Step-by-Step KISS Spirit Rebreather Assembly

Woody is a KISS Spirit Rebreather Instructor under PADI and IANTD, and he walks through the step by step detailed process we must follow to assemble and test the unit before a dive. He also explains at the end the basic functionality of how this rebreather works. This one is for educational purposes but may also help non rebreather divers understand some of our video terminology better. Hopefully this will serve as a useful learning tool.

Engineer too, here. Did you notice his oxygen sensor checks, are exactly the same as any instrumentation calibration & linearity check. I've done that procedure countless number of times, in the lab. I'm also an open water diver, but restrict myself to open circuit. A lot less complicated gear. Scariest thing underwater, is when I here prop screws. Other humans, in particular, a drunk boater, is one of the most dangerous things in the water !

20-ish years ago I went into diving with the explicit goal of doing tech diving and this was back when rebreathers was something really exotic. My anxiety disorder decided to have a ball with my diving and I ended up having to abandon it. It feels so good to see how far the tech has gotten and to live a bit through people a lot less cowardly than me, and to get reacquainted with stuff I used to live and breathe (pardon the pun). I never get enough of adventure and human ingenuity. Thanks Gus and Woody!

​@@Written... its just a throwback at one of the channel's videos where if I remember correctly a team of (certified I suppose) rebreather divers from the UK affirmed that the correct procedure is to break up your old sorb and mix it with new one which obviously resulted in problems underwater (mind you this was back in the day). Not a diver / not planning on diving however if I was this would be a great video to watch multiple times and refresh before I was going to go on a dive with a re breather. I understand why you are a diving instructor and also understand why learning to dive can be very anxiety inducing. Just to be clear this is much more complex then setting up regular dive gear. This is just for technical rebreather diving on this particular unit, the kiss spirit rebreather. Setting up open circuit gear is much easier and way less steps.

This video was great, very many steps to check it all, very impressive! Got my dry suit test dive planned for tomorrow, slowly building towards being cave diving ready. Figured a dry suit would be much better than a wetsuit, which I have been using over the past 12 years. Especially here in the Netherlands, where the water temperature is approximately 4 degrees Celsius at 20 to 30 meters. Thanks again and slowly moving to the 50k subscribers!!!👌👌👌

I’m an anesthesia provider and I use a closed system to vent my patients. You said you set your O2 flow at .75 LPM which is pretty much what I do with low flows. I use .5 lpm o2 and “room air” or .21% at .5 lpm as well roughly correlating to the same concentration. Our sodasorb last a long time too considering how many cases we do.

I loved this in depth explanation of how the rebreather works! I may have to watch it again just to make sure I understand everything. I was almost certified in open water diving way back in 1987. I became ill right before our final certification dive and never completed the course. I was just a teenager. I was quite ill off and on for a couple years. Then one summer at the beach I came back from swimming in the ocean and couldn’t move my arm very well. My mom saw that my elbow was swollen. When we got home she took me to some specialists. After a bit of sleuthing they discovered I had systemic lupus, and had probably had it since the start of puberty and it was what had been making me so sick. I also had photosensitivity meaning that the sun acted like a switch turning my lupus on and making it worse. I learned to swim early in the morning or at sunset, or in a pool at night. I wish so much I could go back and get certified. Way back when we didn’t have dive computers or anything fancy. Unfortunately, at this point in my life lupus has wreaked havoc on my body and I can barely walk, not to mention the sun is my nemesis. I live vicariously through your channel. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel! It is greatly appreciated. ❤️

Thank you! I've been so interested in learning more about rebreathers! I hadn't heard of them before mrballen when he was talking about using them during his navy SEAL days. I find the concept so fascinating, such an incredible invention. In many of the stories I've listened to they talk about rebreathers, but they breeze over all the important stuff. For a bit I thought it was something you could just grab and go... boy was I wrong about that. I see why you need special training to dive on a rebreather. It looks totally worth it though! All people who have interest in rebreathers should have to watch this video, it should be mandatory 😊

I love that you go all pink Woody! It's not often you see guys absolutely rock pink. I honestly had to buy a halcyon wing in pink camo just because it was pink. That and my neon pink OMS slipstream fins is my best purchase and the best part you're visable and easy to spot under water. Sooooo, I think it's time to add some explanation to the color pink. Many of you that know me certainly know that I believe that the ocean has "Ocean Soul". This soul is alive with life and energy. I believe when we dive in the ocean, we gain special healing powers. We ingest all that bio luminescence and it becomes a part of us. This is why I've been so addicted to it's magical powers since I was a baby (being born and raised in the incredible city of Ft. Lauderdale). Now let's look at what pink is thought to represent: sweet, nice, playful, cute, romantic, charming, tenderness, is associated with bubble gum, flowers, babies, little girls, cotton candy, and sweetness. The color of universal love of oneself and of others. The color pink represents caring, compassion and love. The pink color stands for unconditional love and understanding, and is associated with giving and receiving care. Since pink is a combination of red and white, both colors add a little to its characteristics. It gets the lust for action from the red color, and the white color gives it an opportunity to achieve success and insight. Passion and power from the color red, softened with the purity and openness of the white color completes pink color meaning. The deeper the pink color, the more passion and energy it radiates. Pink represents friendship, affection, harmony, inner peace, and approachability. Pink represents the color of breast cancer survivors, which I'm all too familiar with as well. Ocean Soul, inner peace, love, kindness, approachability, passion, power, gives care but needs care, sometimes full of action, sometimes calm and tranquil, ........ Pink, Ocean Soul, let the world be full of both.

Sadly pink as a colour has been put into a box as you described being girly, cotton candy, feminine and childish. For me pink is strong and vibrant that shows passion as you wrote Woody. When you described the bio luminousence I was thrown back to my first night dive in Thailand. I was quite nervous because I had no idea what it would be like because it was literally my first time. I remember it was pitch black and we were ready to descend I turned on my torch an we slowly started to descend into the ocean. I turned my torch around and buried it in to my bcd and started to wave my hand in front of me and from nowhere thousands bio luminous particles lit up and sparkled in the colours of the rainbow. This made such a strong impression on me and it was magical and I thought I've never seen such a beautiful thing ever! And I have been blessed with sering so many incredible and different marine life. I've had magical moments with different sharks, macro life, mantas, whale sharks, seahorses, turtles, nudies ( saw a blue dragon my first dive as certified diver ), flatworms, different types of ghost pipes, sea kraits, peacock mantis shrimps, box fishes, lobsters, stingrays, leopard sharks, grouper, travallys, barracudas, pipe fishes and so on, but that moment of that night dive will always be very special and a moment I will always treasure. It was there and then I really realised that I belonged in the ocean and it felt like the ocean was swept all around me like very soft black velvet. I felt safe and it was my calling to be with the ocean and I decided I want to make this into my job and career.

Okay, one thing that I have thought more than once while watching Dive Talk. To me, what you guys do on your checklists are really similar to running a trauma patient. There are certain steps that cannot be passed over or ignored. If you don't properly run every step, it could end someone's life. You can never take shortcuts. Period.

I just happened to notice all the o-ring connections and that you didn't mention something. I'm not a diver but becoming very interested in diving and being watching your videos. Nice job by the way really informative. I'm a retired offshore exploratory driller. Learned a lot about pressure and volume in that field. But anyway I just wanted to point this out about o-ring seals. You can look at them, rub your finger and feel of them the same way you did but unfortunately is the nature of o-ring seals to become weaker with each assembly. You may not feel or see anything wrong with them and still experience a failure when under pressure. Just humbly want to bring to your attention it would be a good idea to change those out on a regular basis. Per 100 feet of water depth =44.72 psi 300' ×.052×8.6= 134.16 psi I've seen many times when o-ring seals have leaked by on low pressure test with no evidence of bad seal, only knew after changing o-rings and retesting to get a good pressure test. Crazy thing is sometimes couldn't get a low pressure test at 100 to 200 psi and could ramp the test to 5,000 psi and it would hold. Just thought this might be some interesting information. Thanks for the great job you do on the videos I hope to get into diving soon.

I have never dived before. This actually makes me want to try it. I'm starting to feel like diving with a re-breather is the way to go. I'm sure all the supplies aren't inexpensive by any means. But if I planned on taking dive courses. I would want to just directly start on re-breather courses. Closed loop seems to be the way to go. I also feel like it's not that complicated. Your using a scrubber to eliminate CO2. I also heard that some experienced divers used to open loop get all clustered if and when they switch over. Wouldn't it just be best to be taught the best and most efficient way to dive first?

In a more recent video you talked about the depth rating on kiss rebreathers, not being certified to more than X depth. I think that is because of the manual system and the constant flow valve. If it goes deeper the ambient pressure and the set pressure of X per minute will cause problems, to little O2 or worse, way to much O2...

I realize this is an older video, however I am noticing genesis valves on your cylinders and as someone who works on tanks, I might recommend different valves for your cylinders. Reason being that the valve stems on genesis valves are too long and bend too easy. I have seen those valves fail after being knocked too hard and my concern is with you cave diving this could easily happen. I will admit the genesis valve is probably the most comfortable to carry a cylinder with however they are a bit fragile when banged around. Thermo, Blue steel or XS scuba valves are all very reliable and bullet proof.
