Thank you for this wonderfully informative video. This morning I went to dig some of my Bergenia to pot up for planting in a new area that is still being prepared. Oh, my but there were 18 inch to 24 inch long rhizomes with few roots. I did a search and found this video. I live in Northern California in a Mediterranean climate so my Bergenia really needs to be in partial shade because of the hot summers. I am going to look at some more of your videos.

Ah yes, it can be hard to get enough roots for all those tubers. I'm glad you found my video. It should save you a lot of time and effort. Welcome to the channel, by the way. And check out the following video for an update on those Bergenia almost a year on... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJPbXomOeJqtp8ksi=xUX1wMBM3gngMiRI

I love Bergenia too. I have just split more in my garden, with and without roots. They are so reliable and bounce back easily. Thanks for sharing your beautiful collection 😃👍🏽🌿

Just discovered this recently. Will be trying it as a hopefully evergreen ground cover along a semi shade path. Supposedly it’s not a preferred meal of rabbits and and the spreadiness is a big plus. Thanks for this info. Great help

Your bergenia plants look glorious. I have had one for many years and can count on one hand how many times it has bloomed. Very disappointed. I think this year I will divide it and try to find it a different spot in my yard. I'm not giving up 😊

Hi Rachael, that's interesting; I have several types of Elephant Ears but none of them bloom. I am not familiar with the name Bergenia. I will definitely check if we have an equivalent here in the USA.

Common names are dangerous. Several plants go by the common name of elephant ears. Bergenia is the correct botanic name for this plant.

Great video, now I am more inclined to include bergenia in my garden! this video was very informative. I am wondering what kind of fern is shown at 3:55 ? the shape is lovely. 😊
@GardeningatDouentza7 ай бұрын
That fern is Asplenium onopteris. Once you plant it, you will have it for ever. Thanks for watching and happy bergenia hunting.

Very informative video, thank you. One minor point, I presume the pruned leaves can be put in the compost bin, ie they're not poisonous.
@GardeningatDouentza9 ай бұрын
Poisonous plants can also be added to the compost. I don't think Bergenia is poisonous and it breaks down well on the compost. Thanks for watching

Bergenias are a superhero plant. Sun shade drought wet everything goes, flowers pretty and good, wintergreen, ground covering, easy to care…

Hi 😊 I'm a new one from the Dolomites in Italy 🌿🌷🌿 thank you for you knowledge,I have a question...does the deer like bergenia ? 😟
@GardeningatDouentza7 ай бұрын
Welcome to the channel. I hope you are enjoying your spring garden. Bergenia is apparently rabbit and deer resistant. Personally I don't have deer in my garden but I do occasionally get rabbits and hares.

I've just dug up a very tuberous patch that was not doing well - hardly flowered this year. I don't have a greenhouse or room to store them in pots, so I'm going to try and pop them into my front yard which I'm transforming. It's been a deadzone for other plants (a bit shady) and I'm hoping these will take and thrive. I'll be sad if taking a shortcut and foregoing the potting process doesn't work.

The rootless Bergenia were all planted under a conifer tree. The latest update was in last month's garden tour video, August. Here is the link... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJPbXomOeJqtp8ksi=QyxUTMN8JkMCF-MH

@@GardeningatDouentza Wow, your garden is envious!! Your Bergenia look healthy. I did the deed yesterday. I actually moved them from a very shady spot, where they were towered over by an ancient flat-topped Juniper. Sadly, they had stopped blooming. I'm hoping that they will feel happy in this shady corner of my front yard and spread. Fingers crossed! I wish we had some of your rain ;) It's been too dry here in Germany these past few years.

Keep an eye on them for a couple of weeks, I guess, especially if there's no rain.

Is it mandatory to use compost soil for bergenia cuttings without roots? I only have soil less mix: with spahngum moss (peat moss), dolomite lime and perlite mix or cactus soil Miracle Grow brand bag (but this has fertilizer). If I don't have any fertilizer in my soil less mix, do you recommend me to add a slow relase fetilizer? or a liquid? Do the plants need to be planted deep to the bottom of the pot in order to grow roots? I ask you this because my cuttings I purchased from a senior lady, she sold them to me where the rhizome can only be planted laying horizontally on the soil (not vertically) and I can't pot it very deeply because of the shape the leaves have grown.. some of the cutting leaves have already gotten black spot (?) fungal infection (accordfing to a plants app) :( and I put them indoors right after potting them and watering them. Is this a sign of overwatering? ;:0 Do I need to have the cuttings away from my only East sunny window? Do they need to be in a plants nursery (I have a small one that can place in my living room). I have been afraid of watering it again or thoroughly, due to ta failured first attempt with some cuttings that I had left outside after potting them in very hot days... they wilted and I think rot... :( I have been concerned about overwatering them again, because I found in some of the leaves black spots developing and taking ove the leaves very quickly. I had already cut those black spots, but like you instructed in this video, I only left 3 leaves in each cutting :( I potted the second attempt of cuttings last Saturday and today is Tuesday and they look like the leaves are curling and hopefully not wilting (?) HELP! I paid for those cuttings and it is my second attempt. Also, if you could share your compost mix recipe, I will appreciate it for when I am able to buy the ingredients to make my own. Thank you so much!

@@MrsguerreradeCristo When trying a cutting for the first time, especially a precious one, this is not the time to experiment with mixes. Use potting mix. Don't keep your cuttings in the house. These are hardy garden plants and they will struggle indoors. Rhizomes can be laid horizontally but placing them a bit vertically, as I did in this video, will do no harm. They do not need to be buried deeply.

I’m moving and can’t plant anything on the ground in the garden when I am in the new place. I would like to enjoy bergenia indoors because we have long winters where I live. Can I use cactus potting soil mix with fertilizer in it? How often shall I water the cuttings? I just checked them today and they were getting black leaf spots on the edges, is this a fungal infection? But some roots have come out! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽😍I cleaned and peeled the rhizomes shells and sprayed them with hydrogen peroxide in case of rot, because I cut them back a bit more and half of the rhizome was firm and white, but half was brown and hollow ( is this rot)? I think the lady that sold me the cuttings might have a plant that is getting root rot or black spot fungal disease😵💫 Any good homemade fungicide recipe that you can recommend?
@GardeningatDouentza3 ай бұрын
Cactus potting mix is not suitable for this plant. It's not a cactus. The leaves do often get black spots so that, in itself, isn't an issue. It depends how much black there is. Good luck with your experiment.@@MrsguerreradeCristo
@MrsguerreradeCristo3 ай бұрын
@@GardeningatDouentzathank you for your prompt communication. The black spots started on the edge of some leaves, I cut that off with desinfected scissors and the spot came back and spread quickly and more on the already cut leaf. I decided to remove that specific leaf ( since the cutting had 4 leaves and you said to leave 3 for cuttings to root better. The other, I cut in half and it seemed to be healing ( one subtle black line on the cut), but today it’s darker. So, aren’t these black spots starting on the edge of the leaves a fungal infection? Even though they rapidly took over inspite of cutting the spots on the leaves?😮 You wouldn’t apply fungicide then? -Will any commercial indoor potting mix work ( well draining, of course)? or do you recommend one with compost in it? Also, if some cuttings are already rooting in my soil less mix, -will I need to add fertilizer in the next watering time? or when? what type of fertilizer: slow release granules or liquid? but since I shouldn't water them often, or there aren't not many roots yet in most of them, not sure if fertilizer will be ok. now? or later when they get established? I managed to re-pot some cuttings with the rhizome vertically as in your video teaching us! :) I hope the amount of water I put yesterday after transplanting them wasn’t too much. -Will half the rhizomes brown and hollow mean they have rot in them? I watched your video again, and the rhizome end you show it’s white all around and firm. -How often will you water a cutting to root? I am keeping them indoors in a mini green house so they stay isolated to observe them but also there’s humidity for roots growth. Once established, I will see if I can plant any on the ground of the new place I’ll go to. Is Fall the right time to move them outside? I am in Canada and the first frost is announce for September 22nd. These cuttings I purchased were outside in a flower bed, but because my first attempt failed leaving them outside in pots and full hot sun, hence my decision to bring them indoors to root ( as you had yours in a green house, correct?).😊 Thank you again and in advance for sharing all your wisdom with bergenia cuttings propagation process for us all to learn from you!, and I’m so glad I found your video! I’m sharing it with everyone I know that enjoy perennial plants!😆🙌🏽💞
