where they try to tell realistic stories about war and the past, but then suddenly 50% of the nazis are black women wielding katanas with their robot arms like in Battlefield, then it just breaks the story. Or if some stupd storyline is suddenly shoved into somewhere where it ahs no place, like Supergilr did, where it's all about superheroes, but then they dedicate an entire season to her sister being lesbian, and it's pretty much the only thing happening in the entire season. Even worse when they need to construct enemies because they can' take any real ones. Like everything went fine, but suddenly when it turns out her sister is gay, all white men are suddenly douchebags and everyone suddenly behaves like they came straight out of the 1930s. One season everything is normal, second season, just because they want to be as on the nose as possible, suddenly everyone is "Shut up gay people are bad, go back to the kitchen woman!" out of nowhere just because they couldn't find a realistic representation of the subject. And the third and probably worst one is when, insteda of making representation natural by making own, original concepts, they just take suff away from people and make it their own. People wanted a superhero that represents black people, so they made Black panther. Neat. But then they went on their "Wouldn't it be cool if everything was diverse now?" and suddenly Captain America is black, Hulk is asian, Thor is a woman, Iron Man is a black woman, Captain Marvel is a woman, and so on and so on. They could make their own original characters, like Miss Marvel or Spider Gwen. But no, they want to be as in the face as they can be by remodeling t he stuff people enjoyed for decades, just to get some browny points for "look how diverse we are guys!" And it's those three areas that make up pretty much 99% of western media nowadays. And it sucks. And it's what makes people go up against SJWism. Because western media nowadays is almost exclusively tokenism. Actually good characters are relatable to everyone and don't need to be defined entirely by their skincolor or gender. I like Samus Aran just as much as i like Link, because Samus doesn't need to go around shouting "I'm a woman, respect me i'm a woman you people!" all the time. So more diversity itself isn't a problem, but that it's forcefully shoved down our throats and in turn actively makes stories objectively worse is a problem. Also that push that "Diversity" just means "Ban White Men" is also not helping a lot. More diversity is fine, but doing that by the checkbox and making sure that all white people are only allowed to be evil because all white people are evil i not fine.
@dbzfan452 жыл бұрын
@@EskChan19 I agree with the first couple parts of your reply, especially in supergirls case (I say that as a black gay person). The thing I hate is when the storyline revolves around them being gay or anything like that, it should focus on the plot of the show and the character happens to be gay. That being said the last half of your reply is where I differ and where like 99% of the complaints of tokenism fall into the same trap that they are complaining about in the first place. For example with super heroes, it is very different to say the storyline shouldn’t be them constantly stating “look how awesome I am being a women doing awesome thing” or “look at me I’m doing this thing WHILE GAY” bla bla bla and then someone saying hey “I’m the next person taking up this mantle” and they happen to be black. Those are two different things where I feel you start to cross the line between tokenism and literally just having diversity which in itself isn’t bad as explained from the original commenter. You can’t argue that it’s bad to exclude white men from the media but it’s okay to do that to everyone else? As long as it’s a well written character who is driven by the plot then they aren’t a Tolken character and it does not matter what race, sexual orientation, etc they are. Super heroes have new people take up the mantle all the time that’s nothing new. So as long as they don’t change the character or their motivations for that character is does not actually matter what they look like. By saying that them now being black or a women or whatever that it’s tokenism, even in cases where the character itself did not change then by your own reasoning for why tokenism is bad then you’re doing exact same thing. It also makes it impossible to have well written diverse characters if it’s automatically labeled as tokenism just by those minorities existing at all. Like when the new comic about Jon Kent (Superman’s son) was teased everyone started shouting about how it was tokienism, and how him being gay ruined the story etc. But this was before the comic was even released! And he was a new character! You can’t call it tokenism if you haven’t even read the comic yet, he could be the most well written character ever made but instead he is instantly shut down. This is just one example of many as to why I can’t subscribe to the notion that all western media suffers from tolkinism because most people are so reactive to seeing diversity that they are making it so there is actually no way to win. We can’t head in the direction where anything that’s not exactly the same as it’s always been is automatically bad, we have to take the focus of simply “diversity” and call it what it really is which is a problem with writing. So I guess my point is that the solution is for everyone to not be so reactive to diversity being present in newer media (because it’s not going to stop and it shouldn’t) but be diligent in making sure these characters are actually well written, add to the plot, and realistic otherwise we will keep seeing this problem happen. Just my two cents though 🤷🏾♀️

@@EskChan19 You got WAY too political, media is not there to shove an agenda down your throat, media is making bad characters because they sell. I do agree with "women for the sake of diversity" is generally bad and harms the story BUT sometimes the character's main struggle can revolve around their identity _as_ a women, and in those cases, being a women is essential for the character and helps the story rather than crippling it. Again I think ultimately the important thing here is properly writing a character, whether it's a bi women or a black man it doesn't matter.

Actually, Korra was initially meant to be a boy because the producers thought a girl protag wouldn't be well received by viewers. After a test group watched the pilot, they're response to her being a girl was "who cares", so she stayed a "whamen" despite being whamen. It was never added simply to win some "whamen" points (this was 2012, no one cared about Whamen points back then). Legend of Korra had Nickelodeon constantly cutting their budget and production deadlines which made the show live short to Avatar expectations. Korra was meant to be a mirror to what Aang was. One never wanted to be the avatar, the other defined herself as the Avatar, and had her own identity challenged as the world needed an Avatar less and less. If production wasn't cut by Nick so much, the writers could've explained her story better.
@spiceyblueroyalhoney12254 жыл бұрын
even though they cut their budget or whatever doesn't excuse most of what they did. It's really bad. Also, this must have been much earlier in the show because there are a lot of things (annoying romance plots) that wouldn't make sense unless they gender-swapped everyone with their design at the last minute. And the back story od the first avatar is inconsistent with ATLA completely and I hate it and it's a hypocrite of a protagonist. Even if their budget was cut that show could have still been better.
@Eccentrick2184 жыл бұрын
@@spiceyblueroyalhoney1225 Actually, the reason Korrasami couldn't be better expressed was because Nickelodeon didn't want LGTB representation in a children's cartoon show. Bryke wasn't allowed to flesh out their relationship, because Nick was afraid of getting anti-LGTB backlash. In the end, they could only release a hollow form of their romance, because more romantic development between them was against what Nickelodeon wanted.
@spiceyblueroyalhoney12254 жыл бұрын
@@Eccentrick218 even if it's hollow, it's pretty messed up. She somehow falls for the person who stole her boyfriend before, hit on her boyfriend's sister, and forces herself on the boyfriend. They should have just not bothered with it or made a background character be gay mako because it was horrible.

The thing is, no matter whether she's a girl or a boy, she's Mary Sue who gets stuff handed to her and rewarded for every stupid decision she makes. @@shyguyrocks1 Yeah, I'll put spoilers as an addendum, so you can read them at your own risk. Scroll slowly. Anyway it's actually conditional and dependent on how well you yourself took the future volumes, but many viewers, including myself, generally agree that the handling of Yang's character,* especially in regards to her relationships (hint: Frogs tie into this),* is incompetent and damaging to her character, and is rather contradictory to Nux's point in the video, if these volumes aren't disregarded. I can't go over too much since it's been a chore to watch the latest volumes, but I can say any growth of her character that could've resulted from the ending of volume 3 was only partially explored in volume 4, before being squandered in V5.** That's about as much as I have to say without spoiling anything, but I hope it explained enough. *_SPOILER ADDENDUM_* ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *That namely being the fact she was forced into an awkward homosexual relationship with another primary character, partially as homosexual representation but predominantly as fan pandering. Thing is, it wouldn't be an issue (at least, it mostly wouldn't) were it not for the fact that her partner, Blake, embodies a lot of the sources for Yang's past trauma, namely abandonment issues, since her mother just up and left when she was still very young; there's also the fact that the basis for their relationship is flimsy at best (mostly a soft, comforting talk about Yang's step-mother), making it feel hollow and unbelievable. Which doesn't help when she chooses to save the person most likely to abandon her again over her unconditionally loving sister in a near death situation. **See, at the end of volume 3, Yang faces off against Blake's ex-boyfriend and terror cell commander (long story) and, in one move, is absolutely annihilated by him, severing her -left- right arm. Typically being a bombastic, cocksure, trigger-happy brawler, she's understandably shaken to her very core and thrown into a depressive rut when she not only faced the only enemy who could reliably take her out but also hurt her in a way no one else had. Add onto this her best friend (at the time) Blake, who had previously been open to her friends about her association with this terror group, ran away unexpectedly, it's understandable she'd be feeling... well, very bad. Thankfully, this sets up (or, implies) an arc for Yang, to rebuild herself physically and mentally, to learn from the mistakes of her bombastic, reckless fighting style, to fight with a bit more brain and come to terms with her former, immature self. And this *is* done throughout volume 4 as she lives and trains with her father. Come volume 5, however and it's simultaneously there yet not there; one of the first scenes we see of her in the volume shows her artificial arm termoring, likely as part of phantom limb syndrome or remembrance of its loss... as she, picks up a bottle of water? Whatever, it's a fairly minor detail anyway. Conversely, later on when she and her former teammate, Weiss, are at her mother's bandit camp, outnumbered like ten to one, she readies herself into a fighting stance and equips her weapons, like she always does, pumping herself up to fight and throw down. Here is where I'd expect her to suddenly experience some kind of PTSD or PTSD-lite symptoms yet... no. There was a fight before this encounter, where after owning everyone, she holds her prosthetic arm to still its tremors yet again, which does qualify as a symptom I'd expect but not only is it the only good scene I remember of this since she lost her arm, it's also over and disregarded very quickly into triviality. It had no bearing on her fighting capability, not least to mention it kinda cheapens her growth from volume 4. Perhaps there are more scenes like this, but I failed to finish volume 5 and haven't really been captivated by the later volumes to find out, so I don't really know.

Onii-chan is watching you Then you should probably watch volume 6 before writing this essay...It definitely shows the hostility Yang has for Blake and shows that it won’t be mended over night. Not to mention a certain confrontation that allows her to finally overcome her PTSD tremors. Yang did learn not to use her semblance all the time and that’s seen throughout v5, so she has changed. She used her head now. I’d prefer people to watch the whole thing before making assumptions I guess.
@GabimaruSano4 жыл бұрын
Kamila Diaz You should read my response as well for a different point of view from someone who’s watched all seven volumes. Ruby is the only team member left who needs real development and it certainly looks like she’ll be getting that in v8. Yang has learnt to not be so hot headed, Blake has learnt not to run away and Weiss has become more than her family name. Just because it doesn’t happen at the pace people want, doesn’t mean it doesn’t occur. RWBY is meant to be like 12/13 volumes- it’s a long story like anything else.

But oh yeah reading memes on social media just doesn’t work unless op or a kind soul in the comments writes out a description which I know can be a real hassle when you’re trying to do real-time reactions in online discourse. That’s why I’m lucky because then on the days where I’m more literally blind I can use my memory as a reference point and match colour schemes (because I’ll still have light perception and colour and you can do a lot with that if you’ve been paying attention to your surroundings) and memes become intuitive once you know them but learning a new one is a big effort. But I do it a) because I want to and b) some of my friends can never read visuals under any conditions and I don’t want them left out. Sorry I’ve given the not-so-fun answers but thought I’d take an opportunity to showcase some of the reality of being blind because it’s not as one-dimensional as most people would think although for some people that can be the case like one of my friends was born without light perception so not only can she literally not see anything but she’s also never had any visual reference point even for colours. But honestly that expert level of blind is actually quite rare (about 4% last i heard). Anyways hope anyone who’s still around enjoyed the long read!
