Thankyou for the clear info. I had no warning and straight into emergency. 17 days later came out of hospital with a stoma. Then 8 months later had a reversal opp. So about 14 months before I had recovered. Not an experience I would wish on anyone. Doctors and nurses were terrific. I was 77 at the time and otherwise in good health. Cheers from Australia.

My husband developed a colo-rectal fistula from diverticulitis and he was scheduled for surgery. However, by the time the surgery was going to take place he had not had symptoms for months. I asked the docs, if it could have healed on its own, as I had put him on a soft diet and gave him aloe juice. They all said no, it could not heal. We finally insisted on another pet scan and low and behold, the fistula had healed over!!!!!! These anecdotal stories count!!!!

Excellent video Doc. I’m 57 but had my first bout of DV at 44. I had none of the typical triggers; I was/am fit, exercise regularly, eat well (but do eat red meat), drank plenty of fluids, and never had any “going” problems. I do have relatives who had it early so suspect there’s a genetic link. Currently on my second bout in 60 days and on Cipro & Metro (I really don’t want to take Cipro given the potential side effects and I hate destroying my biome). Surgery was recommended in ‘18 but I’ve been working on diet to delay. Very informative video for us sufferers so thank you.

@@gloriaolvera3342 Hi, sorry to hear you're in the ER. I'd listen to your doctor because I don't know the severity of your situation. However, I prefer Amoxicillin as I believe (at least for me) that it has less side-effects and it works for me (but does take a little longer). I want to stay away from Fluoroquinolone antibiotics because, again for my body, I get the side-effects and those side-effects seem to last. If you're in the hospital then you might have severe pain and/or potential for perforation which could lead to sepsis. They may need to clear your infection fast and Cipro might be the best route. I would just do your homework in terms of future use of those types. I have found that going on a liquid diet at the first sign of pain, using stool softeners for 2-3 days, and some light walking really helps me past any flare-ups. Best of luck to you.

I had a bout with diverticulitis two years ago. Terrible pain and ended up going to the ER. I was given IV Toradol and it dramatically reduced the pain. CT scans followed, and the diagnosis was confirmed. After waiting several hours for additional lab results to come back, I was sent home with prescriptions for TMP-SMX, metronidazole and Percocet. I was also instructed to take the narcotics if needed, otherwise try Tylenol and Advil together for any pain. As it turns out, the TMP-SMX and metronidazole went a long way towards addressing both pain and inflammation, so I ended up not needing the narcotic medication I was prescribed. The next day, I was feeling tons better, and by the second day, more or less back to normal.

I've dealt with this for 3 decades. Numerous hospitalizations, perforations, abscesses, serious infections, twice leading to peritonitis. It nearly killed me twice. My diet was pretty restricted. I had to avoid anything with seeds or other types of non-soluble fiber. I was pretty careful and still ended up hospitalized 2-3 times a year. Finally, in 2014, surgeons removed 25 centimeters of my sigmoid colon. It stopped the infections, but now l often deal with alternating constipation and diarrhea. I haven't discovered a diet that balances things out for a sustained period, but I'm grateful to not be in constant agonizing pain.

Your video explained more to me of the various types of diverticular disease than I was aware. One point however…I think twice mistakenly during your video you mentioned ‘ascending’ colon when you meant to say ‘descending’ and that could lead some people to become confused, e.g. Judy Carter’s comment. Overall, fantastic though. P.S. I still want to know how the two sections of colon were actually anastomosed? Maybe I should remain ignorant on that subject? :-)

My Dr recommended I see a specialist and an appointment was made, however, two days later I collapsed and haemorrhaged through my backside, my wife called an ambulance and I was rushed to hospital my BP also crashed they said. I was in hospital for four days, I have no idea what medication I was given, in hospital I had the camera down my throat but all was clear. I was released from hospital and booked in for the camera up the other end, I have to say I was stoic and watched the procedure via monitors, I was impressed how clean my 62 year old colon looked, it was spotless! However, the Dr said there where signs of Diverticulitis but no signs of a haemorrhage, to sum this up I really have not got to the bottom of this (pardon the pun) my GP hasn't really explained to me what happened it would be interesting on your thoughts.

Thank you so much for asking & it just shows just how kind I’m certain that you are for asking, “what’s up guys”, because it’s been a long hard week already and it’s only Tuesday can you imagine that but since you asked, “what’s up guys” I will certainly tell you that things could be better but then they could be worse also and isn’t that always the case with life ha ha no matter what’s happening it could always be worse and no matter what is happening it could always be better, although there was one time, in fact actually there’s been a few times in my life where when somebody ask me “what’s up” I could actually tell him that things couldn’t be better, “what’s up” is that things are going so well but then I stop and think you know I suppose something else great could happen and things could even be better so to answer your question “what’s up guys”, I’ll begin by saying things are actually looking up kind of like Paul McCartney wrote that “everything is looking better” and then the severely negative John Lennon wrote, “couldn’t get much worse“, which means obviously that Paul McCartney was an optimist and John Lennon was a pessimist and we all certainly all know that therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” considering they are two people which certainly fills out the definition of guys plural, they would say what they said in that song which they wrote many songs in their career but can you believe they only wrote Beatle songs or actually all the Beatles songs they wrote were before they were 30 years old which really is astonishing therefore if you were to ask them “what’s up guys” they would have been all over the road from the beginning to the end of the Beatles career yet you ask me “what’s up guys” and I can tell you that things are looking pretty good, I’ll come back later to finish answering your question but thank you so much for asking that question.

@@karensimons6313 The most important thing is your diet. Four years ago when I had diverticulitis after eating a bunch of dried figs. I was prescribed specific antibiotics for 9 days and was told to be on a liquid diet for a week. I started to feel much better than I went on a planned trip to Europe. Since I felt much better, I started to eat regular food (after 2 weeks)and got another bout of diverticulitis. I was very constipated and felt really tired. I went to see an excellent gastrologist doctor, who prescribed antibiotics again and told me to stay on liquid diet and wrote down everything I should stay away from. Number one was seeds, meaning no strawberries, blueberries raspberries figs, popcorn tomatoes etc, drink at least 2 liters of water. And the same exact happened for the third time, after one week, felt better started to eat regular food. ( minus seeds) Went back to the same doctor, who finally explained to me that I had to be on a liquid diet for much longer, like a month. It was difficult because I was in Europe staying at my relatives home. We started to make vegetable soups with a little chicken for protein and blended them in a blender, and natural gelatin with organic syrup,zero solid foodstuffs. After 2 weeks I ate like an egg and a few soft foods BUT CHEW THEM THOROUGHLY TO MAKE THEM LIQUID IN MY MOUTH. I came back home to US and continued same. All this took over one month, finally started to eat regular food except ALL SEEDS. After 4 years, 3 weeks ago I got diverticulitis again. Kept the same procedure and now started to eat soft foods meaning no beef except ground and of course no seeds or nuts or corn, which I never eat anyhow. Love the video. Why are the diverticula not treatable with some sort of surgery, by being backed up with more tissue or something that repairs those locations?

Thank you for this very well done and informative video. I wonder if you can help me. I had basically a full hysterectomy over two operations. After the first one there was a new abdominal pain in my lower left. I have tried for over 3 years to find the source of this pain but nothing. Please advise what the best test would be to check for diverticulitis or anything related. Again thank you for this excellent information presented so clearly.

so diverticulosis is the general condition and diverticulitis is the acute inflammatory occasion that might include infection as well, generally CT scan full blood count and CRP plus colonoscopy are the full package i had to be d,iagnosed, CT scan is the usual approach

I'm 22 and in my second year of nursing school. I often consider going into medical school but feel discouraged when I think about the massive debt I'll be in. Is it worth it?
@AZ-wg3eg4 жыл бұрын
@@DeathAngleZoe The debt is nominal, (in the grand scheme of things). Anecdotally, if you budget appropriately you can have your debt more than controlled in 2-4 years as an attending. Even primary care attendings have plenty of loan repayment opportunities, and federal incentives to live comfortably. You will do fine as a physician, even if you're shackled to federal loans or SallieMae for a few years.

@@AZ-wg3eg Thank you so much for your response. Did nursing school benefit you throughout medical school?
@AZ-wg3eg4 жыл бұрын
@@DeathAngleZoe but yes, I'm broke as shit now. It's not about money. This road will teach you delayed gratification. As an RN you have at least 10 years before you're an attending. That's if things go smoothly.

Thank you. The seeds and nuts have to be avoided just because they are hard? what if they boiled and cooked thoroughly to become soft would that be okay to eat? I'm just curious. Thank you again.

I always have issues on my RIGHT side, NEVER the left and have very frequent flare ups.Never use to ,but find more and more as i get older its a frequent issues. I "think" some factors that affect it , could be alot of red meat, and coffee, and dairy i have with coffee and chais drinks always.BUt theres never anything that backs that up and all DRs and videos always have conflicting information.

This is NOT True! Yes, everything I've read says that Diverticulitis is the result of a low fiber diet. I am a 50-year (WFPB) VEGAN, who has been studying nutrition for 50 years and i cook all of my own organic Whole Food recipe meals. I am 77 years old. You can imagine my shock when I got a colonoscopy and the doctor told me I had diverticulosis and told me to eat lots of fiber which has always been the main focus of my meals. I eat Chickpeas 5 times a week (Hummus, falafel, Vegan Tuna), avocados, black beans and tons of oats. Up until a year ago I had the most beautiful #4 Turds and now I've got constipation everyday with #1 Pebble turds. I want my regular bowel movements. Got app[ointment to a Gastroenterologist next month. Believe me when I tell you that no one is more conscious of what they eat than I am and here I sit completely dumbfounded!

If you have diverticulitis you should not eat hummus because it has Tahini which causes constipation. Black bean causes gas, and oats or oatmeal causes constipation if you have diverticulitis....I got all that information because I was diagnosed as having diverticulitis. The rest of your healthy food are acceptable.
