Great to see the protected areas are thriving again,diving there and all around Laguna etc I have watched the reefs decline a lot over the last 3 decades. I am especially happy to see the sheephead back in that area in big numbers as they eat the purple urchins which eat the kelp. Purple urchin barrens are not a great thing,we now need Crystal cove area to have areas of protection so the reef ecosystem can come back there! Good job!

Thank you and exactly ! Cabrillo Beach is the perfect example of where spearfishing and reef fishing have thrown the local ocean shore ecosystem out of whack allowing the purple sea urchins to take over and pretty much wipe out all the kelp, then the algae and then all the fish are gone leaving nothing but thousands of purple sea urchins.

Crazy how long you can hold your breath! How thick is your suit? How long of fins do you prefer? Definitely the most fish I have seen in California. This well be our next stop! Appreciate your hard and fun work!

The video is actually several segments combined. I can hold my breath around 2 minutes but that long and diving down and videoing is difficult so I break it up. The Freediving fins I use are 37" long from heal to tip of fin and are medium stiff carbon.

it’s easiest to snorkel / freedive here as it’s pretty shallow along the reefs and kelp. the outer reefs would be good to scuba dive but get rough with current and waves
