Oh man, middle school Choir-produced theater flashbacks! (Annie Jr. technically) I was Miss Hannigan. Everybody had to buy their own costumes, we had no set, we had to recast the butler like three times, our Sandy was this poor girl in an unconvincing dog costume who had to sing "Ruff-ruff-ruff" over and over during "Tomorrow", but I think the crowning silliness of it was the fact that our Annie was this eighth-grader who was already, how do I put this delicately, *blossoming* and was clearly built to haul a hay bale under each arm, while our Warbucks was a shorter-than-everybody, skinny-as-all-get-out, flute-voiced sixth grader. If I recall correctly, during "I don't Need Anything But You", we had to switch around who was picking whom up.

God I love kids' productions of Annie. They're just GOLD.

@@StealingFocus Oh, and did I mention that, after all the frantic searching we did for hair dye to turn our brown-haired Annie's curls that classic orange, the best we were able to land on was a sort of dark fushia?

A great review, Emily, Gerald, and My-Isha. The beginning bit was hilarious and yes how do someone not have the score of Annie printed on their soul? You bring up solid points about what works and doesn't work (fake mother Miss Hannigan). I still love this version of the story mainly for the stellar cast. I prefer their reeditions of the songs compared to the 1982 version except Miss Hannagan(though Kathy Bates does a great job given what she had to work with). While Victor Garber can't sing well, his personality as War bucks, goes along way with him connecting to Annie. The reprise of NYC as a soft lullaby is really perfect. What did you think of him prosing to Grace at the end of the film? Wonderful job and cannot wait for the next one.

Victor Garber is a GREAT singer! He was the original Anthony in Sweeney Todd and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins! I lub him. :) I'm glad you liked the review!!! Thanks so much for your thoughts!

PUPPY!!!! I give this version lots of props for restoring the Christmas setting and two of the best songs ("NYC" and "Something was Missing"). And the actors with Broadway credentials. The 1982 version had its charms, but this is miles better.

I remember when this first aired, as soon as it ended they advertised that it would be available on home video the very next day (Tomorrow, as it were). I thought they missed out on a golden opportunity by not making that version longer.

Not just Daddy Warbucks the character, but Annie cartoonist and creator Harold Grey was a hard-line Republican that absolutely loathed FDR and actually had Warbucks die "of despair" in the comic strip upon Roosevelt's re-election. (Warbucks did return to the strip, obviously, but his return was heralded with yet another dig at FDR's New Deal) Suffice to say, he would never have approved the positive portrayal of FDR in the musical if he's lived that long. (I type this, assuming this information may come up later in the video and I'll just look like an idiot posting it before I finished watching.)

Another irony about this musical praising FDR and the New Deal...the strip's original creator, Harold Gray, was a reactionary and a "pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps" extremist and HATED both FDR and the New Deal.
