I think that separating the gender from female characters to judge their quality lacks nuances. You can separate Toph’s gender, but Katara is a great example of a strong female character that is enriched in the concept of womanhood. Katara is feminine & girly, cares about grooming, believes in fortune telling, is nurturing & caring, & maternal. Her character represents a common female experience of sexism when she has to take on the responsibilities of domestic labor for her village, be an emotional pillar, literally heal people, & is barred from education that’s traditionally only offered to men. These events & their unraveling make up a large part of her character. As someone who grew up in a similar culture w/ similar experiences, she captures my feelings of rage from needing to uphold gender roles, but also shows me how to embrace womanhood & femininity

I never get this when people complain about women only being allowed to be the care takers etc, guess what men were only allowed to be soldiers etc only a select few would be able to rule and the same with the women, a select few were always at the top with the men, so men are physically stronger on average so we are the warriors, soldiers protecters, providers etc while women are the caretakers, nurtures etc we both have our strength and weakness and the less we fight to act like we are the same the better society will be
@niloticnya Жыл бұрын
@@toxicheadshot360 What does that have to do with Katara’s character? Sokka is older, but isn’t able to protect his village from danger. He shouldn’t have to just because he’s a *boy,* he’s also a kid. Katara was a child when she took on all chores. It’s common in my culture for boys to never learn how to take care of themselves (while pretending to have real jobs), and for girls to take care of everyone at a young age. Their *dad* is the one who left to fight in the war as an adult, so it’s odd that you’re essentially comparing Katara’s responsibilities as a child to a grown man

She have talent and that not normal to deprive, deny and forbide her just because she's a woman. We don't care about gender. Even in reallity, what we judge is if the person have the strenght and capacities and we don't care what he or she is. That why there are millitary women. All women are not the same so it's ridiculous to try to impose the same for all, there are not all care taker or nurtures. Before male and female we have our own possibility and it's not allways match the cliche that the society want. And more, we didn't have to block and impose a path of another. The she-hulk talk made me think of Claymore. There it is also set, that only women can be claymores, because only they can resist the temptation to turn into youma. Men give in to the urges much too fast. However, later in the story we are introduced to characters of both genders who have turned into youma, so in the end it still depends on the person. Also the big bad villain in the end is still a woman-turned-youma. Funny how it is exactly the same concept as she-hulk, but handled so differently.

Glad to see Izumi here. Overall, I think female FMA cast is great. Each in their own unique way. I've seen takes that Winry is bland, but I couldn't disagree more. People tends to mix her with other love interests of main characters, and they often poorly written. But Winry has her own arc completely unrelated to Ed. There is a gag that she is "weird, rough and not girly" because of her love of automail, but she is actually the most kind and empathetic character of the series. She is the first to break the cycle of hatred - and that's one of the most important messages of FMAB. Everything is connected, and if Winry gave up to her rage and killed Scar, Amestris couldn't be saved. But If you look for a character not romantically involved with man whatsoever - there is Olivier. I'm actually impressed how much Arakawa managed to explore her character while having (relatively) little screen time. I like how she owns her every decision and how that contrasts her brother flight from the war (very understandable one, but still). She believes that change can only occur by your own hands and waiting for a miracle is stupid. I think she is a very noble depiction of a soldier, patriot. Which is interesting, because FMA, being anti-militaristic show, often not portray being a soldier as something noble. Roy, Riza, Hughes and many others see themselves as murderers, not protectors. There are a lot of other cases, but I think the point is clear. I just like how different FMAB female characters are. Thank you for the video! I agree that a female good character is foremost just a good character. There are specific cases where being female is necessary to the themes or struggles, but the overall principle stays.

I love your comment but disagree with the bit of FMA being anti-militaristic show, for starters a huge part of the main cast are in the military, hell the MC is also a dog of the military. The thing that sets FMA apart from how alot of media espeically older ones depict the military is that like you showed later that the soliders are also human, they make mistakes and have done things they aren't proud of, and while the examples shown are unique to the miltiary perspective are themes anyone can relate with. Also if anything the show displayed how a corrupt government affects its people and in alot of cases in the story the military folks were the ones bearing most of those affects. I would say its not pro or anti-military at the very least.

This was because Ozai suggested that he should have his brother's birthright to the throne since he still had a son, to which Azulon decided a fitting punishment was killing his only surviving grandson. Family issues all around here, this is just the tip of the fire lord family iceberg.
@remo27 Жыл бұрын
"She grew up in a household where her mother convinced her father to murder her grandfather to seize power..." NO, that is simplistic to the extreme. I mean, sure if you forget that "Grandpa" was angry at 'dad' for trying to convince him to elevate him instead of the rightful heir, his brother and this at a time when said brothers son just died. So what does grandpa do? Why orders dad to kill Azula's brother! That will teach him(dad)! Of course 'dad' doesn't care for his son because his son isn't a useful tool (prodigy) like Azula. So in his own words: "And I was going to do it too." Thus, as far as the canonical materials go Zuko and Azula's mom(who had no real power in the family and was basically a peasant girl who Ozai literally forced to marry him), in order to spare her sons life, made an undetectable poison for dad so that grandpa would seemingly die of natural causes overnight (I mean, he WAS old). "Dad" not only got the power he wanted but also got rid of the wife he was now tired of (for defying him and never loving him or being 100 percent loyal to him, but crap, the man kidnapped her and either threatened or downright tried to kill her chosen fiance) via banishment. That's the whole story. As for how she gets along with Azula, it's obvious she TRIED since Azula manipulates her at like age 7 to get her older brother to play with her and child Mai and child Ty Lee. She simply doesn't know how to parent a child psychopath (I doubt anyone in the entire Avatar world does) and probably tried to discipline her which not only would backfire with Azula (Why doesn't mommy always love and praise me like daddy esp when I'm mean to my stupid brother or other inferior people?) but would also cause Ozai to argue with or threaten her. In short, a very bad take.

If I remember it correctly there was supposed to be an episode of Kuviras flashback. But nickelodeon cut the budget at that and instead we got an useless recap episode. I was a little bit disappointed when I found that out because I really like Kuviras fighting style and she could be a more interesting villain
@ningmushii Жыл бұрын
I would’ve made Kuvira’s backstory/story something like this: She’s the legitimate child of the earth queen. She would never know of this (until later ofc) and end up at zaofu somehow. Suyin would take her in and teach her metalbending, which like Korra she would excel in, even better than Suyin and lin. Suyin could be asked multiple times from Tenzin and the other councilmen/the soon to come president of republic city that she needs to find a way to denounce the earth queen because she’s abusing her power (maybe she’s trying to do what Kuvira basically does in the series.) Since Suyin will repeatedly oppose this idea, Kuvira (being her most trusted guard) would offer to convince people of the earth to support Suyin. Suyin would object saying that it’s too dangerous, leaving Kuvira upset. So what does she do? She leaves to go to the earth kingdom anyways, and then she meets Wu, who takes interest in her and brings her to the palace. Along the way he would tell her about how he’s next in line for the throne, because the earth queen has no heir. The earth queen would recognize Kuvira as soon as she arrives and tells her the truth? Why? She doesn’t want Wu to take the throne even after she’s no longer queen. Kuvira would refuse and won’t believe her and try to arrest her. Ofc it doesn’t work and she’s locked up. She could spend who knows how long in there. Suyin would later come looking for her as she realizes she’s gone and comes to the earth kingdom. Then yk she’d try to negotiate with the earth queen, but then the earth queen would villainize her. Let’s say that Toph’s family had some land that they maybe manipulated the earth king to get. Or think of it like modern rich folks who exploit poor people or something for their land. Let’s say she purposefully lead them to where Kuvira was imprisoned so that Kuvira could hear part of the conversation. Then she would free Kuvira and let her go but Kuvira would refuse as she thinks that Suyin is bad. Then she’d end up taking her role as the heir of the throne. This could have happened during season 3 when we’re not focused on Korra or the airbenders or Zaheer. Then by season 4, instead of a 2 year skip make it 5. So it’s a bit more believable that Kuvira was doing everything she did. This way it makes sense for her to dislike Korra and call her weak, and even dislike suyin. Or…she could be apart of the red lotus (all 4 villains actually) and be a double agent for the earth kingdom, zaofu, and the red lotus all together. Her backstory then could be that she was picked up by the red lotus (before they would try to kidnap Korra) when she was younger because they thought she was the avatar. However after they discovered that is was Korra, they would forget about her until she’s imprisoned. Amon, unalaq, or even unnamed red lotus members could raise Kuvira. Then when she’s probably around 10 or smth she’d pretend to be a orphan and Suyin picks her up and teaches her metalbending and she becomes a pro at it. Her job would be to assassinate the leaders (maybe she should even succeed at the earth queen) then take over. However she would forget her mission (like the others) for her own personal gain (power) and need to be taken down, with Korra doing so.

It's kinda sad that it's gotten to this point with female characters. They just keep making the fact that they are 'strong feminine role models' as both a promotion point and the key character trait, rather than just letting them exist and have room to breathe in their setting. It sorta reminds me of similar situations in the past where the proverbial pendulum in Hollywood overcorrected... How black characters were token ones or made light of, then instead we got a streak of "magic black man" type films such as Bagger Vance or Green Mile. The same thing happened with gay characters suddenly going from the butt of jokes to every woman's wise best friend and unable to do wrong, once Will & Grace took off and they realized just how profitable the demographic could be. This whole poorly written "strong woman" phase we've been seeing just seems like that same pendulum, overcorrecting in response to the Me Too movement and all the various Hollywood scandals that came out. They're not well written characters so much as they are the studios attempting to distance themselves from controversy and pat themselves on the back.

Lean into it. Have her be a bending genius, master everything by like 10 years old. Have the world see her as not just the avatar, but as a Monster. Have her fights be resolved easily, have the main conflict come from her trying to relate to regular people. Her struggle not to become stronger but to become human. Instead we got this half and half where she's really strong, but all her problems are just "am I good enough" even though she was introduced as someone strong with confidence bordering on arrogance with the talent to back it up. But somehow as someone who should, by all means, be so far and away stronger than everyone she could ever meet. She just isn't. She loses and struggles in terms of not being strong enough where she absolutely should be, to the point of it not being a challenge. And that's where they missed it with Korra. Anyone with that take immediately loses all credibility to me. She took 12 years of training with dedicated masters to actually come even close to mastering those 3 elements. Aang on the other hand did it in a summer vacation at 12 years old. Think about that.

My main issue with She-Hulk isnt even how she was written, well partly, its that she continually acts like she has extreme trauma compared to all the guys around her and acts like she has worse trauma than Bruce, but if anyone has read the comics they’d know Hulk was actually another personality he had as a kid that came to life from the gamma and the reason he had this mixed personality disorder was from years of abuse from his father, She Hulk has everything handed to her while Hulk struggled every single moment of his life and she thinks she had it worse

This was a great video. Growing up as a young woman watching characters like Toph and Raven always inspired me. I feel like a lot of the “strong woman” characters now a days are really toxic and cringy. I don’t feel represented by She Hulk at all, I’m fact I feel like a lot of the characters like She Hulk are actually insulting to women. I will never compare those two shows. What i like about Korra was that she wanted to be the Avatar while Ang didn't. And that way i love season 3 and 4 the most because of the consequences of what that did to her own identity. She wanted to be someone people needed in a time where the Avatar was not needed. I just wish they did season 3 after season 1 and jumped over season 2 except for the lore part of the spirit world and the Avatar orgin. But yes i could have been better.

If you want to write a strong woman, make sure to have them remind the audience of their gender every 30 seconds, or else, how would we know? Make sure to have them explicitly say "I am a woman," at least once. Also, make sure they never act like a real human woman, as realism is offensive Additional note: fiction is also offensive, so make sure that you don't draw women with boobs, boobs are a myth, and do not exist.

Well tbh just give the character a female appearance. I dont think its a crime if i made robot chick with above average abilities and has personality flaws of short temper that she learns to grow from. I can say for me personally i just have issues when female is a lead or mc character and end up or just as useless as a side character female which is pretty common. Not saying we dont have male fodder characters just that more often then not male lead/ major characters arent stomped by fodder or minor antagonist compared to the female leads. I do think there are good stories where women actually struggle in a male dominated society. My favourite Hindi movie is called Dangal. It's about the first female gold medalist from India in wrestling. The amount of sexism and harrassment she had to face, and the lack of resources to help her and her sister the entire way, made them great underdogs. We had their village calling them derogatory terms and calling them men, to watching them in the world scene cheering for them by the end. Its not sexist to acknowledge that there are barriers to women in our world. I think it's alright to not address this in fantasy, but if your society is sexist then you have to.

@@toasterowens8916 Most impressive, yes, but don't forget -- the boy was master airbender by the age of twelve. As to the feats, let's see... Aang mastered waterbending from scratch in the span of two months and was generally very good at it from the start. Aang also learned and performed lightning redirection after only practicing it for less than a couple of days. Aang took out, and I quote, "a dozen" of fire navy ships BY HIMSELF during the Siege of the North and only stopped because there was simply too many for him to tackle. Aang and his gang assaulted the Earth King's Palace and made a mockery of their defensive force. Granted, he wasn't alone there -- but still, quite a feat. Aang stood his own against Fire Lord Ozai (considered one of the best firebenders) empowered by the comet and could even kill him with lightning redirection if he didn't choose the other option. In that same fight he took out Ozai's blimp with just a couple of precise stone throws btw. In "Fortuneteller", Aang saved the village FROM A FUCKING VOLCANO and froze the lava with his airbending. Again, the boy's twelve. Should I remind you that Korra struggled against non-benders and was defeated by them on numerous occasions? Highly trained non-benders, but still.

I think it is possible when writing a character to start from anywhere, provided you do it with nuance. If you start with a badass and then make them female, but your understanding of what it means to be a badass isn't nuanced, the character likely won't be interesting. I'd say it's harder to start with gender and then work towards other traits since gender is such a complex subject, but so long as your understanding of gender is nuanced, it can work.

Every female character from Walking Dead could have sucked if they didn't provide a believable character arc. Carol was the weakest person in the entire series and by the 4th season, she was a female Terminator and it was brilliant. Michone was introduced as a badass, ninja chick but her origin story and efforts to become a trusted member of the group, are what made her a fan favorite. And as much as a hardass as she was, she also demonstrated a softer, maternal side.

But by the end of the 2nd season, most of the women have made progress with their combat skills. But the thing that I think TWD did better than almost any show, was create believable tactics for a 120 lb woman to employ against much larger opponents. Sometimes they will act like helpless little puppies and then get the jump on them. Or they will set a creative trap or diversion... stuff like that. I actually have thought of a simple change to Kuvirah's story that could've made it make more sense, and that would've been giving a reason she chose to rise to power in the first place, or more specifically, why she became a soldier in the first place. Kuvirah's father was a soldier of the army who she idolized but after a mission to get rid of bandits goes wrong, her father ends up as one of the hostages to the bandits. Kuvirah wanted to rush in to save him but her superior continued to order people to step back and give the bandits what they want till the hostages were safe. But when it came time for the hostages to be delivered, there were less hostages returned than recorded. When the soldiers try to rush the bandit base, it would be found the bandits made their escape and that the remaining hostages were dead days long before the exchange. Kuvirah blames the officer in charge for her father's death and decided to rise through the ranks to make sure there wouldn't be an incompetent leader ever again. The death of the Earth Queen was just an opportunity for an even higher position to spread her influence and ideals throughout the entire earth kingdom. Which is when we start seeing cracks in her character. She may have united all the major cities but you can never get rid of every bandit in the kingdom despite how much she tries to, which is when she comes across the bandits that killed her father with the rising tension and a bit of mocking from some idiot bandits, she wouldn't lock them up but slaughter them. And it didn't help that the people didn't mind either way, praising her regardless as a hero. This would've been the reverse Katara incident where she met the killer of her family only to choose the option to kill him do to the stress of having so many people relying on you. And as she became more obsessed with having everyone following her ideals, wiping out more and more bandits, the areas that she was originally allowing to live on their own without her influence she was now pushing to sign which is when she reaches republic city and her decision to fire the cannon. "A leader needs to decide when to act" but a ruler must decide "when is it enough" and because of this conflict started by her father's death do to the decision to wait by her superior officer, she choses to act, no matter what happens because of it. It was the wrong decision. A leader must know their enemies to make the right call. The bandits that killed her father would've been known by the leader to be sadistic and blood thirsty, making the decision to hold back and meet their demands a bad decision, but Kuvirah's decision against the avatar and leaders of republican city, good people who she shouldn't have needed to fight with.

I generally agree with the takes but I feel like he def missed the point with Korra. The story of the show wasn’t to master all of the elements, there wasn’t a big bad to defeat like in the original show - in fact they were in an era of peace. Like they established many times in the show there really wasn’t a need for the avatar. The main story in Korra were social issues unlike in the og where it was very straight forward - big bad man wants to rule everything because he thinks he’s better and needs to be taken down. I’ve heard someone say that Aang and Korra would’ve done better in each others stories, and I agree. Aang was much more diplomatic, sympathetic, and introspective. While Korra had a better natural talent for bending and was headstrong. But yeah all I was really trying to say was that the legend of Korra wasn’t about mastering the elements, it was about introspection, grey areas, etc. I can understand why you’d think it’s a bad story if you think it’s just supposed to be about mastering bending.

The amount of trauma that just breaks you and left so hurt it’s easier to go bad than risk what remains to try for the good. I think you kinda missed the mark with Korra here Nux. I do agree her being overpowered from the start makes her hard to relate to her struggles but she does have emotional struggles. Because its literally pointed out throughout the series she wants to be the Avatar so bad she never learned to be a good person and to accept herself. She lived sheltered without ever seeing the world to the point where the moment she gets the opportunity she jumps at it. Yes she abuses her powers because she never emotionally matured from being a kid, so she is boastful and prideful. So most of the time throughout the series her development is the inverse of Aang where she learns to not be stronger but become a better person. Its also why Air was so hard for her to learn because it requires more emotional maturity to understand and master. Aang was the total opposite, while he was a kid he got through all his emotional struggles instantly. He just really had issues using his power and accepting the role of being the Avatar. I mean seriously his entire race gets whiped out and the next episode he is doing something goofy and fun. Maybe he is doing it to hide the pain but in general emotional trauma rarely cripples Aang throughout the series. Sure he is not the most skilled bender and yes he had to struggle for his power, but he never had to struggle to be a mature human. So to put their character arcs together we see that there is a nice parallel between the two and both have genuinely good stories to tell. Aang's story is about responsibility, and Korra's is about maturity. Its just people have issues seeing that because both characters are such a juxtaposition of each other.

She basically is a more "neutral" version of Azula but she is extreme in her ideologies to completely unite the earth kingdom INCLUDING republic city. I can see how her extreme nature could trigger you but I still think that you just laughed at both of them without getting the background information right or straight-up omitting them.

To be fair, belatrix was a side character, the simp to the bad guy. There was no reason for her to be anything beyond having always being crazy and madly in love with a murderous psychopath.

L take on asuna … completely missed the point of their relationship early on give it another watch. Kirito’s purpose in asuna story arc initially is that he gave her a new outlook on life and she even clearly states it later on that she was sad and depressed feeling she was losing time in the real world and kirito taught her that she wasnt just losing time in the real world but getting to live a life in this new world. Theres more depth to their relationship than u lead on so def think u should give it a rewatch or watch the new progressive films thatll be releasing over the next few years detailing the story from her perspective. No not a SAO shill have plenty of gripes wit the story but overall i am a fan.

Honestly, with characters like Korra and Ruby Rose, I can’t help but feel like the writers are getting off on the pain inflicted to them. Then you have issues like with Marvel. X men is a big one. Jean Grey for instance had a whole story where this encouraged abuse of her power by Xavier and the exploitation of the Hellfire club unlocked Dark Pheonix; a form that was evil, power hungry and something that she liked but she killed herself so it wouldn’t happen again after she destroyed an entire solar system. I bring her up because, when they brought her back, they removed all blame from her so she could be a hero again. The best written Jean is definitely one who acknowledges that she is Pheonix and doesn’t want to realise that she’s a bad person. However, it feels like some writers treat her like this precious doll to make her entirely innocent. Maybe that’s why i like Emma Frost more. She knows she’s been awful but has her own ethos and still tries to be better in her own way. It’s a recurring thing that she’s often disliked by many of the other women who respect her but that hasn’t stopped her from making friends or being beloved by her students. Shame that recent movies and tv series had put Storm to the background.

the new Asuna movies are way better at showing her character arc and how she earned lightning flash though.

I remember watching yu gi oh as a kid and every time Téa attempted to contribute to the situation, she was always written as just “the fourth person in this friendship ring” Now, Tristan wasn’t any better 😂 but I felt like it was lacking a well written female identifying friend seeing as besides Joey and Yugi’s absolutely boy toy love for each other, the other two just felt like extra Thanks Nux, I love that you always seem on the edge of being cancelled but you truly provide a great commentary on the things you make 🤘🏽

8:30 to be fair, they fixed most of these problems with asuna in the abridged version by witty entertainment. Which many have pointed out is a better version over all of the series.

47:43 Actually, this is a lesson by itself. A good woman just by her existing and pretending to believe in her man will make the man do everything in his power to live up her her expectation. There are men that literally only succeed because their woman motivates them. Granted, this is not the best case scenario, but non the less, it does happen. Basically it was written so that the lovable women that are “side characters” can have something relatable to themselves so that they can focus on being the excellent cheerleaders that they actually enjoy being.
@jourdanfarquharson4697 Жыл бұрын
Akiza still the best the yugioh female cuz she did things other than being a solely a cheerleader. She was able to face the danger along with her other fellow signers and seek to better herself to protect those she cared about. Even if it is from her attraction to yusei she chose to take the risk that comes with being a turbo duelist and learn to use a runner. Tea was really just eye candy

I will never understand why companies think that a female character that is strong can’t act like a female
@KamiAnimeS1 Жыл бұрын
We all know what the problem is just don’t transform male characters into female characters. And just make a new characters you don’t need a shit on either character to make it. New character seem better. Just write them to do more impressive stuff or even train more. And that goes for anything like if your shows an action show computers whatever it is.

This is my problem with Millie in Helluvaboss. Shes so powerful all the time, yet the easiest to put to the side. Y? cause shes not really strong, shes just writtten to do what needs to be done. Shes tough? gotta knock her out so the real characters can be devolped. 25:40 also shwos my prob with Stella. Shes evil, phyco, but apparently for no reason. No innertermoil no feelings, just the apitimy of evil.
@LathropLdST Жыл бұрын
Nah. True with Millie, but see Stella wirh Andrealphus. She is a brat accustomed to have her way. She is roped in this arranged marriage as much as Stolas is. She was likely promised a fairytale marriage and was instead humiliated in the seven circles. That's enough to make a brat like her explode. A supreme being like Ozzy is getting his comeuppance because of his affair with Fizzarolli. Stolas being frisky with an imp is enough cause of ridicule among the Ars Goetia. Stella is doing as expected, it's you who cannot read between lines. Can also help to have grown up seeing this kind of disastrous unions pan out, but you are merely being superficial instead of analytic. Also, take some time to work on your ortography, you are giving everyone that reads you an aneurysm.

I have a single disagreement with you Nux. Mai Valentine is a cool and good female character. She's a skilled duelist, strong when she needs to be. But also kind and caring. She gives food to the gang during Duelist Kingdom, she gives Yugi some of the tokens to get into the finals, she gave Joey the card he needed to continue in the tournament in order to get the money for his sister's surgery. She is both a good person, and a strong woman who doesn't take any shit.
