When there is true and selfless love, the person we love we can very easily set free to to lead their life the way they wish. As I can see the person here is still not himself fully awakened and has a long way to make ready to feel pure love in its true essence. It seems as if he is enjoying her suffering because he thinks her to be the cause of his own pain somehow which is not true actually as you said. It seems like he is himself stuck in the ideas and reasonings of the 3d world and not embracing spirituality from his inner self which is more common to find actually in people. Simply knowledge cannot make one spiritual truly unless and until we feel and believe things the way they are from that higher perspective...and from the moment we can believe them that way, there will be no question anymore...this is how I feel.
