This was a great video for me - Thanks so much for creating this content. Could you possibly cover another covered call ETF for us concerning dividend payout. I’m getting started late in retirement savings and recently learned out (OILK) that has a high dividend yield that seemingly has a very stable pmt schedule over the past 10 years, plus essentially at the bottom of its stock price now. So, if I buy it now, it can most likely just go up. I’m mainly interested in the income since I’m about 5 years from retirement. Could you please give it a peek and maybe a video on it?

This does look like a great tool but I just lack the time to do all this. I do keep track of my dividends and each year they go up as I am reinvesting my dividends. On that In the Future tab, there is a annual amount invested field. But if you stop investing after 10 years, then it kind of looked like your formula was still investing $24k a year (I seen the stocks owned remained the same). I was just curious if your formula was still adding $24k onto years 11 to 30. But I'd think it shouldn't if you are living off dividends after the 10th year. Therefore, you organic growth would be way lower if you're not longer investing. Thanks for the videos and I enjoy watching! Good luck to all investors out there!

Hey Michael! I am actually very interested in JEPQ! It would be an alternative to QYLD. The difference between JEPQ and JEPI is the index it tracks. JEPI tracks the SP500 where JEPQ tracks the Nasdaq. Both are covered call ETFs. JEPQ should have a higher dividend yield over time. The nasdaq brings higher volatility and thereby generates more income (dividend in this case).

Hey buddy, welcome home. Hot as balls indeed. I've been waiting all week to ask you why vgt instead of vug on your roth pie. And would you consider adding small cap to it? I've been researching the vanguard ones, vb vbr vbk but ijr from Blackrock seems to beat it. Unless I'm doing the visualizer thing wrong again. Thank you, I believe my plan is almosted formed.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting 2 жыл бұрын
Well you will get more diversification with VUG. I like the heavier focus on technology in VGT but that’s only a personal opinion. Because I invest into VTI I also get broader diversification I’m fine with the higher concentration with VGT. I personally prefer VTI over picking small or mid caps. The challenge is you can never predict what will do better in a given year and that’s why I like VTI over picking small or mid caps - I’d rather just buy everything. But with that said I don’t think you could go wrong adding a low fee small/mid cap ETF like you mentioned.
@fabiGBOtown
@fabiGBOtown 2 жыл бұрын
@@DividendGrowthInvesting thank you Jake, I thought you chose VGT over VUG because it had a higher dividend yield (i was way off) i do like the holdings in vgt as well and it does seem to outpace vug by a bit. On the small cap stuff, my plan is to do voo, vgt, vbr (although I'm trying to figure out if ijr is better than vbr still) then reits and covered call etfs for my roth. Then my sep i might just go with vti and emerging markets i think. I might add schd there too. Still trying to figure out what to do. Then ill just get all the dividend stocks on my brokerage account. I'm so glad I have someone to chat with about this stuff, downside of working for yourself all your life is a lack of social life lol.

Hi Jake, sorry if I missed it or misunderstood, but you said "I'm going to show you how to get your weighted average." You then had us export our portfolio from Seeking Alpha, you then said "add a column for weighted average." But how do you get those percentages?
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting 2 жыл бұрын
Hey JP! At the 12:30 minute mark, I show the formula to calculate weighted returns in excel. =SUMPRODUCT(R31:R68,S31:S68)/SUM(R31:R68) The R in this case is the column with the weighting and the S here would be the dividend yield column. The R or S or numbers would depend on the fields in excel where you have the fields.
@unashamedly1776
@unashamedly1776 2 жыл бұрын
@@DividendGrowthInvesting My confusion is how you populated that R column. When you first opened your export you didn't have an R column, you then said "then we're going to add an additional column called weighting..." and it was already fully populated with weighted percentages. I'm just trying to understand how you came up with those percentages? Thanks
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting 2 жыл бұрын
@@unashamedly1776 ohh I'm sorry that makes it confusing. I added the R column before the video, otherwise it would have taken too long. Those numbers are based on my own personal portfolio weighting. You would put your weighting in that column.

You are describing the best case scenario. But what happens if market goes sideways for years? Similar to what happened to MSFT from 2000 to 2013. it didn't do much. Or $DJI from 1963 to 1982.
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting 2 жыл бұрын
In the early part of the video I mentioned that I try to take a conservative approach to this. With a 100% stock portfolio, the market has returned 12% a year from 1926-2021. Because my portfolio is more value focused, I calculate with around 8-9% total annual returns (dividend + capital appreciation). Here is the site I use in the video: investor.vanguard.com/investor-resources-education/education/model-portfolio-allocation
@Horcruxify
@Horcruxify Жыл бұрын
hi Jake, one thing I noticed with the calculator is that capital appreciation being high actually has a significantly negative effect on your dividend income. for example, given my current situation, my dividend income goes from 53K with a 10% capital appreciation to just 28K with a 20% capital appreciation (both in year 20). obviously, the 20% capital appreciation results in a significantly larger portfolio value. so I'm conflicted here.. if I want a higher dividend income by year 20, do I have to almost wish that my stocks don't grow as fast? or should higher capital appreciation be always preferred since the portfolio grows so much quicker (even though the annual dividends are lower)?
@Unbroken821
@Unbroken821 Жыл бұрын
I'm not Jake, but I too discovered this pattern you mention. I'm thinking it comes down to a kind of balance-scale trade-off, between dividend yield, and capital appreciation. I believe the answer to your question will ultimately have to do with your individual investing goals, and also especially your investing time horizon. For instance: If you want to have/use much dividend income rather soon (short time horizon), you'd likely prefer the stocks/etf's with higher dividend yield, at the expense of capital appreciation. But vice-versa, if you have a much longer time horizon -- since as you noted, those stocks with higher capital appreciation and lesser dividend yields, will most likely over a longer time (of course, assuming no surprises) actually contribute a much greater total portfolio value in the end. You can also shift your portfolio over time as well. Many dividend investors with longer time horizons say that they are willing to sacrifice a possibly much greater ultimate portfolio value (such as growth investors may enjoy), in order to not have to experience the psychological angst and worry regarding market price volatility during their long investment journey. I find it so interesting, to hear all these investor opinions. 🙂

I am new to this but think the math is a fair way off on the example at 7:13 - the final stock price yield given after year 30 is about 8.5% ($27 / $311) when it should be 5% which would be $15 per share, only way SCHD will yield 8.5% is the stock price dramatically decreases which in turn would have a detrimental affect to the overall portfolio value...so perhaps the dividend increase tab should be set to 0%?...
@DividendGrowthInvesting
@DividendGrowthInvesting 2 жыл бұрын
This is assuming the FWD yield stays at the average yield while you dollar-cost-average into the ETF/portfolio etc. No way to predict this, that is why I use the 4/yr average.
