I was referring to Hollywood in general and I wasn’t saying that the Asian character should have characteristics that were the opposite of their stereotypes rather the character should just not focus on the fact that they’re Asian. Like, they can have qualities that fall into the Asian stereotype however that shouldn’t be the focus of the character.

I really felt that "these aren't bad stereotypes but I don't know how to feel about it." I hate that growing up, teachers and students alike just assumed that i would be good at math, and if i did badly on one test, the teacher would make a big deal about it in front of the whole class...math isn't easy for me, just because I'm Asian and like it! Heck I have a degree in math! And I struggled through it!

Its similar to the stereotypes about black people, like how they're supposed to be better athletically, be funny, be cooler. They're positive things but still stereotypes and can be used negatively. For example, many black roles have been being the funny guy, but then they rarely have the main role. Its still not right.

Late to the party, but submitting a thought in response to Tablo’s “Am I a racist to my own people?” In the effort to assimilate and to be accepted, many AAs have suppressed certain cultural values and practices of their elders (1st generation immigrants) to counter those stereotypes. Many have given up their Mother Tongue in the process. But of course, no one will be rewarded for this. I’m so glad you guys maintained your fluency in Korean. We need BILINGUAL superheroes, who can quote the Marx bros but also Confucius and Lao Tze. Oh, we need a RAPPING superhero, for sure! I don’t care if it’s Tablo or Mithra, Suga or RM.
