Hey James. How often would you empty the reel or a spool and check the line and then rewind it? Can you remove a damaged segment of line and tie back together or should you just replace the line? If you retie, what knot would work for this?

very important to always carry a spool/reel and, also, to be comfortable deploying it! thanks for all the great content!

What size Dacron line do you use? And where do you get it?

That was reelly interesting!!! Sorry, I had to. So, I have had issues with the flat Dacron line twisting when used on my finger spools. Does it do the same thing on the reel, or how do you keep it all wound flat?

On a finger spool that happens because you wind the line around the spool, instead of the spool to wind in the line. On a reel, you wind the spool, so the line should theoretically go back onto the reel the way it came off. In practice there will be some twists in the line, but not as many as with a spool.

Hey James, thank you for the video. Maybe you can make a video with your experience on comparision of decompression diving in cold vs warm water . That would be interesting , because here in germany normally water is very cold and warmth has a great influence on decompression quality.

Do you mark any distances on your reels James? Great video BTW. Love the quick tips!

For a line laying reel, that's not of much use. You'd use line markers for that purpose. They have the added benefit of pointing you towards the exit. For a spool or reel for deploying a dSMB, it can be useful to mark your line at 5 or 6 meters for a safety stop.

Those huge reels are hard to maneuver, a couple of the explorers I know prefer a couple of 400ft reels rather than carrying a single larger reel.

Reely corny jokes! Aside from the cheesiness another awesome video, esp for divers looking to get their first reel or to replace their current one, on what features to look for in a reel.

Great joke man… Totally going to use that against my 9 year old. I’m consuming everything I can about scuba and skills I can work on out of the water. Waiting to be able to pick up a job before I continue my batshit crazy be in the water once a week.
