I’m also a non-diver - I’ve been watching dive videos for a ridiculously long time lol but I definitely know I don’t know anything about it lol. But my guess is, kinda along the lines of what they were saying, it seems like the more you do it the more intuitive it becomes, sorta like driving. I think of all the things I didn’t know when I first started driving, being nervous about it etc, and now it feels like it’s all just second nature. I don’t have to overthink things like changing lanes, or left hand turns, or check my speed every few seconds like I did when I was 16; and that ability only comes with the combination of info & lots of time “practicing” driving. No one is putting a 16yo on the interstate for their first drive, or behind the wheel of a semi truck or whatever. I think maybe a combo of information PLUS ‘practice at your current level’ is similar when it comes to diving? Start small and work your way up. Full disclaimer, I might be wayyyyy wrong haha - that’s just my best guess at why people can do it without freaking out the whole time like I would lol

Woody's comment at 17:17 spoken like a true DM "I wouldn't let go of him". No matter what your experience level anyone can have a freak incident of any kind, it's all how you react. Last month I had lost consciousness in an out at depth and my body and brain started symptoms of shock, hit a sudden cold thermocline, caused vertigo. I had let go and drifted away from the line. Luckily a very attentive buddy noticed he didn't see my light behind and backtracked apprehended the situation and made a safe assent. If he hadn't reacted right at that moment, I would not be here...

I can't stand fiction where it's clear that the author did zero research into something that I know a bit about. This is especially egregious when it comes to technology and hacking, movies and TV shows usually talk about it like it's magic, with explanations that make no sense at all. History is also usually misrepresented, even (or especially?) on the History Channel. So thanks for doing your due diligence so as not to come off as completely ignorant to those that actually know. At 6:00 it looks like at least one diver (possibly the buddy) approaches to help, but gets affected/scared by the vortex. My main observation is that many of the divers are using split fins which often cannot generate as much force as solid fins. Great content/reaction videos, keep up the great work! (Ex Divemaster)

Split fins are an abomination, and add fuel to the diving is for everyone fallacy

@Orca Whale . They are useless for maintaining a position in the water. Useless for any kick style besides a straight flutter kick. It’s simply A gimmick for newbies, or the hydro *infirm among us that don’t want to put in the effort and time to be aquatically competent . Diving isn’t for everyone, no matter what PADI tries to tell us
@Aurora700773 жыл бұрын
@Michael Taylors I understand where you’re coming from because I agree that split fins allow divers to get propulsion even from terrible technique but I just think diving is the best way to learn to dive. It’s okay to suck at first as long as the goal is to improve technique over time. I’ve only ever used paddle fins but it’s okay to prefer either, I just don’t get the vitriol against split fins 😂

It’s a show of not only a good person but a good instructor to put yourself in the others shoes and reminding yourself at what state that person is at. Instead of being arrogant about it, and then saying what a better approach would have been if you could have brought your stress down and maintained a clear mind. It’s refreshing. So many people are too quick to criticize without putting themselves in the others shoes. Always easier to have an opinion on safe dry ground. Great video

I was caught in a similar type of current on one of my first check out dives as a new open water diver. There was a rotation to it and also a substantial back and forth current. I was only in about 30 feet of water and I could see the ocean floor about 15-20 feet below me. Looking at the floor dramatically increased the vertigo and produced substantial nausea. I actually vomited into my regulator. I’m quite calm in somewhat stressful situations so I handled it just fine. My instructor and I calmly moved out of the current and then surfaced briefly to be sure everything was ok. We were then able to complete the remainder of the check out. Pretty interesting early experience.

Hi, great videos and discussions guys! This is here in Maldives what we call a Washing Machine current (whirlpool current). Caused by the current collision on the reef or the bottom topology(depending how it is formed). Mostly happens when you doing drift dives in strong currents. Based on what I see in the video all he gotta do is , (if he can) kick to reorient himself from the spinning, at the same time hit the inflater a bit. Keep hitting inflater until he ascents away from the center of the whirlpool, which has the strongest pull and dump when he's out. From the looks of it here the intensity of the pull doesn't have a very wide radius. I would say about 2-3 meters he need to ascent. You can tell this by observing the size of the bubbles escaping from the whirlpool. Its quite fun to get into one of those if you know what you need to do. Just take your dirty laundry, spin them around and hit eject ;) Not advised for the inexperienced thought. xD Also, what he's carrying is not a machete. Its a sort of a pointer/tank banger used to get attention, also can be used to hook yourself on the reef to during a drift if needed to.

My brother is a certified diver of some kind that I'm not exactly sure. He told me and our mother about how he almost died going into a cave once with a couple of friends, and how he was the last one leaving the cave after stopping in an air pocket. I somewhat appreciated the level of danger he was in when he told the story, but now I really know that I'm lucky to still have him in my life. He did not say if they were near a shore or in scuba gear when this happened. I think you guys are doing a great job of informing people about how to be prepared for the dangers of diving, and especially to be properly trained. 13:33 it looks to me like there are two people trapped in the vortex maybe 30 feet from each other. That’s probably why the other divers doesn’t want to come too close to the vortex cause what good can they do if they get trapped ALSO??! Nothing!!! So it’s wise for the others to wait for a better opportunity to reach out, maybe not approach when he is sinking but maybe when he starts to rise to the surface. I don’t know? What did the instructors in Palau tell you regarding vortexes, escaping one to be precise, Woody?

This is a great visual to show how low head dams are deadly. There is a 'vortex' like this that runs parallel to the dam with aerated water that will just hold anything or anyone. Extremely difficult to swim in aerated water. So what to do? If caught, go down - and 'crawl' your way along the bottom until you are spit out. Or so I am told. I have only pulled bodies out, often later when the water flow slows and the vortex isn't as strong.

As a surfer that has been caught in undertows and harsh rip currents (both above and below the surface) I may have something to add.. NEVER try to fight against the current (In this case swimming "up"). You will tire yourself out and die. You need to let yourself go with the current and swim at a right angel to the way you are being drug. Applied to this circumstance you would swim anywhere left or right.. and not worry about "up" (against the current). The current is usually narrow and you must get out of it, then re-assess the situation, form a plan, adapt and overcome. You can tell by the fish, you do not have to get that far away from where the bubbles are going down to be safe. His problem was trying to fight the current.. I'm not a diver (yet) so I am sure it's harder than it sounds.. but get your self horizontal and kick and paddle like your life depends on it. (while keeping your cool). Diving scares the hell out of me... but try an undertow when your surfboard leash snaps and the only breath you may ever get again is the one you hold in your lungs... and you are being sucked down and backwards out to sea.

This channel is great!!! I love the stories with professional commentary. I was taught to dive as a kid, but am scared of open, dark water and I didn't continue. However, my dad was a clearance diver in the Canadian Navy (he was the XO on the HMCS Cormorant). So I've listened to many dive stories, over the last 40 years, and want to say that even he is impressed and intrigued by this channel. Especially as he is only open water certified and enjoys learning. Thank you for providing a great learning source that is equally as entertaining.

I always love it when a Dive Talk video comes out. The pauses are usually welcome to me unless it goes on for several minutes. Your personalities are great!

I almost wonder if the guy's buddies didn't go to get him because he was flailing that knife around so much and they didn't want to get injured

What causes these crazy underwater vortex? What a fascinating phenomena of nature.
@chriscoker77943 жыл бұрын
Some vortices are caused just by the tide and the type of terrain going from larger to smaller inlets or vise versa and also deeper to shallower. Think about bottle necking for instance. I hope that may have helped answering your question. I'm sure that there are other reasons that I'm not aware of or mentioning. Maybe someone else will chime in for more answers.

That last bit of this video with you guys talking about your recent dive where Gus is trying to tie a line and Woody caught the current and got spit out leaving Gus in the dark...that was awesome...you guys should do more of that type of stories about your own dives. Including all the silly or goofy stuff that happens. Even including your dive buddies that were on that dive...like a chat about the dive once you get back on the surface then add in bits of the actual dive with your groups comentary back on the boat or shore.

Wow!! I'm a very novice diver and I never knew something like this vortex could happen. I think this should be talked about in beginning dive classes. Loving this channel.

fam- let’s not forget Cerrone’s Law* here: “Every Diver For Themselves” 🤣 this was a flawless execution of that. **do not adhere to this law, this is not a real law, it’s an inside joke among subscribers! please do everything you can to assist your dive buddies until you absolutely cannot any longer, thank you.* lol

To me it looks like they're trying to stay in it. I could be completely wrong here but it looks like they are having fun. The one guy is trying to stay in the vortex and allowing himself to spin in circles. It's almost like they're moving their selves into it and the guy up top is just filming it.
@DIVETALK3 жыл бұрын
That's not what I saw...at one point the diver is kicking hard and reaching to grab somebody's hand to try to get away

I love both woody and Gus style. They are very compatible and woody usually answers the questions that I’m wondering. He has a good way of putting himself in the viewers perspective
