What's The Difference Between A Lift Bag and a DSMB? Quick tips are back! Number 32. We are looking at the differences and similarities between Lift Bags and SMBS or DSMBs. Which should you buy? What are they used for? How do you dive with each?
This is a viewer-requested video. Let me know in the comments what other Quick Tips videos we should make.
DSMBs or delayed surface marker buoys differ from SMBs (Surface Marker Buoys) in that they are designed to be deployed from depth whilst scuba diving. SMBs are only meant to be inflated on the surface. Both are designed to mark your position and alert boats to your presence.
These differ from Lift Bags which are designed to raise inanimate objects that have sank. River treasure, lost cars, lead weights all can be brought to the surface with a lift bag. In the James Bond film Casino Royale, you even see a Venice building being held afloat by a series of lift bags!
Thanks as always for watching!

Do the colours of the DSMB not matter in the US as much as the UK? Over here a yellow DSMB usually is launched to signify a diver in need of assistance, or an orange/red one is just for a diver below marker.

@mattiafarronato9484 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, only one question: is the color code standard? Because I was practising shooting a DSMB with a friend in a lake which has become sort of a "gym" for divers, he had a yellow DSMB, shot it, and we surfaced like 10 minutes later. Other divers at the lake came to us syaing that a yellow one is to be considered a "real emergency one", and they were getting ready to come to check on us.

Some consider yellow to be emergency color, probably more so in tech when doing decompression at depth. I use orange to avoid any confusion.

Bought a yellow one and all the seasoned divers told me to buy a red one as it signified emergency issue incoming. Someone said ech divers use it to note a dangerous incident has happened and to prepare on the surface for a diver emergency

If they were considering it a 'Real Emergency' then why had they not come down already?? 10 minutes is far too long for a check up!

Great video as usual! Just one question, wouldn’t a DSMB work as a small lift bag?
@DiversReady
@DiversReady 2 жыл бұрын
It can for small items, but is too unstable for anything heavy (i.e. over 50% of the bags lift capacity.)

I was on a liveaboard in Egypt a few years back, chatting to another instructor from a UK agency. He asked what my favourite course to teach was and I mentioned DSMB. He jokingly said about PADI will do anything for money and charging people to show them how to put a sausage up just proves it. Anyway, it was at the end of the first check dive and we were all asked to deploy a DSMB. Guess which guest was at the surfface before he had even attached his DSMB to the line??? He wasn't too impressed when I went up to him afterwards and said 'That's why I teach the DSMB course' I've seen far too many people have near disasters as they think it's a simple task of blowing into a bag!

@@iangriff2170 totally agree! Not nearly as easy as most think it is - including me. I watched a couple of good divers struggling with it the first couple times out practicing with it.

A DSMB with closed bottom is the way to go. Filling with a reg is not the way to go because your gear can get caught in it as you inflate because of that v shaped harness at the opening. You generally don't even need more than 2 breaths and often they also have a valve that is compatible with an inflator hose (but does not latch - for safety). Also it can flop over on the surface due to wind or not having weight on the line and the air can come out if it has an open bottom... Making it sink and leaving you potentially in a mess of line.

James, I'm confused by one of your comments re: the DMSB. Why would you need an over-pressurization valve on a marker buoy with an open end at the bottom? Wouldn't excess gas be expelled from the open end long before the buoy reached its burst limit? I'm sure I missed something. Thanks!
@Tradesatwork
@Tradesatwork 2 жыл бұрын
It's not actually an open end, it's a one way valve system so the air passes through to inflate but can't deflate through it. I have the same DSMB, great unit.
@Mike-bq4ot
@Mike-bq4ot 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tradesatwork Thanks for your explanation. I've always heard to keep the line taut on an open ended DSMB to keep it upright on the surface & thus to avoid it flopping over and the gas escaping thru the open end. Are there different styles of open-ended DSMBs? I notice that Dive Rite calls it a "funnel-shaped, anti spill baffle". Does the narrow end of the funnel have a flap or cap that blocks gas from escaping?
@Tradesatwork
@Tradesatwork 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike-bq4ot some DSMBs don't have an opening to fill with a second stage, they only have the oral / low pressure fill valve. If your going to get one I recommend getting one with the opening at the bottom as well as it's easier IMHO. Once they're inflated no air escapes out of the bottom. The main reason for keeping some tension on the DSMB when doing your safety stop is so it stays upright on the surface making it more visable.
@kevindavison6019
@kevindavison6019 2 жыл бұрын
I was also confused by this I thought the only difference being wheather or not it was attached to a line and spool on the bottom . I use one of the closed ones without an overpressure valve but as I am launching it from only like 20 feet deep I fill it with one breath of air and it expands on the way up and never has any overpressure issues anyway. If I was launching it as an upline from a deep wreck or to mark a piece of salvage I might use something different. Right tool for the right job as they say.
