9 years later, I’m using this video to swap the thermostat on my 94 5.8 f150. Thanks 👍 Great Pro tip putting the thermostat in place on the housing before applying the gasket!

Sir, best video I've ever watched on youtube. If all repair videos could be this well filmed, and detailed, then youtube would be a better place. (Not to mention of everyone drove a Ford the world would be a little better place, and we'd all be real experienced at fixing stuff.)

Glad you liked it, hope it made your repair easier. I actually prefer chevy trucks myself, just did this repair for my former wife.

Advice to all, pick up a pump/thermostat bypass hose while your at it. Couple extra bucks will save you the misery. They tend to tear apart, doing this job. After done with replacement, don't forget to top off coolant and run it up to temp - Burp the cooling system. After cool down, top off coolant as needed. After a few driving cycles, check for leaks around housing.
@WillsGarage918 жыл бұрын
Just did mine on a 96 5.0. I used a paper Fel Pro gasket along with some Permatex The Right Stuff on both sides of the gasket. I also replaced the upper and bypass hoses when I was in there, along with surfacing the thermostat housing. I ended up retorquing the bolts after a few heating and cooling cycles and now have no coolant leaks at all.

96 Bronco, took several hours because I drained a couple quarts, spent lots of time cleaning surfaces, and used a very thin bead of blue sealant on the gasket and let it set for over an hour. There had been a tiny mystery leak for years but finally got bad about the time the thermostat went bad and wouldn't let the engine get warm. I recommend removing the intake pipes because it gave me a good view and access so now I'm confident that was the leak, near the bolt hole and bypass port. And, it is a change to clean up those parts of the engine. The engine was able to warm up properly within a couple minutes after the repair. No leaks after a week, and I added coolant about 5 times before the air was fully removed.

I just changed my thermostat, I had pretty much the same scenario. Thank you for showing me the gasket trick to hold thermostat in place. 👍

This is a good video. I watched it before starting on my thermostat and it was definitely helpful. The lower (right) bolt for the tstat housing did not want to turn at all, and the upper (left) bolt turned about a half a revolution and then got extremely tight and did not want to move. I sprayed both liberally with WD40 and waited. The lower one finally cracked loose by using the box end of a larger wrench on the open end of the 1/2" wrench to get just a little more leverage. The upper one required multiple shots of WD40...I would spray it, wait, then turn it tight as far as it would go, and then loosen as far as it would go and then put some more WD40 right on the threads, and drive it back in. I think that technique actually pushed the lubricant into the threads as I tightened it. Eventually it came all the way out. The hardest part was just to get those bolts out. Other than that, the only issue that I ran into was that it leaked after I got it all back together. I am going to take it back apart and figure out why that is. I took great care to clean both of the mating surfaces. There is a bit of a lip on the tstat housing that the tstat sits in, and I don't know how to ensure that it stays right there in that spot while putting it in. I might try putting a couple little dots of silicone on there just to hold it in place while I install it this time.

Very nice video! It helped me replace the thermostat on my '89 ford bronco.
@mikwms634 жыл бұрын
I would have removed the air filter ducts and disconnected the temperature gauge connector for easier access to the housing bolts. My approach to any work I do is it is only as good as what I don't replace. In this case I would have replaced the small 90 degree bypass hose as well as replacing the factory spring clamps with new screw type clamps. If the small hose starts to leak or the spring has lost its tension, you have to go back a 2nd time to fix it.

Will, grab the end of the hose with channel locks or vise grips and twist, like you are trying to unscrew it. It will break loose and be much easier to get off. Wait till daylight if you can. Doing engine work in the dark sucks.

I must start this comment with a huge THANK YOU because I get so much from your videos. Easy explanations and you show concern with quality and cleanliness of parts which is something I never really considered. I am a home builder by trade and honestly don't know much about cars. I am mechanically inclined though and by following your instructions I can perform professional grade work on my truck. So thank you sir for your time. I am getting ready to change the thermostat in my new/used truck but the radiator is clogged bad. I bought a flush kit. My question is should i flush it first or after i change the thermostat. Any help with this is very much appreciated
@RichBrownsChannel9 жыл бұрын
geoffrey beckelic If the radiator is clogged, it's best to replace it. Coolant has to flow freely, or it won't do its' job.

I suggest you put a large pan of some sort under your truck to catch the coolant as you remove the thermostat housing. Draining the radiator will not remove coolant that is in the block, so some will come out anyway. Thanks for watching.

I am doing this right now and it is a complete pain in the ass! The hoses won't come off and it's cold outside. The light on my hood won't suffice for darkness either. My lamp is broke so I can't use it. I hate the fact that engineers don't have to worry about this and they just have mechanics do it for them.

There are alternate versions that open at 160F and 180F. If you don’t have issues requiring a temp change, stick with the original 195F. That’s the temp where everything else is designed to work properly.
