More about Dixon of Dock Green
Part 2/6 History
Character and name origins
The character of Police Constable George Dixon was based on an old-style British "bobby"-a slang term for policeman. He first appeared in the iconic British film The Blue Lamp (1950) as a typical bobby on the beat, an experienced constable working out of the Paddington Green police station. The film was produced by Michael Balcon, who had been educated at George Dixon School in Birmingham, named after a local politician: this inspired the character name.
In The Blue Lamp Dixon has a wife named Em (Gladys Henson). It is mentioned that their only son, Bert, was killed in the Second World War-hence Dixon adopts a paternal aspect towards PC Andy Mitchell (Jimmy Hanley), a young policeman on his first day. Dixon comes across a raid and is shot. The rest of the film focuses on catching the perpetrator, a thug named Tom Riley (played by Dirk Bogarde). This gears up hugely once Dixon, who was said to be rallying in hospital, unexpectedly and suddenly dies, and Mitchell embarks on a perilous quest to find and bring Tom Riley to justice.
Series conception
In 1955, the BBC Television Service was preparing to face competition from the forthcoming launch of the ITV independent television network. The BBC therefore resurrected George Dixon for a new series featuring "everyday stories of a London policeman". The series came with an already familiar hero, played (as in the film) by a much-loved entertainer. The image of Jack Warner in police uniform with helmet made for an effective symbol of policing in Britain.
The series was the creation of writer Ted Willis, who not only wrote the series over its 20 years on television but also had a controlling hand in production. This helped ensure that radical changes were few. The designer was Laurence Broadhouse. Long-time producer was Douglas Moodie, whose other television credits include The Inch Man and The Airbase. Despite being a drama, the series was produced in its early years by the BBC's light entertainment department. It was originally produced at the BBC's Riverside and Lime Grove studios. Episodes in series 1 to 7 ran to 30 minutes. From series 3 to 7 each final series' episode was extended to 45 minutes. From series 8 (1961) onwards all episodes were 45 then 50 minutes in duration.

Back when productions with good writing was about telling a good story and having your mind fill in any blanks without the need for Computer Graphics or flashy Hit Music or Jump Scares,, It was about the human factor that anyone that has live a bit of real life can relate with. Thank you for posting. Only second time watching this.

Great series, culturally eye-opening. What a difference between the calm sensibilities or those days against the mindless techno fierceness and speed of the modern times. Naturally many young people lose patience watching any such shows because 'action' and 'gore' and instant gratification has replaced sensitivity to sensibilities of being 'human' in any walk of life.
@amethyst9998

You are absolutely right. If I were Queen of the World I'd have such gory videos, that young people take "pleasure", banned. Young minds are, or can be, susceptible into believing that what they're watching is normal, but instead they're being brainwashed. This can cause psychological problems later in life and, quite honestly, I've no clue why adults play these games. Sorry, I know I've slightly gone off your point, but I'm highlighting the difference between the lovely gentle way it used to be, compared to the insensitive violent society in which we now live.

That's the big difference between then and now; TV entertainment was thought provoking then, and is about titillating the senses now. It's the same reason that reading has declined so drastically. The question is, which of the two makes us better people? I think the answer to that is fairly obvious. Nobody wants to make the effort of stretching their minds and using their imagination nowadays, or is patient enough to get through 400 pages as a story develops; we want instant gratification to be thrown at us instead.

I have vague memories of watching this as a kid. It was a big highlight of the viewing week. I really remember it being part of British culture...just about everyone knew "Evenin' all" and would quote it; plus it promoted bobbies on the beat as being friendly paternal police. At least now we get to see those who are thugs in uniform. It doesn't seem o lead to rising standards though.

Nothing is perfect, but those were more comforting times when the crime rate was practically nil. Robbers, burglars, miscreants of all descriptions, but little or no drug trade, fewer drunk drivers, fewer street gangs, and hardly any weapon crimes but, more importantly, there was respect for Police. The role of the Police Officer nowadays is much harder than it was back then. Yes, all of the above were carried out, including murder, but they were very few and far between compared to today's crime rate. Wish I had a time machine to take me back to the 50s, even just for a couple of days. :0)

@peter David Those were the days, eh? I was a child back then, and I imagine times were hard for parents here in the UK post-war, but I don't ever remember being unhappy. Too much has changed in my lifetime, and not all of it for the better. I don't have a mobile phone, nor an iPad, nor a tablet - nothing - except for the desktop computer I'm using. I'm just a simple girl. :0)

@peter David Correct, and risking their lives when crossing the road without looking, as they're too engrossed to see what's going on, on their phones. Also, those who risk the same dangers because they're listening to their iPods (whatever they're called), and therefore don't hear cars bearing down on them. I don't know where we're going as humans but, luckily, I won't live long enough to have to endure it. :o)

My dad was a solicitor and a very close family friend passed away and she ws one if his clients. She had the same car with about 7000miles on it and had been kept in a garage and he wanted to buy it for my sister who was about to start driving lessons and needed a car but because he was the executor of the will and her solicitor he said it could be classed as, a conflict of interest so he couldn't buy it which is what he wanted to do and it ended up going to a dealer and my dad was so upset as it was in perfect nick.

@@jantyszka1036 or maybe the police back then had an easier time of hiding their misdeeds and failures. No PACE codes, no human rights act no independent office of police conduct, no legally compulsory investigation of any formal complaint against officers no matter how petty the complaint, no taped interviews, no compulsory cctv cameras in police cells, no body worn cameras, no automatic suspension until proven innocent of officers who discharged a firearm etc. No offence but by your logic police dramas of today are an accurate depiction of police today

In Britain, black-and-white police cars were called _panda cars,_ after the color pattern of giant pandas. The term was later also applied to blue and white police cars. In most countries, police stations have gun safes, but in Britian they have cabinets with long sticks for poking things, 25:29

Horace John Water born in 1895 he was 75 in the episode as George Dixon for 1970, so a pensioner, and too old to have been promoted to an inspector, far too old to be in the job and should have retired years earlier, as he was not fit enough at 75, only to be an actor here and out of step with the modern world of dangerous crime of the day.
