An opera that Franco felt a lot was Carmen, particulary in the third and fourth acts.He would enter the stage literally distraught,and the same would happen in Werther, in the duet of the third act with Carlotta and in the death scene. there,truly,something different would come out in comparison with the other times.in these two operas you could feel that it was a thing that he had in his soul,that he was digging out from inside,and really, it was a very impressive thing. I know that it is not easy to accept Corelli in the role of Werther. In Italy everybody is surprised when I talk about it because we used to listen to Werthers that aren't very manly,with small voices. But it was stupendous to see Franco's figure when he entered in the first act, and then in all the rest of the opera.it added up to a passionate Werther. I believe that Franco would have been happy,satisfied,to sing those three characters,Rodolfo,Romeo and Werther,that he felt so deeply. -Renata Tebaldi He was an unforgettable Werther.He used to sing Werther in the way that I believe is the right one, because those who would have Werther a tenore di grazia are sacrificing his virility.Instead Franco would give Werther a great charge of virility.I'll say it again, it was unforgettable.It is maybe the most beautiful thing I ever heard him sing.I went many times to listen to him just because I was fascinated by his interpretation. It was very believable from a dramatic point of view. -Carlo Franci. [Corelli A MAN A VOICE] by Marina Boagno

Lohengrin O Ludwig had real voice. I was always amazed with her Ortrud where she projected with the full squillo of a dramatic soprano. She was incredible and such a sincere, tasteful musician. I can count on one hand the amount of below par performances she did.
@jasonhurd43795 жыл бұрын
@@jmiller05 It was the same with Ludwig's Färberin. It always sounded as if the role had been written for her. Full hochdramatisch power, and some of the most beautiful top Cs ever heard from a human throat. Such a shame that she turned Karajan down on his offer of the Siegfried Brünnhilde, and also that she changed her mind about singing Elektra onstage.

Dear Christa, so sadly and recently departed. I can wholeheartedly recommend her biography 'In My Own Voice'; it portrays her as a deeply sensitive, accomplished and dedicated artist - certainly my favourite Mezzo. Interestingly, the book gives the slight impression she would really have liked to be a Soprano - and she did venture into that repertory. As for Franco (his 100th birthday would have been 8th April 2021) this is the most wonderful tenor voice, for which I lack the vocabulary to properly do it justice! These are great singers and this is a wonderful document to have on record. Thank you Lohengrin O.

Fantastic, passionate performance! Although performance hardly seems the right word for singers who get right into their roles. A shout out too for Massenet, who can easily suffer neglect in our widespread enthusiasm for the Italian Giants. I've seen nothing of his which isn't poignant and powerful - and opera at its finest.

Elsa.

Franco Corelli did 23 Werthers at the MET in 1971 and 1972, but only four were with Christa Ludwig, also John Reardon and Judith Blegen. The others are with either Rosalind Elias or Régine Crespin, both of which must have been hair-raising too! The MET also did a version with Thomas Hampson in the title role. Apparently Massenet rewrote the part for baritone but never published it. Susan Graham was the Charlotte.

I'd no idea these two had sung this work together. Is this from the Wiener Staatsoper? Corelli is so ardent that for once, Goethe's character is recognisable; so often, underpowered and sickly tenors portray a neurotic, 'stalker'-type fellow whom one would cross the street to avoid. Corelli restores the masculinity to this character, and makes Lotte's reluctance even more incomprehensible than usual.

@@LohengrinO Because I am a beginner of learning operas, I have learned so much by listening to the various renditions sung by great singers. And try to think about what is this really about and I found that we could always learn something in music. For instance, like of Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas' Lucia.
@susangould122 Жыл бұрын
@@lucete7240 You certainly deserved a more empathetic reply! Yes, yes, the music... but as you have been discovering, the great interpreters bring that music to life, and in different ways that are constantly fascinating. (like the Lucia of Sutherland and Callas). I remember so clearly, though it was over 50 years ago, how I became a passionate opera-lover and what all those discoveries were like, both live onstage and in recordings. As you must have learned by now, this scene is from Massenet's Werther, with one of the two most famous arias: the tenor's "Pourquoi me reveiller" -- the other is Charlotte's Letter Scene, which I would love to hear sung by Ludwig. I missed her 1971-72 performances as Charlotte, unfortunately, because I was studying in Europe, where I stayed until 1985 as a music journalist specializing in opera (see what can happen?!), but heard and saw her in many other roles. Ten years later, I experienced another great German mezzo in this role, Brigitte Fassbaender, with American tenor Neil Shicoff as a wonderful Werther.. Keep learning about opera! The music will of course enter your mind, heart and soul, but so will the memories of great performances of it, believe me.
