I question the authenticity of it taking a decade for Ryan Smith to build a new arena, as well. As you pointed out, he already has approval from both the state, and the city. Meanwhile, there's still no guarantee a new arena will be built in Phoenix at all.

There's more to the Roadrunners leaving Tucson than just how it effects the team. My daughter is 9. She's played Junior Roadrunners hockey for 2 years. If the Roadrunners leave, we won't have a sheet of ice here in Tucson for next year. All the kids who play here, and there are a lot of them, will be left without anyplace to play. There is supposed to be a new "ice den" type facility being built down here in the next couple of years, but it won't be next year. These kids are being left holding the bag if the Roadrunners leave.

15:40 The Minnesota Twins AAA affiliate is the St. Paul Saints, partly owned by Bill Murray. They play at CHS Field, a beautiful modern park in downtown St. Paul. Only an 10 minute drive when players get called up to the big club. PS losing the Roadrunners is a big blow for Tucson. Those fans, staff, and players give a shit about this news.

Smith has already indicated he wants to build a NEW arena. He just got a grant from local govn't for $900M to help in that effort. They have plans to build it in downtown SLC. I've never heard from anyone suggest that buildout is 10 yrs away. Most have prognosticated 3yrs.

51:00 if that was the case why not move into Footprint? Ask the Sun's owner of they could lease the building around their schedule and I'm sure NHL would have accomodated it. Just like they made a schedule with Utah Jazz in mind. This would have been the best case scenario. A respectable arena size for the next 5-6 years until a new arena is built.
@ChrisStinson9 ай бұрын
Coyotes asked the Suns to share their arena and the Suns said no. The Coyotes wouldn't have got any money from concessions or parking or advertising at Footprint anyway, similar to the reason why they moved from there to Glendale 20 yrs ago. Glendale was a bad location for week night games, majority of fan base in east valley didn't want to drive 90 min in traffic to go to a game. Then Glendale wanted Coyotes to sign a 20-year lease in 2021 and the team said no and went to Mullet. Yes the Utah move sucks, but if Meruelo didn't buy the team in 2019 the NHL would have relocated the team anyway.
@JustMikeTV9 ай бұрын
@@ChrisStinson but that's why I'm not entirely blaming it on Muerelo. Coyote fans can put the blame on Phoenix Suns owner if he wouldn't let them rent his arena for a few years while their arena is built. This isn't just one thing as you stated. This is a case of a combination of things in the last 20+ years. Previous owners. Not a winning team and fan interest. There are fans. But maybe not enough. But I'm just surprised the hosts were always delusional about all this. Even I, who have no insider knowledge said it would make sense to relocate the team and in 5 or so years get an Arizona expansion team. How can the hosts act like playing in a small college arena isn't a big deal for 4-5 years when a potential arena is in the works?
@ChrisStinson9 ай бұрын
@@JustMikeTV I don't think anyone should knock the Mullet unless you have gone to a game there and didn't enjoy it. I've been to several games there and the Coyotes fans and especially the out of town fans love the experience. Even the visiting teams rave about how good the ice is and the outdoor warmup area and huge modern locker rooms. Tickets are sold out and are the most expensive average price in the entire NHL. The Coyotes had it's 4th highest revenue from ticket sales in team history playing there. There is no minimum capacity rule in the NHL/NHLPA CBA and the arena meets all of the NHL requirements. But the team loses money from lack of advertising, concessions, parking, etc revenue and I agree small attendance is not a good look for the NHL. As a fan of hockey the arena is an amazing NHL experience and I'd keep going to games there for as long as it takes.
@JustMikeTV9 ай бұрын
@@ChrisStinson of course from a fans perspective it's great. A smaller intimate venue is going to be a better experience as a fan. Who would want to be in a big size arena in a nose bleed section and hard to see? But this is supposed to be the number 1 hockey league. Can't brag about selling out a 4600-5k arena. If they weren't selling out then that's a bigger problem. Teams relocating isn't something new. It happened a lot. Just not since 2011 in NHL.
@ChrisStinson9 ай бұрын
@@JustMikeTV I agree, kind of ironic/karma how Phoenix took Winnipeg's team and now SLC takes Phoenix's team. Who knows, maybe AZ will get an expansion team one day. If the NHL can't make it in the 5th largest city in the US then that says something about the NHL. Anyway, good chat, thanks.
@Utonian219 ай бұрын
Is the Delta Center old? Yes. Is it anywhere as bad as they made it out to be? No. The arena was actually renovated a few years ago as a response to its age, in which they installed newer, more comfortable seats, added in new clubs, and renovated the locker rooms and other facilities, along with adding more concessions. It's true that the arena was built with basketball in mind, so while hockey is possible, the sightlines aren't ideal. That's why Ryan Smith has committed to building a new arena specifically for Hockey. Comparing it to the Mullet Arena was just straight copium
@squeekywheel95919 ай бұрын
I feel for the fans. Every city will have this issue when arena plans are up in the air. Every city in every major sport has this happen-no arena is always a big deal. My gut is the best Yotes fans can hope for is a new franchise deal with new arena strings attached. They'll be back in the city in five years. The NHL wants the market, but they need to establish leverage for their negotiations on a new arena. I think this is what it's all about. They've lost leverage in Phoenix and can't get the deal they want. When they have a billionaire ready to write a check in the wings, it's hard to say no when you can't get a deal on an arena development.
@Blasthole9 ай бұрын
If Smith could get a deal to use the Maverik center while they build a new arena in slc then. The Maverik center was built for hockey for the Olympics and has 10,400 capacity. It's the best solution, not the issue is that Smith doesn't own it, West valley City does
@mt_machine9 ай бұрын
Guys, first I want to wish you and all the other people affected by this the very best for the future. However, I have to agree with @worldrummer. You, as fans of an NHL team, have been in an incredibly privileged position over the past DECADES, to have your team be granted so unbelievably much leeway. No other franchise has ever gotten a get-out-of-jail free pass this many times. As much as it sucks for you as fans and people, other locations and different ownership deserve the chance to develop an off-ice product that is not as much a dumpster fire as the Coyotes have been. It's time to relocate.
@ChrisStinson9 ай бұрын
In 1996 when Coyotes first moved to Phx, if one owner owned both the Suns and Coyotes and they played in a downtown arena built for both sports (i.e. Kroenke in Denver) the Coyotes would have been solid from day 1 and never had any "dumpster fires". It all depends on who the owner is, not the fan base.
