Baba todar mal ji was a sikh. The ' kursinama 'of his family is still preserved with the sikh sansthava. Baba jis' previous family members were sikhs of earlier gurus. Those who follow the teachings of gurus are sikhs only. So does baba todarmal ji and his previous family members did. They became welthier with the blessings of guru ramdas ji. There were two more todarmals - one at the time of akbar, who was finance minister of akbar and who was a hindu and the other was at the time of jahagir. In many sikh scriptures, todarmal has been referred to as a sikh - " Ik sikh todarmal bho dhani " . Many mistakenly consider baba todar mal the same one ( diwan todarmal) who was at the time of akbar , which is totally wrong. diwan todar mal at the time of akbar died in 1580's in lahore, long time ago. You can clearly search.

Can anyone help n answer this question . There was a courtier in Akbar's time who had the same name Todar Mall. N then we hear bout Todar Mall n his sacrifice. Were they related? As in it happens quite often that the first kid is named after father or grandfather .

The todarmal at the time of akbar was actually the hindu finance minister of akbar. He died long ago in 1580's in lahore. This were baba todarmal ji who was a follower of guru sahib. Their ancestors were disciples of earlier gurus. Their generations became wealthier with the blessings of guru ramdas ji. But many people mistakenly consider baba todarmal ji the same one at the time of akbar, which is wrong. Both were different. Even sikh puratan granths scriptures provide that baba todarmal ji was a sikh of guru sahib " ik sikh todarmal bho dhani " .
