Replacing the old Nimh battery pack with a DIY 2s 18650 2500mah Battery Pack for my HPI Baja 5b 2.0.
The 5 cell Nimh receiver pack was unable to charge fully and couldn't sustain power for more than a few minutes.
If using nickel strips then use a battery spot welder otherwise use silicone wires.
Its easy to burn the cell shielding while soldering so take precaution to avoid
damaging the cell.
Soldering the cell terminals can be tricky so use a good clean soldering iron and avoid heating the cells.
If you have more room in the battery bay of your rc model then use foam cushion and heat shrink to add some protection to the battery.
The 2s Li-ion Pack can be made using a battery protection circuit (BPC) or using a 2s JST Balance wire, I decided to use BPC to avoid using balance connector during charging.

So actually 2s LiIon is a drop in for NiMH 6v batteries. That TowerPro MG958 ISN’T RATED for 7.4v nominal, 8.2v full charge. This will likely burn up the electronics if you don’t have HV capable equipment.

I used 12 LiFePO4 Cells 14500 @600mAh to create a 2S6P pack that looks like the original NiMH and uses the space in the receiver box completely. LiFePO4 cells have 3,2V so my pack has 6,4V. It was the better option since not all servos can handle the 8,4V of 2 18650 in series.

this is bad advice. you can't send 8.4v to stock hpi servos. you need a bec.

But what about longevity.. this is a 2500mah dual pack, compared to (for example) a Turnigy hump pack that consists of 5 cells total and 4300mah lasts a lot longer. is it possible to add more 18650 cells but keep the same voltage? -increase the total mAh.

You can but you'll need to solder the balancing wires with the balance 2 port.

No need for balance plug. Just select lipo or liion in charge mode the battery monitor unit does the balancing of the cells. You can avoid using battery monitor and use a balance port otherwise to balance charge using a charger.

You really need to invest $3-$10 for some proper side cutters... That does not look like Rosin Flux...IMO
